Phoonk Movie Review

The great debate between science and superstition continues, but RGV's new film Phoonk tilts in favour of superstition. Surprising, isn't it?

The makers of the film had organized a contest. You'd be given a handsome reward if you've the courage to watch Phoonk all alone in a theatre, we're told. Honestly speaking, Phoonk isn't scary by any standards, but as a subject, it works big time because somewhere deep within us, we've heard of the power of the unknown.

Whether you're superstitious or not, you may've heard tales/experiences concerning jaadu tona. And you're all eyes and ears the moment someone comes up with an alibi.

Phoonk is easily amongst RGV's finest works (although BHOOTH was scarier) and it holds your attention all through.

As a viewer, you're keen to know how RGV would culminate this story. The culmination, of course, would meet with extreme reactions.

Some would rubbish it, but the believers might endorse the finale. In my individualistic opinion, it's outstanding!

All said, Phoonk is a fantastic experience. The subject -- black magic -- is its biggest star and that alone would ensure House Full boards outside plexes/cinemas.

Rajeev (Sudeep), a successful construction engineer, with a loving wife and two children, is an atheist to the core. He scowls at people who believe in the dark forces, till one day when an evil is let loose in his happy home, which threatens to destroy his family and shake up the very foundations of his convictions and beliefs.

Thanks to the hype and curiosity generated around the movie, you expect to be scared from Scene 1 itself. And RGV emphasises on lighting and artefacts, besides an eccentric woman (Ashwini Kalsekar), to create the right atmosphere.

Of course, you do get the jhatkas in a scene or two, but you don't clasp your hands tightly even once, nor does your heart goes dhak-dhak at a lightening speed.

Gradually, RGV plays with the camera (excellent camerawork by Savita Singh) and sound (Kunal Mehta, Parikshit Lalwani) to heighten the impact.

Like all RGV films, the camera angles bear the unmistakable RGV stamp, while the background score (Bapi-Tutul) takes an ordinary scene to the next level.

RGV is back with a bang. There's a certain consistency from start to end and this time, he gets the right subject to prove his detractors wrong. Every sequence bears the stamp of a genius that RGV is, hits and flops notwithstanding.

The performances are uniformly good. Sudeep impresses you with an excellent performance. Amruta Khanvilkar is efficient. Baby Ahsaas Channa makes a strong impression. Ashwini Kalsekar is top notch.

Zakir Hussain's tantric act is superb. Ganesh Yadav lends good support. K.K. Raina and Lilette Dubey, both doctors, are competent. Kenny Desai, Anu Ansari and the actress enacting the role of Sudeep's mother are perfect.

On the whole, Phoonk is a fascinating cinematic experience on a subject that's rarely tackled by the dream merchants in Bollywood: Black magic. The subject itself is the biggest star of the film, which would ensure a flying start at the box-office and in turn, prove a jackpot for its producers who've distributed the film themselves.

Deepika and Bipasha: Best Friends or Best Rivals?

These beauties rock the screen to the fullest.

They are smart, intelligent and good looking; they share a great on screen chemistry and unfortunately the worst off screen chemistry too. The fight is between Two Cats (Deepika and Bipasha) over a Roti (Ranbir Kapoor)

The flight got an emergency ultimatum when Bipasha and Ranbir constantly started complimenting each other over the camera (for the media, off course).

The flight had strong turbulence when both of them made it very obvious in front of the world.

And finally it crash landed when Bipasha made it a point to see that it was her and not Deepika who walks the ramp with Ranbir, which sent Deepika fuming (obviously being Ranbir’s girlfriend).Things turned wild and hot ever since.

Now, these babes were again spotted (together) promoting their movie, Bacha Aaye Haasino along with Ranbir (The Roti, remember).

They were seen exchanging smiles and hugs but deep inside their hearts they know what they were going through.

Now everyone bid, best ‘Friends’ or best ‘Rivals’.

Why Shilpa Shetty is so angry with Rakhi Sawant?

This week has been really tough on Shilpa.

First Jade Goodie's traumatic adieu. Then a member of her own film fraternity Rakhi Sawant was heard telling tv channels that a contestant on Big Boss must have been changed because of Shilpa.

When questioned about Rakhi's allegation Shilpa says she's appalled. "I don't even want to talk about her. But I was very hurt. I really like Rakhi. Why was she talking this way about me without knowing the facts?

How does she know the facts about how contestants were chosen? I don't think it's right for anyone to shoot off her mouth in this way.

You may have an outspoken image that you're always eager to uphold. But please don't flaunt that image at my cost."

Shilpa was also appalled by her effigies being burnt. Apparently a guy Ramdas Atahavle was approached to go into the house. He claims he was dropped because of Shilpa's manoeuvres.

The actress doesn't know whether to laugh or cry at this. "It's the channel's prerogative to select or reject a candidate. Until two days prior to the show I didn't even know who was going.

The format doesn't allow the host to know the contestants. Mr Athavle claims he was dropped on discriminatory grounds because he was a Dalit and Sanjay Nirupam was taken instead."

Shilpa is outraged. "Why was I being blamed if a candidate didn't make it into Big Boss? Why were they throwing stones at the channel Colors' office and burning my effigy?

They even held a dharna in Lonavla in front of the Big Boss house. Why me? Every time I'm associated with something people try to use my name for their own purposes. Please leave me alone."

Taking a deep breath Shilpa laughs. "I think I should take all this attention as a compliment. But somewhere it does take its toll on my mental equilibrium. We all need to be more responsible about our duties as a citizen.

My phone went ballistic on Tuesday. I'm in the midst of a dozen things and then to be badgered like this! I'm human and I don't like my name being constantly used. Don't hit where it hurts the most. I think they should start auctioning my effigies."

Laughs Shilpa, "But really, Rakhi Sawant takes the cake. What authority does she have to make such charges against me?

I'd have Rakhi know that it's the channel's prerogative to decide the participants. I'm hired by the channel to do a job. My jurisdiction is to go on stage and host the show."

Shilpa wants police action against the practice of burning effigies. "It's really very sad that known people are subjected to this. It's very degrading?"

‘Phoonk’: Fear becomes You!

If you want to watch Phoonk, a word of caution is that it is not for those having the power of understanding or those who want to be one.

Ramu said through the movie that it’s not only a horror genre story but also the title ‘Phoonk’ and it’s has chilling background score and intruding camera placements.

