Kajrare with Himesh and Pakistani actress Monalaizza, flop or fly?

I dare say Himesh Reshammiya has the guts. After two big flops like Karzz and Radio he has signed another flick Kajrare which would be directed by Pooja Bhatt. The lead actress with him would be the Pakistani actress Monalaizza. What say?

The flick, a flop or a fly?

I was confident of my growth as actor: Himesh Reshammiya

I was confident of my growth as actor: Himesh Reshammiya

Himesh Reshammiya is all smiles. His film "Radio" has fetched him some good reviews as an actor, something he has been longing for. The singer-composer-actor says he was confident of his growth as a performer and winning people's hearts.

"I had always maintained that in each of my subsequent films, there would be a growth as an actor. I knew in my heart that I would be able to win over that miniscule percentage of critics and audiences who were in doubt whether Himesh was serious about his acting career. Now, when 'Radio' is fetching me acceptance as an actor, I can confidently say that it is a new beginning for me as a performer," Himesh told IANS in an interview.

"Radio" may not boast of multi crore collections from across the country but Himesh and the makers of the film are undeterred.

"For us, the most important point was to make the film for a niche audience and release it selectively. The profits were always there due to the entire money being recovered from non-theatrical rights. This is why the additional numbers coming in from box office are satisfactory," Himesh said.

Said a trade insider: "The entire cost of 'Radio' has been recovered from music, satellite rights and video rights. All theatrical collections would be a profit."

For "Radio", Himesh had even done away with his trademark cap and got rid of his nasal twang. The movie also stars Sonal Sehgal and Shehnaz Treasurywala.

For Himesh personally, it's his rise as an actor from his debut film "Aap Ka Suroor" in 2007 that he's feeling good about.

"With 'Radio' I was looking at getting into a space different from that of 'Aap Kaa Suroor' and 'Karzzzz'. It was an intentional and well-thought out step since I wanted to work in an experimental set-up and prove myself as an actor.

"My director Ishaan Trivedi, who really helped me by arranging acting workshops for me, did tell me during the making of 'Radio' that there was an added spark to my act. But honestly, even I was pleasantly surprised when there was so much of appreciation from a number of respected critics," he added.

Though the film by itself has seen mixed reviews coming it's way, Himesh's act finds special mention. While his casual look and persona have been highlighted, his emotional bent has been evidenced too. He is now all excited to move on to his next film "Kajraare".

"The promotion for 'Kajraare' is round the corner. From a core multiplex film like 'Radio', I am moving on to an out-and-out commercial outing like 'Kajraare'. It would be great to enter into a different space now," Himesh concluded.

Produced by Bhushan Kumar, written by Mahesh Bhatt and directed by Pooja Bhatt, 'Kajraare' would be seeing an early 2010 release.

Star Diets Revealed: Shilpa Shetty

Shilpa Shetty: "I don't avoid any food. My calorie intake is about 2000 per day. I don't need that much carbs because I don't do manuel work .Because I work out, I don't cut down on my carbs. So the scale tilts towards high protein.

I'm a non-vegetarian on every day of the week except Thursdays. My breakfast every day is a bowl of porridge and normal tea. My morning chai is a must. Then I work-out (3-4 times a week). After I return I've a protein shake, two dates and eight black raisins.

My lunch at 2.30 pm comprises one roti made of five different kinds of grains that I learnt about at the Oneness camp. Very high-fibre and protein-friendly. And I must have ghee on my roti, can't do without ghee on my roti, vegetables done in refined oil, chicken and daal.

Then if I've craving for something sweet I have a kulfi or a chocolate. I've green tea late afternoon and I've lots of hot water throughout the day. I've been addicted to hot water for five years. Evening, I've a flavoured soya milk.

Then a chai….no food until dinner, unless I feel hungry then maybe an omelette sandwich. Dinner it at 9.30—lettice salad with promegrenate or apple ..a clear soup. And I avoid roti in the night. I'm a late sleeper.