This time round Ramu has played with the camera angles than restrict actors into tight close-up shots.

Phoonk starts as a simple story of Rajiv (Sudeep) who is a construction engineer in Mumbai. Rajiv is a profit minded business man and a core atheist.

During his construction work a stone shaped Ganesha is found, but he refuses to oblige to build a temple over it at request of his own workers.

On the opposite way his wife, Arati (Amruta Khanvilkar) is a normal house wife, who believes in God and his unseen holy powers. There are a loving daughter Raksha (Ehsaas), younger son Rohan and their grandmother Amma in this family. Rajiv does not believe in the way his mother wants to educate his kids by telling stories of mythological characters and presence of evil to make one believe in God and his mythical powers.

There are also Vinay Dev (Ganesh Yadav), Rajiv’s lawyer-cum-legal advisor and a close friend, and a husband-wife duo of Anshuman (Kenny Desai) and Madhu (Ashwini Kalsekar) who are Rajiv’s close and trusted associates at his company.

After some time Rajiv bags a huge contract of constructing a mini-city project and gives a grand party at his house to celebrate this.

But after few days, his maid notices a few nail-pierced lemons and sprinkled vermillion with bones stewed in his compound. Everyone is scared of such unholy substances, but Rajiv believed to be items used for black magic outside his compound and reprimands everyone for believing in such illogical things.

But after the death of a guy who was to join Rajiv as Anshuman’s replacement at work in a construction site, and his daughter Raksha has periodic conflicts of change in behaviour, he forced to think. Rajiv makes him rush to doctors for his daughter’s condition, but Dr. Pandey (K.K Raina) brushes off the claims of any danger only as Raksha’s not being prepared for her exams and nothing else.

Amma believes her grand-daughter is suffering by an evil spirit and has no medical treatment will help.

The film thrills you in the form of how members of the family meet with unusual experiences and how insecure they feel about in their own house.

Meanwhile the sequences happen, and turns Rajiv into a believer of the supernatural while Arati turns to Science alone cured her daughter.

Over all the film ends with the audience thinking and wanting to know more of what will be the next.

Raksha’s performance is outstanding as an effective young actor in her part of being a kid possessed with evil forces. Kannada actor Sudeep makes a wonderful debut in ‘Phoonk’. Amruta and rest of the cast do their job well.

It is a one-time watchable for anyone who likes horror films.

Shahid Kapoor can’t dance, saala!

Shahid Kapoor who plays the lead in Ken Ghosh’s upcoming film Yahoo cannot dance. But the actor’s fans needn’t worry as it won’t be long before Shahid is back on the dance floor. However, this is a matter of worry for Ken Ghosh, who has no option but to postpone the release of his film by six months. Shahid is nursing a neck injury and is yet to heal completely.

Had Shahid not suffered the injury, Ken would have completed the film by next month and Yahoo would have hit the theatres in November or December 2008. Ken admits, “We are now looking to release Yahoo in May 2009. And it’s okay, because my film is perfect for a release during vacation time.”

Meanwhile, Shahid has given Ken’s dates to Vishal Bharadwaj and is currently busy shooting for Vishal’s Kaminay (co-starring Priyanka Chopra and Amol Gupte) in Pune. “Since Vishal’s film, Kaminay is also for UTV Motion Pictures, it’s no problem. Meanwhile, I have shot other portions with Shahid that don’t require him to shake a leg,” Ken adds.

Talking about Shahid’s injury, Ken says, “Shahid’s doctors have advised him to go slow on dancing for a few months. He is undergoing physiotherapy now. He should be fine in a month or two.”

Shahid Kapoor is known for his dancing skills, which he most recently displayed in his film Kismat Konnection. Although not much has been revealed about Yahoo, Ken wanted a new dance style, as song and dances are a major part in Yahoo. Ken has even hired American choreographer James Martin Kudelka, who has choreographed the likes of Britney Spears and Justin Kimberley, to teach Shahid new moves.

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan says he feels awkward while doing romantic scenes with his real life girlfriend Katrina Kaif .

“For the first time, in Yuvraaj we have been paired as a romantic lead. However, I feel awkward. Besides, the audience would feel that the real life girlfriend-boyfriend story is being played on the screen,” Salman told reporters on the sets of his new film Veer at Mehboob studios.

Dard-e-Bigg Boss for Sherlyn Chopra!

Actress and singer Sherlyn Chopra will no longer join the Housemates in ‘Bigg Boss’ as she has been shown the door. Sherlyn, who was in discussion to be cast on the show, could not close the deal as her two conditions could not be met on time.

Apparently, the newbie asked for a sum of Rs 3 crore for her 3-month appearance in the ‘Bigg Boss’ House. Since, after her first music album ‘Outrageous’, her second album ‘Dard-e-Sherlyn’ has also become a runaway success, she felt that only a decent price could keep her inside the House for a whole three months.

It is also learnt that Sherlyn suggested that the makers install cameras even in bathrooms of the House, so that she could flaunt her vast collection of colourful bikinis and inner wear while bathing. It seems she was keen to generate loads of teenage interest in the show from both sexes.

It can be recalled that the practice of cameras in the bathrooms of such a reality show existed in UK’s ‘Big Brother’ earlier, until Shilpa Shetty got the practice discontinued two years ago, with a clause in her contract stating it went against her ethics and culture. It is obvious, Sherlyn thinks otherwise.

But since ‘Bigg Boss’ found her demands outrageous, she was out. “Right from the beginning of her career, Sherlyn has a very bold, outspoken, daring and sensational diva-like image. One can’t really blame her for thinking of her colourful bikinis,” quipped her publicist.

“Nowadays, everyone from Kareena Kapoor to Priyanka Chopra is being talked about for wearing bikinis in their movies. So why should we have double standards for reality shows? After all, they are just another medium of expression,” added the spokesman.

Sherlyn is a typical bindaas new-age babe. Everyone knows that if she would have been on the show, the TRP’s would have sky-rocketed simply with her boldness and flamboyance. It’s hardly ‘her’ loss.

John and Abhishek play a gay couple in Dostana?

Finally, the first promo of Dostana produced under Karan Johar’s banner Dharma Productions and directed by Tarun Mansukhani was unveiled along with the prints of Bachna Ae Haseeno. Dostana starring Abhishek Bachchan, John Abraham, Priyanka Chopra and Bobby Deol in the lead is all set for a November 14th release. The film also has a song featuring Shilpa Shetty dancing along John and Abhishek on the Miami beaches.

What makes the promo interesting is the only dialogue said in it by John standing next to Abhishek - ‘Hum Gay Hain!…Yeh Mera Boyfriend Hai’ (pointing to Abhishek). Karan Johar had promised in his earlier interviews that his Dostana will feature a never before heard of a love triangle. Now we have understood what he really meant! The slick promo also features a lot of skin display what with Priyanka Chopra in a swimsuit walking on the Miami beaches and and John Abraham too ala Baywatch! Interestingly, there were a lot ooh aahs by the female audience in the cinema halls when John the camera was shown caressing a bare bodied John Abraham.

According to sources the plot of Dostana is - “John and Abhishek play best friends who are willing to do anything for one another. It's Sherlyn versus Rakhi Now

There was a recent buzz that Sherlyn Chopra will be part of Big Boss 2 but the babe has denied her participation, putting rest to all the speculations about her being part of the reality show.

However, Sherlyn was approached to do the show by the sponsors. Perhaps they wanted someone to match up with the high sexy rate factor and spice which Rakhi Sawant had provided in the first season of the show. There is no denial to the fact that Rakhi Sawant benefited to a great extent from the show.

When mentioned the show proved good for Rakhi Sawant and increased her popularity, Sherlyn laughed and said, is that what you call success!

On her comparison with item girl Rakhi Sawant, Sherlyn said, how can people even compare a Mercedes Benz with a Nano?

Sherlyn made extremely strong comments saying that Rakhi can’t speak English like her; and can speak Hindi only. She added that Rakhi can't wear clothes like her.

The extremely bold and super hot actress further said that she is much hotter and has a lot sex appeal as compared to Rakhi and she possess a style and personality of her own. Rakhi is a different sample altogether.

Sheryln has off recent taken Bollywood for a ride with her all time sexy avatar and has gained immense popularity among the mass.

No doubt she is a big threat to Rakhi Sawant. We hope Rakhi is not listening.

Let the battle of the sexiest and the boldest begin.

Now Deepika gets Ranbir's name tattooed

It seems like love in Bollywood can be expressed only by embedding tattoo on one’s body.

First it was the hunks of Bollywood doing it, now it’s the ladies turn. After Saif doing it for bebo and Usman for Amrita Arora, it was Deepika Padukone’s turn to do the needful (and painful too) in the name of her beau Ranbir Kapoor.

We recently noticed a tattoo embedded on Deepika Padukone’s nape. The tattoo says R K (but obviously Ranbir Kapoor). Since it is hidden behind her hair, not many have caught sight of it yet.

We just hope Ranbir Kapoor doesn’t have a “D.P” embedded somewhere or the other.

Anyways, great going guys, and pass the piece of (inspiration) to every one else in love too.

Talking about their next release, Ranbir-Deepika-Bipasha-Minissha starrer 'Bachna Ae Haseenon' is definitely looking one of the 'coolest' release of this month with tremendous buzz in and outside the industry.

Can Yashraj films who are currently reeling under a series of flops, heave a sigh of relief with this one ?.

Noted astro numerologist Bhavikk Sangghvi predicts –

" The title of the film adds up to Number 59 which is no doubt a symbol of tremendous power, control, status and success. But given a choice, an extra 'a' in it's title i.e. BACHNAA AE HASEENON would have made a 'world of difference'.

Bhavikk continues " As the title and the cast suggests, the film is primarily a romantic love story and by bringing the title to add up to Number 60, the name then would have vibrated on Number 6 of Venus – the planet of love, peace, joy, happiness, harmony etc.

But, the film's release date 15th ( 1 + 5 = 6 ) August 2008 and the compound number also adding up to Number 6 ( 1 + 5 + 8 + 2 + 0 + 0 + 8 = 24 = 2 + 4 = 6 ) should take care of it's 'safe sailing'. Finally, Yashraj can boast of a 'hit' film !

Mallika Ko Gussa Kyun Aata Hai

Mallika Sherawat once had a showdown with Rangita Nandy, the producer of her film, Ugly Aur Pagli on its sets when it was being shot.

Unit sources reveal that, once while they were shooting in a Mumbai film studio, Rangita went upto Mallika on her arrival and told her to hurry up a bit for the day as the studio would not be available for them beyond some two three hours more as there was some technical maintainence going to take place.

Co-operating with her producer, Mallika decided to hurry up things and so also were her co-stars and other technicians present on the sets.

But as Mallika realised it would be impossible to complete all her scenes for the day at that particular studio, she decided to take the matter in her hand and try help her harried producer out.

Mallika then directly went in to the studio authorities to request them to extend the deadline time as it was being problematic for the unit.

But she was in for a rude shock when they flatly refused and told her that they would have loved to be but they won't as she has been misrepresented by her producer.

They revealed to her that they had given the film production team a sort of an ultimatum to wrap up early in two three hours as the production team had not made payments for the last two days they had shot in their studio.

Enraged by the false talk done by Rangita, Mallika went directly to her and lambasted her in front of everyone for painting a wrong picture.

All was finally settled down only after Rangita said sorry to Mallika over this matter. As for the shooting, they all had no option but to wrap it all up as soon as possible!

Kareena is definitely the most wanted girl

Sensuous-sexy-sultry Kareena Kapoor and her stardom are beyond limits.

After the super success of Jab We Met and her super-glam look in Tashan, Kareena has become hot property for both Bollywood and Hollywood.

There was a buzz couple of days back about Kareena signing a Hollywood project but Kareena’s spokesperson denied stories about her doing a Hollywood film.

Apparently, during the shoot of Kambakht Ishq, Kareena was in talks with Hollywood production houses.

“It is true that Kareena was offered a role in Chamera which is to be directed by Daniel Silverman but she has not signed on the dotted lines, ” said her spokesperson.

So is Kareena doing any Hollywood film at all? “Kareena is busy for the next one and a half year with her commitments in Bollywood.

Until then she isn’t doing any international film. Besides Chamera, Kareena was also offered two other Hollywood films which I cannot divulge much into.”

Kareena is definitely the most wanted actress currently. Surely, her lucky streak is on. Way to go Kareena!