I'm a tv addict. I watch tv till I go into meditation before sleep. Do I feel like a pioneer in physical fitness? I've always been an athlete, my father was national-level sportsperson. My sister Shamita is more into physical fitness."

Dino Morea: "I go up to 10000 calories a day. I eat a lot. Five meals a day. I am just careful about where and what I eat. That's all. If I'm cutting down on my weight I avoid sugar and excessive carbs and increase the protein intake.

If I need to bulk up I increase the carb intake. Fruits and vegetables are a must anytime. I don't drink much. Don't smoke at all. Otherwise I just eat what makes me happy.

Himesh Reshammiya: "I'm following the 1400 calorie diet a day. I've stopped chawal, rotis, breads and sweets completely. I do eat nachni rotis which are very low on calorie When I'm not dieting I eat everything, no restrictions on quantity or intake.

Neil Nitin Mukesh: "My calorie count would be about 2500 a day. Then I burn out approximately 1, 000 to 11, 00 per day. These days I'm eating steamed fish for both lunch and dinner.

I take in approximately 140 grams of proteine. Besides that I avoid carbohydrates and fatty foods as much as possible because there's a tendency to put in weight in my family.

Manisha Koirala: "I follow a less-carb diet. I take a lot of salads, vegetables and soupls. Plenty of water and no fried food."

Tusshar Kapoor: "Protein shake with muesli in the morning after work-out . For lunch I take roti, tandoori chicken with vegetables. In the evening I have egg whites. For dinner I follow the same diet as lunch without the roti.

Sonu Sood:"I start my day with a glass of lukewarm water and some papaya. Then I head to the gym. After that I have an eggwhite omelette with fresh juice. I make sure to have light meals every three hours.

I have carbs only in the afternoon. In the evening I take fruits and sprouts. No carbs in the night. Only salads and soups and boiled eggs. But before 8 pm. Calorie count varies. But I keep a serious check on junk food and oily stuff.

Celina Jaitley: "I eat seven mini meals every day after every two-and-a-half hours.Breakfast is a must. I've lots of fruits and nuts. I also drink 7-8 cups of green tea a day. But no calorie- count because my intake depends on the amount of body-stress per day.

My first meal is at 8.30 am. It's two eggwhites boiled, whole wheat toast. Second meal is at 11 am. It's a bowl of whole-wheat museli with milk. The third meal at 1 pm is one chapaati, sabzi and daal.Around 3.30 pm I've coconut water with dry fruits and green tea.

At 5.30 pm I've tea, fruits and a smoothie. At around 8 I've my last meal for the day which is steamed fish, soup and salad. In between meals I've one green tea and one full glass of water. I don't drink or smoke.

Amrita Arora: "I try and eat at least 1800 calories a day. Skimmed milk, fruit, dal, roti, sabzi and fish for lunch. Poha for nashta. Yoghurt at 7 pm. And then dinner –paalak soup, steamed fish, salad.

Bipasha Basu: "I follow no diet regime at all. I just work out like crazy in the gym and keep on my toes the whole day."

Aryan Vaid: "I eat healthy. And I don't count calories For breakfast I have protein shake and yoghurt. For lunch I have ten boiled eggwhites, two pieces of bread and some chicken. Plus a small dessert or mithai.

In the evening I've six eggwhites and a protein shake. Dinner is ten boiled eggwhites chicken and salad. No bread for dinner. Before sleeping I've a protein shake again with yoghurt . This should add up to about 2000 calories. But I don't monitor my calories. I just eat healthy.

Sophie Chowdhary: "Never counted the calories. I'm a foodie. I just try to eat healthy.. I start the day with ginseng tea, a few soaked almonds, small bowl of papaya and an eggwhite omelette.

Post-gym I either have a half a protein shake or an apple depending on the time. For lunch I have chicken, daal, sabzi and maximum one roti. At 5 pm I've chai and a handful of nuts or frozen yoghurt or an organic food bar.