Hollywood knows only Aishwarya

Bollywood's dusky beauty Bipasha Basu has carved a niche for herself in Hindi cinema and says she has no intentions of going to Hollywood because filmmakers there are familiar with only one Indian actor - Aishwarya Rai.

"No filmmakers of Hollywood are willing to sign any Bollywood actor without a screen test apart from Aishwarya. They seem to know no Hindi film actors, not even Amitabh Bachchan, " Bipasha told.

"I got a chance to go there, but I found out that I will have start again from scratch like screen tests and other tantrums. They treat you like a newcomer. So I decided to stay in Mumbai and be the 'queen' here, " said the actress who was in town to promote "Bachna Ae Haseeno".

Talking about the film with newcomer Ranbir Kapoor, Bipasha said she signed on because she hadn't done a romantic movie for quite some time.

"I haven't done an out-an-out romantic film for a long time so when I heard the script of this film, I found it a little fresh.

"I play Radhika, who comes all the way from Ranchi to Mumbai to become an actor. But she ends up being a member of (choreographer) Shiamak Davar's dance troupe."

Bipasha doesn't seem to mind sharing screen space with two other actresses - Minissha Lamba and Deepika Padukone in the film.

"I am okay with even a 10-minute role provided I get an apt character and my share of attention on screen. Anyway, if you are a Bollywood heroine, you have very limited choice. I was intelligent enough to realise it long back and hence am picking up roles that look good on-screen, " she said.

Bipasha declares war with Katrina

Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu is miffed at being tagged as the seniormost actor in "Bachna Ae Haseeno", which is releasing Friday, and says she has started feeling someone as old as legendary Amitabh Bachchan.

She co-stars with Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone, who are just one film old. Minissha Lamba and Karan Kapoor are also in the movie.

"People have been calling me the seniormost actor in the film. I almost feel like Amitabh Bachchan now. The others in the film are extremely good actors and not at all inexperienced, " Bipasha told.

"They have a lot of experience and have absolute clarity in their mind on what they want to do. They are very spontaneous and we even get together very well in that way, " added Bipasha who was seen in this year's first big hit "Race".

She is also very upset with some media houses spreading stories on her and Deepika Padukone's "animosity". But she admits there is a problem with Katrina unlike Kareena, Deepika and Minissha.

She says, "We should realise that women are transparent creatures and we can't be friends with anybody. Kareena and I had a problem so many years back that today I don't even remember today what it was.

I don't know Kareena as a person but today I can say openly I don't have any problems with her. People then created an awkwardness and with constant repetition the problem got aggravated but I hold no grudges. She's a wonderful actress."

But there is a problem with Katrina Kaif with whom she acted in Race? The buzz was that they didn't talk to each other at all during the film's shooting. Bipasha admits, "Yes there is a problem between Katrina and me. We didn't speak during Race but that never stopped shooting.

If she met Kareena or Katrina at a social event would she be cordial and greet them warmly? "I could walk up to Kareena and do that; but no, I can't do that with Katrina. There is an awkwardness between Katrina and me. We don't talk to each other."

Bipasha was here with her co-stars and director Siddharth Anand to promote the film that traces the journey of a young boy from the age of 18 to 30.

In the film, Bipasha plays an aspiring actress who travels to Mumbai from Ranchi to fulfil her dreams but ends up working with Shiamak Davar's dance troupe.

"The character in the film is just like me. Radhika works and keeps her relationship going simultaneously. The role is very contemporary. She is an effortless dresser. She wears shorts and vests and uses all kinds of funky bags and accessories."

The dusky beauty says she enjoyed shooting for the film.

"I was completely pampered on the sets and have finally made two great friends in Ranbir and Siddharth. I have not spent enough time with the girls though."

"Bachna Ae Haseeno" has been extensively shot abroad at locations like Venice, Switzerland, Sydney and 15 towns of Italy.

Bipasha enjoyed her Italy stint the most.

She said: "I got a lot of compliments in Italy for the clothes I was wearing. Italian men only know how to romance. They are impeccably dressed with styled hair and they only want to marry you."

Her forthcoming movies include Bengali film "Shob Charitro Kalponik" Sanjay Gupta's "Pankh" and Jeh Surti's "Freeze". All are schedule to hit the screens this year.

Why are you avoiding Salman, Katrina?

Ask anyone about the hottest Bollywod property nowadays and they will answer you without taking time that it’s Katrina Kaif.

For last few months or so, she has been replacing actresses in films and now she has started replacing them even in the field of advertisements and brand representatives, too.

It’s very known but a great achievement for Katrina that she replaced Ash with the brand of Nakshatra, the diamond king, for the position of their Brand Ambassador.

Katrina seems very happy on the occasion as she says, “I am very happy that I am chosen as Nakshatra’s Brand Ambassador. I think it showcases my personality very well as I really like to adorn myself up.”

“Now I won’t have to look for jewelries before going to any function. Before that I used to ask for jewelries from my friends and now I don’t have to do any such thing, ” smiling asserts the beauty icon.

But how does she feel about replacing Aishwarya? Katrina says, “See, making me the Brand Ambassador is completely Nakshtra’s decision and I cannot help it in anyways.”

Katrina’s reply is enough to show that she has no wish to get entangled with any kind of controversy with Aishwarya. But she has replaced many actresses from their films, also.

“It’s nothing like that. Like others I am also different in my own ways. We all are bestowed with one or the other individuality. Actually, we all are almost the same, if not similar, ” explains Kat.

She further adds, “I am really happy with the films I am having these days. So, I don’t have to look at other’s projects.”

But is it true that like films, actresses have started fighting for advertisements, too! Katrina again plays it safe as she says, “Not at all. There is nothing like that.

The deserving candidate will always be called in for the right kind of project. As far as the fighting among us is concerned, it’s only you media persons who are only most interested in.”

Despite the film Singh Is Kinng not receiving better response from the audience, Katrina is still excited about the film. She believes that like her other flicks, this film will also get better response with time.

Talking about her co-star, Kat says, “Akshay is proved to be a great co-star with me. I am really affected with his understanding the audience and the entertainment.

There were several times during the shoot when I was left spellbound with his spontaneity and briskness.”

When Kat is there, sooner or later, questions about Salman are very obvious. Why are you avoiding to pose with Salman in films?

“I have never decided to stop working with Salman and nor have I counted the number of films I have worked in with any star. If the story fits well then I won’t mind acting with him also. But talking about the exact time is impossible, ” safe plays Katrina.

Listening to Katrina one must have understood how intelligently she faces the media. And it’s not only that as she has learnt well to face media’s questions regarding Salman even without the presence of Salman.

And when, at the end, Katrina is asked about her reactions towards her being alleged by Malaika, she stood up and joining her hands says, “Dhanyavaad”!

Salman Khan Cannot Tolerate The Katrina-Akshay Pair Anymore

Akshay Kumar is giving Salman sleepless nights after having delivered the third consecutive hit Singh is Kinng with Katrina. Salman is not known to be fond of Akshay the erstwhile Casanova of the industry and can’t bear Katrina being paired with Akshay repeatedly.

Singh Is Kinng has stormed the box office in its opening week. Adding to this Namastey London and Welcome last year the pair is being put in the same league as Dharmendra-Hema Malini, Amitabh-Rekha and Shahrukh-Kajol. Industry experts believe they are now the most happening pair in Bollywood since Shahrukh Khan and Kajol.

Producers Vipul Shah has even thought of casting the two in his upcoming 2009 release. The only problem Katrina faces is her beau Salman Khan is not happy with all this. His career graph is going south which is creating friction between the two. It is highly unlikely that Katrina will reject projects with Akshay but that might just prove to be costly for her personal life. It will be interesting to see whether Katrina chooses career over Salman.

Salman says Shah Rukh is no longer a friend

Bollywood bad boy Salman Khan has finally spoken about his fight with fellow actor Shah Rukh Khan and has made it clear that he is no longer friends with him.

“Whatever happened is between me and Shah Rukh. It’s personal. I’m not going to deny that there are issues between us. I’m a primitive man born in today’s time. I can’t fake anything. If there is a problem then I’m not going to deny it. We’ve had problems before but this time I don’t think we can sort them out. We are two different people. Our values and way of thinking are different. I don’t think we can be friends. I think it’s better to declare that then put on a fake façade of being friends and back-biting each other,” said a saddened Salman about his ‘former’ best friend Shah Rukh.

In the sensational no holds barred interview, given to an Indian newspaper, Salman expressed his disappointment at a friend (Shah Rukh) who doesn’t repay favours. “Shah Rukh used to come to my home to ask me to appear on Kaun Banega Crorepati and Om Shanti Om, I just mentioned it to him that it’ll be nice if he has the time to listen to the story,” said Salman in reference to his home production Main Aur Mrs Khanna; a film that Shah Rukh refused to guest star in.

Salman also brought attention towards Shah Rukh living at his home during the early 90s; a time when Salman was a superstar and Shah Rukh a mere struggling actor. “Yeah but I’ve only been to his house twice in my life. The first time I went on my own and the second time was when he came and took me to his house for a chat. It’s very simple. If you come to my house and you are being nice to me so why wouldn’t I be nice to you? I don’t fake anything. If I’m not in a good mood then that too shows on screen. But bad mood doesn’t mean that I’ve to behave badly. I try and be a good host.” he said.

During one part of the interview, Salman used actor Akshay Kumar as a prime example of a hardworking person who doesn’t use others to take himself up the Bollywood ladder. “He (Akshay) is very hard-working and keeps to himself and will work hard to bring himself up and not to bring someone else down,” said Salman about Akshay comparing him with Shah Rukh.

When asked as who he seeks advice from now that he has far less friends than before, Salman reveals his one true mate, “God. I talk to him all the time. I always get my answers from him. Sure, there have been instances when he doesn’t listen to me and doesn’t give me what I ask for but he does that only when I don’t deserve it. I’ve observed that whenever God hasn’t given me what I asked for, it’s for the best. No matter what happens I always thank God. Agar yeh nahi bologe toh aap nashukr ho (if you don’t say this then you’re thankless). God has given me so much and I just have to appreciate it.”

What do you make of this interview… is Salman right in saying that he can no longer be friends with Shah Rukh… and should Shah Rukh have accepted a guest role in one of Salman’s family productions… after all Salman has helped him out on many occasions… or is Salman just becoming bitter with age and is taking digs at everyone for no apparent reason… what about Salman using Akshay’s example of the honest hardworking actor to take a dig at Shah Rukh… is he true about that… does Shah Rukh use people and forget about them… we would love your views on this topic which has now come back in the news fold because of this sensational interview… please use the comments section below to send your thoughts to us and to fellow readers.

Birds of the same feather Flock together

The old saying, “Birds of the same feather; flock together” went a step ahead at the album release of Ghoonghat with actors Deepshikha and Mink successfully providing a base to the old saying.

If you have been to China and know how Chinese people dress up, then (by default) all praises goes to Deepshikha, who looked no less than a Chinese doll, wearing an extremely shining blue, highly decorative costume filled with Chinese words and symbols. Mother of two, Deepshikha was indeed looking fabulous and caught eyes wherever she was going.

Now, we hop to the girl of the event, ‘Mink’ on whom the album is made. If Deepshikha cane be referred to a Chinese doll, then certainly Mink can be given the crown of a gorgeous looking Italian babe. Refining the essence of color ‘red’, Mink certainly was the show stopper that night. Her red hot lips reminded us of the beautiful Angelina’s lips. Along with her juicy red lips and wearing a beautiful red singlet was a dominating red ‘Jesus cross’ locket on her neck.

If Deepshikha turned the party ‘blue’ then contrary to her Mink reminded us of the famous ‘Eveready battery’ commercial saying “Give me RED”

Bigg Boss 2 will be bigger and meaner: Shilpa Shetty

SHILPA SHETTY tells JYOTHI VENKATESH that she will be able to empathize with all the 14 housemates of Bigg Boss Season 2.

Why did you say yes to the offer to be the host for Bigg Boss Season 2?
I said yes to the offer because it will be something new as far as I am concerned since I have never hosted any TV show earlier in my career though I had taken part in the reality dance show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa on Sony TV as one of the judges. I have always liked to explore newer avenues in life and add to my dimensions as a human being

To what extent you will be able to gel with the show?
I think I will take to the show like a fish to water for the simple reason that I am very familiar with the format of the show since I have been a part of the show Big brother earlier. I am confident that unlike Arshad Warsi who was the host the last time around of the show, I would be able to empathize more with the house mates since I have gone through the entire procedure as a housemate in Big Brother and I would be the only ‘outside’ human connection with them

How do you feel as the host of the show?
I have been through what all the 14 hand picked contestants will go through and therefore I am able to understand their needs and feelings. I remember what it was to live with strangers in a house cut off from the outside world with nobody to trust and vouch for. However I am sure about one thing. It will surely change the lives of the participants and give them memories to last a life time to emerge as stronger individuals.