For dinner it's souped and steamed fish or grilled chicken. Lots of green tea throughout the day. And yes I do cheat on my diet twice a week. But don't tell my trainer. Ha ha.

Riya Sen: "I can't diet! As soon as I think of dieting I start thinking of chocolates. But I'm into controlled eating.

Every time I'm hungry during the day I eat . But I control the quantity. I'm not over-ambitious about my workouts.

I've never had a really major weight problem. I hate the over-worked-out look in women. I believe Indian woman look best when they're slightly voluptuous.I love to swim, do light-weights, attend dance classes and I do spinning.

Tanushree Dutta: "I don't count my calories. But I eat healthy. And my diet keeps changing according to my level of fitness.

Nowadays I start my day with cereals with milk and eggs. Then I've 5 small meals throughout the day comprising chicken fish and vegetables.

Right now I'm completely off sweets and junk food."

Plastic surgery could be my next option: Himesh Reshammiya

After close to a yearlong of generation of hype and hoopla for Karzzzz, the film is finally releasing.
Yes, last one year has been quite eventful. Now is the time for audience to pass its verdict. It's a slick 2 hrs 18 mins film. I am really expecting it to take a good opening.

Exhibitors and distributors have been mighty excited about the prospects of the film. We are bringing the film out on close to 1200 prints globally, which is historic and next only to Singh Is Kinng.

1200 prints! Now that's quite a number, something which one relates only to a Khan film. Are we expecting the film to sustain similar print count in second week as well?
To answer you first question, 1200 prints is reasonable since we are making our presence felt in single screens as well as multiplexes in a big way. Yes, you can say that Karzzzz release is as huge as a Khan film. About the second weekend, how can I say anything at this point of time?

It would depend completely on how the audience reacts to the film in the first week. In the past, it has happened that shows had to be increased in the second week run of a film. You never know, this may happen in the case of Karzzzz too!

The way Karzzzz has been hyped 24X7, doesn't it scare you a little? Don't you feel you should let the film do the talking now rather than so much of hype resulting in people becoming extra demanding?
See, no hype is big enough. In today's market scenario, you have to pitch your film in such a way that the least it does is receive a very good opening at the box office. Because if that doesn't happen, piracy would only end up killing it.

Moreover, hype created for Karzzzz is justified. It is coming after the success of Aap Kaa Surroor; the songs have been chartbusters while the talkie promos have been received very well too. When the going is good, why not keep the momentum on?

You must be thankful to your producers for this.
Absolutely. I am happy that Bhushan (Kumar) is getting all his marketing skills in place to pitch the movie as well as the music, in just the right manner.

As a producer, he understands the medium and it is due to his marketing acumen that as many as 8 songs from the film have been placed across all music channels in 1 and a half months flat. It is unprecedented!

Would earning mega bucks over the opening weekend be satisfactory enough for you?
Good opening over weekend is the demand of the market but for me to be successful as an actor, the film has to do very well in three stages - opening, acceptance and sustaining power. This would be the true measure of the film's success.

Somewhere it was mentioned that your son is your biggest critic and likes predicting about Bollywood movies and music. What does he have to say about Karzzzz?
As you know, he was bang on about the music of Karzzzz. After the very first listening, he declared that it would be superhit and that's how it is today. He saw the first copy of the film, which just came out and immensely liked it. He has assured me that it would be loved by the audience and for me his assurance is like gospel's truth.

Has he been right in prediction of films, which haven't starred you?
Absolutely, he saw Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Naa, Race and some time back Rang De Basanti and said then and there that these movies would be huge successes.

Basically, he is just like any other normal kid of today who is cued into Bollywood in a big way. He is a movie buff and his judgment is mostly right. Now people can sometime go wrong as well though I sincerely hope that it doesn't happen for Karzzzz (smiles)!

Himesh, coming to you acting in