How tough do you think is your task going to be as a hostess?
I van vouchsafe that it is not going to be a very easy task since you have got to deal with raw human emotions when you deal with the housemates in the show. I hope I will be able to garner better TRP ratings for the show Big Boss Season 2 by being able to strike the chords of not only the audience but also the housemates who are going to take part in the show.

How have you decided to conduct your task?
As I said earlier, I have been though the entire experience abroad in Big Brother and hence it will be easier for me to relate to the housemates of Bigg Boss Season 2 this time around. I will make it entertaining besides adding a human touch to my task as the host.

Besides Sambhavana Seth, Shakti Kapoor, Sherlyn Chopra and Jhanvi Kapoor, who do you think are the other housemates in the show this time?
To tell you the truth, I have no idea about who the housemates in the show are going to be in this season of the show. I guess the channel Colors does not want to divulge the names to the audience because in that case, the suspense cannot be built up and it wants to spring a surprise on not only the audience but also the housemates every week when a new housemate enters the show

Why do you think people take the risk of going to Bigg Boss Season 2?
People go for two reasons. Reason No 1 is that they have nothing to hide from the world and the reason No 2 is that they want to be more famous than what they are and also make more money.

Do you remember your tryst at the Big Brother?
I still remember how eagerly all of us housemates used to wait to hear Debina’s voice every week when she used to come to connect with us from the outside world. I remember her voice used to be very warm and friendly. It is an important role to play in the show as the hostess.

In what way is Bigg Boss Season 2 going to be different from Big Brother UK?
This year unlike the first season, the show which will premiere on August 17 on Colors will be on air every day of the week from Monday to Sunday at 10 pm. It will be a bigger, better, meaner and gruesome real time drama.

Is it true that there is going to be a half an hour LIVE, unedited slot every day?
Yes. Starting from the second week, every day at 12.30 am, there is going to be a half an hour LIVE unedited slot at midnight, though in keeping with the Indian sensibility, the show will be censored by the channel so that nothing objectionable is shown to the audience.

Is it true that celebrities will be replaced by newsmakers in this season?
Yes. Bigg Boss Season 2, the Indian version of Big Brother UK comes with its unique twists this year that make it bigger and better with newsmakers replacing the celebrities in the show.

If there is an opportunity, would you be game to enter the Big Brother UK for a second time, as a housemate?
No. I would not go to Big Brother UK for the second time because one time is more than enough to last me a LIFE TIME. When I went there for the first time, I did not know that it would be so difficult, because unlike in Bigg Boss Season 1, there was culture clash right from Day One and I found it difficult to cope with that initially. It is only after the first three days that it starts sinking in you that you are in an entirely different world where you have to fend for yourself.

Were you confident that you would be a winner in Big brother when you entered it?
Though frankly I did not think that I would last for even two weeks there, I lasted in Big Brother UK, because I went there with the mind- sight not to fear.

What did your stint at Big Brother UK teach you?
It taught me the highs and lows of life around. It is only when you spend time in a place like Big Brother that you will really come to know how a person really is, without the mask which conceals his or her face.

Would you advise your younger sister Shamita to go as a housemate in Bigg Boss season 2?
Forget about going to Bigg Boss Season 2, my sister Shamita will not even listen to any advice of mine, because she is a highly individualistic girl with her own mind

What is your advice to the housemates?
All that I can advise every housemate is to be true to him or herself, because who the audience find as endearing will not be decided if you are fake. People will be interested in seeing the other aside of you as a celebrity or a newsmaker and hence please do not do things only for the sake of entertainment. The housemates who are otherwise so dependent on external factors will start learning new things every day during their tenure at Bigg Boss Season 2.

And Salman who is also now part of the TRP game did not hesitate to withstand his wildest enemy beside his beau and very calmly digested some tongue-in-cheeks jokes from Akki.

She was not able to understand the head and tail of their discussion. Intentionally or unintentionally, Akki went up to ask some personal questions to Salman. Bipasha hates Katrina

Sexy siren Bipasha Basu admits that she has problem with Katrina Kaif and she does not share a good rapport with her and they are in no talking terms. She further declares that earlier she had problem with Kareena too but now the problems have been sorted out and they do not have any ill feeling for one another but confirms her differences with Katrina.

Bipasha admits, "Yes there is a problem between Katrina and me. But there could be reasons for that. It could be because of our boyfriends (John Abraham and Salman Khan) but that never affected our work. We didn’t speak during Race but that never stopped us from shooting. I could walk up to Kareena and do that; but no, I can’t do that with Katrina. There is awkwardness between Katrina and me. We don’t talk to each other."

I can never be Rishi Kapoor, says Ranbir

Ranbir Kapoor, who is all set for his second release 'Bachna Ae Haseeno', says constant comparisons with his father Rishi Kapoor are inevitable, but feels that he won't be able to match up to his father's on-screen charisma.

'I know the audience seeks another Rishi Kapoor in me. But I can never be like him. He is such a spontaneous actor,' Ranbir told IANS.

Interestingly, a hit song from his father's film 'Hum Kisise Kum Naheen' inspires the title of his second film 'Bachna Ae Haseeno'.

If given a chance to act in the remake of his father's super hit 'Bobby', Ranbir said he would love to romance Dimple Kapadia on screen.

'No one can play the role of Bobby like Dimple Kapadia did. She is still so beautiful and I would love to woo her on screen again if a remake is made,' said the actor.

Ranbir was in town to promote 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' that is releasing Friday. He will be seen romancing Minissha Lamba, Deepika Padukone and Bipasha Basu in the movie.

Talking about his role, Ranbir said it is not that of a Casanova as the title hints. 'I play a next-door boy and the film is about his love life at different phases of life.'

The actor says he wouldn't like to be confined in lover-boy image.

'In both 'Saawariya' and 'Bachna Ae Haseeno' I play a lover boy, but won't keep myself confined to that particular image. Give me two years and you will find me beating up goons and kicking in the air,' said Ranbir who is expecting his film to do well at the box office.

'My first film 'Saawariya' was not a commercially hit one, though it was the best possible launch that one can ever have. But this time I expect my film to be a commercially hit one.'

As for romancing his real-life love interest Deepika in the film, he said: 'Both of us have just started our career. We would appreciate if people talk about the film and our characters instead of linking our personal life with the romance on-screen.'

He also pointed out that Hindi film industry has grown highly competitive in the last couple of years and as a result all actors have to constantly reinvent themselves.

'Right from Amitabh Bachchan to Darsheel Safary - Bollywood has never been so competitive. Every day a new actor takes the reign. As a result we actors have to constantly groom ourselves,' said Ranbir.

His other films are Prakash Jha's 'Rajniti' and Rajkumar Santoshi's 'Ajab Prem Ki Gazab Kahani'

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor

Director: Ron Cohen; Cast: Brendan Fraser, Jet Li, Maria Bello, Michelle Yeoh, Luke Ford
Rating: *

There have already been quite a few summer action blockbuster movies this year, and the 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' tries to sneak in and make an impact. It is not going to succeed.

With 'The Dark Knight' already getting incredible critical and box office success, any other movie following that one is doomed, at the best, to be mediocre.

The Mummy franchise returns for a third time and the tragedy of this instalment is just how much of a good thing it squanders. It had millions of dollars and some semblance of an interesting story. But it is unforgivable for the way it wastes some very fine Asian actors like Jet Li and Michelle Yeoh.

The film makers chose to ignore any kind of story and the potential good acting at hand, and chose to just go for as many explosions and as much noise as possible. The plot seems to be at the service of action and some exotic locales.

It takes us to the deserts of China, the Himalayas and even allows us to encounter some snow animals called yeti.

Even the dependable actor, Brendan Fraser, gets very little from the script to build on. Another fine actress, Maria Bello, is not allowed to sink her teeth into the role.

There is no chemistry between these two lead actors or between Fraser and Luke Ford, who plays his son. Ford could go down as the most bland character in an action movie this year.

The movie starts with a flashback from history of an ancient emperor along with his army being turned to clay by a spell cast by a woman.

The woman is in love with another man and the emperor is against this union. Fast forward a few thousand years and Luke Ford's character has discovered this tomb, and well, all hell breaks loose after this.

This is also the point where the movies starts losing its wheels and just rambles on, taking us for an inconsequential ride.

The only good thing about this movie is the action. It delivers in some way.

There is nothing new in terms of technique or filming, but it does strive hard to thrill. Pre-teens may find this appealing and adults looking for a good break from anything cerebral might also appreciate the explosions.

The director Rob Cohen might have understood this a little too well and thinks he doesn't have to offer anything more than that.

The writers, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, are not interested in coming up with anything fresh or even aware of the sheer acting potential in all their actors. Each of these actors has won rave reviews for at least one other performance in other movies. They could have been given much more to handle in this one.

This movie works best when there are no expectations and demands. For the sake of pure thrill and mindless fun with action in exotic locales, this movie will satisfy.

Singh Is Kinng

Just a word of caution before you watch this film: Singh Is Kinng is not for the intellectuals or those pretending to be one. It's not for the hard-nosed critics either.

Now read on…

Vipul Shah. Anees Bazmee. Akshay Kumar. Katrina Kaif. Four names for whom success has become a habit. That makes Singh Is Kinng the most awaited movie of the season. Must add, the wait was worth it!

You know the rules when you watch a hardcore entertainer: Just don't look for logic. If you do, too bad for you, for you would never enjoy a film of this genre and more specifically, Singh Is Kinng.

Anees Bazmee's films are very high on entertainment. The plotline may be paper-thin, perhaps ludicrous and farcical, but when did Bazmee ever promise a SCHINDLER'S LIST or a SAVING PRIVATE RYAN? Singh Is Kinng works because it delivers what it promises: Full on entertainment!

Bazmee has the knack of making immensely watchable fares that cater to the aam junta. Singh Is Kinng isn't a laughathon in entirety. Comedy, romance, action and drama, everything is well synchronised in those 2.10 hours here.

But, wait, Singh Is Kinng isn't a foolproof product. It has its share of flaws, the turn of events aren't captivating at times, but Singh Is Kinng moves so fast and packs in so much, there's no time to think or analyze.

The final word? Singh Is Kinng is a delicious and scrumptious pav-bhaji served in the finest cutlery. Your taste buds are sure to relish it... and ask for more!

Lakhan Singh aka Lucky (Sonu Sood) is the King of the Australian underworld, accompanied by his associates (played by Javed Jaffrey, Neha Dhupia, Manoj Pahwa, Yashpal Sharma, Kamal Chopra and Sudhanshu Pande). Far away, in a small village in Punjab, where Lucky was born, there exists someone more notorious than him - Happy Singh (Akshay Kumar).

The village is fed up of Happy's magnanimity, which has resulted in a number of hilariously disastrous situations. Out of desperation, they decide to send him on a long trip (that will keep him out of the village for a while!) to bring Lucky back to Punjab, as his despicable deeds were maligning their image in Australia.

The happy-go-lucky bumpkin, taking his mission a bit too seriously, embarks on his journey, accompanied by his friend, Rangeela (Om Puri), who hates Happy for dragging him into it.

The high point of his journey is his chance meeting with Sonia (Katrina Kaif), with whom he falls in love, but upon reaching his destination, things take a precarious turn as he runs into a series of comic misadventures, leaving him penniless. He is fortunate to find warmth and affection in an elderly lady (Kirron Kher).

>Following the altercation, Lucky lands up in hospital paralyzed and Happy, unexpectedly, finds the tables turned on him when he is expected to assume the role of the new King.

Few minutes into the film and you know that Singh Is Kinng is a lavish spectacle that's high on entertainment. Sonu Sood chasing a gora assassin at the very start or minutes later, Akshay chasing a hen - Singh Is Kinng starts with gusto.

And Bazmee doesn't let you wear your thinking caps all through the first hour. From India to Egypt to Australia, from the comforts of his home in Punjab, to the humble abode of a woman selling flowers in Sydney (Kirron Kher), Singh Is Kinng involves you in the journey.

And then Akshay becomes the King. Oh, how he becomes the King is equally hilarious. The sequence at the hospital (Sonu Sood is diagnosed with a weird disorder) is simply hilarious. There's a twist in the tale at the intermission point and the second hour, therefore, shifts gears - it changes from kabhi funny, kabhi drama to a prem kahani.

It's smooth sailing till there's another twist towards the pre-climax (wouldn't like to reveal it, since it would act as a spoiler). But, frankly, the film could've done without this track. The narrative, thankfully, is back on tracks soon after.

Anees Bazmee has a flair for writing great entertainers that work big time with the masala-loving junta. If you've loved NO ENTRY and WELCOME, you'd love Singh Is Kinng too.

This time, Bazmee shares the writing credits with Suresh Nair and the duo come up with some real wacky episodes. In terms of production design, this is Bazmee's most lavish fare so far. It's a grandiose product.

Pritam's music is already popular and it compliments the goings-on completely. 'Bhootni Ke', 'Jee Karda' and the title track stand out, while 'Teri Ore' is easy on the nerves. Ben Nott and Sanjay Gupta's cinematography is top notch.

Akshay Kumar takes rapid strides with Singh Is Kinng. Sure, you've seen him in comic fares time and again and perhaps, there might be a doubt, Will he carry it off yet again? Oh yes, he does!

There's no saturation point as far as this actor is concerned. He holds your attention in every sequence, irrespective of how strong the scene is, and that's the biggest compliment for any actor. Singh Is Kinng without Akki is like an ocean without marine life. Akshay rules!

The camera loves Katrina Kaif and it shows in Singh Is Kinng too. She looks bewitching and enacts her part with tremendous confidence. Kirron Kher is superb and so is Om Puri. Terrific performances!

They compliment Akki so well. Ranvir Shorey is first-rate. Sonu Sood is another actor who's finally getting his due in Hindi films. Javed Jaffrey's character works big time till he does a somersault in the pre-climax.

Neha Dhupia is engaging. The nok-jhonk between Sudhanshu Pandey and Yashpal Sharma is perfect. Manoj Pahwa is good.

On the whole, Singh Is Kinng lives up to the hype and hoopla. Want a joyride without taxing your brains? Board the Singh Is Kinng wagon.

At the box-office, the film will fetch a hurricane-like start. The paid previews, the opening weekend, the first week business, everything will be record-shattering.

Notwithstanding the new oppositions in the weeks to come, Singh Is Kinng will rule the hearts of the aam junta (whose verdict matters the most) as also the box-office, proving a record holder in the final tally. Blockbuster Hit!

Deols helped me when I was a nobody

In her two releases in August God Tussi Great Ho and Chamku within two weeks Priyanka continues her quest to look physically different for each part.

"Not that I planned for God, Tussi… and Chamku to come one after another. But fortunately I look very different in both. In God… I'm dressed in shorts and jeans. I wear a nose-ring throughout the film…a very hip and 'today' thing to do. In Chamku I'm a school teacher. So I dress in a saree."

She is all gooey-eyed about her Chamku co-star. "Bobby and I go back a long way. He and Sunnyji are a part of my initial phase in Mumbai. Sunnyji did my first film The Hero with me when I was a nobody. He didn't have to.

But he encouraged a newcomer. I'll never forget that. As for Bobby we've done two films together before. I'd do anything for the Deols' banner Vijeta Films anytime."

Is that why she agreed to be in Chamko although it's an out-and-out Bobby vehicle?

"It's Bobby's film. But I've a substantial role. I am the shoulder he cries on. Sometimes it's good to be a shoulder instead of shouldering a film, " she chuckles.

As for Salman, "We really had a good time shooting God Tussi Great Ho. That sense of enjoyment shows up on screen."

Revealed: Why Aamir dislikes Ramu

Ram Gopal Varma and Aamir Khan had worked together only in Rangeela (1995) which was a super duper success at the box office but despite that they never worked with each other.

There was a verbal war of words that had ensued between the two just a few months after its release following which they were considered arch enemies in the industry till date.

But almost 13 years later, Ram Gopal Varma has come out with the disclosure of what actually happened and how senior journalist cum film critic turned filmmaker, Khalid Mohammed is responsible for it all.

Ramu in his personal blog has stated, "The famous controversy between me and Aamir happened 6 to 7 months after Rangeela released.

Khalid Mohammed (he was then the editor of FILMFARE magazine) was doing an interview with me in which I was giving an explanation that the audience can rarely understand the difference between a character and an actor. I cited the scene in Rangeela when Aamir takes Urmila to restaurant.

Now the waiter being a Five Star Hotel steward is higher in social status than Munna but being a waiter he has no choice but to serve him. But on a human being level he can barely hide his disgust hearing Munna's lines.

So I told Khalid that the lines are being delivered by Aamir but the look on the waiter's face is what is making the audience laugh. So it calls for more complex acting on the waiter's part compared to Aamir in that particular scene.

Khalid who apparently had a personal axe to grind with Aamir went ahead and printed this article which read like as if I said "The waiter was better than Aamir".

By the time the article came out I was off on a Telugu film shoot in interior Andhra Pradesh.

Aamir tried to contact me and those days there were no cell phones. The fact that I was not getting in touch with him and him not knowing where I was, he thought I was avoiding him and as the media was hounding him to react he went ahead and reacted and the media blew up the thing into a full scale war.

The moment I realized what happened I met Aamir and explained it to him. He wanted me to give a statement in print against Khalid that I was misquoted to which I said I can't because all those things I did say, it's just that it's too technical for a layman at that time to understand and I should not have spoken to a man like Khalid about that and that was a mistake.

Some cold vibes still remained with good reason till years later we met at a party and had a long chat and since then we are cordial. So whatever happened between me and Aamir was completely 100% my fault and I am saying this now here because I was not trusting any journalist to put it across in the correct perspective."

But now if you fans of Ramu Aamir - Rangeela have started jumping with joy that the two shall get back together to create yet another memorable film you are in for a disappointment as Ramu further writes, "Before some minds out there jump to this conclusion that this is an effort on my part to patch up with him in order to do a film with him I want to categorically state here that I will never ever do a film with him and the reasons for that are:

(a). I am not as sincere or as committed as him.
(b). I don't have his patience.
(c). Above all I truly think he is a far better filmmaker than me."
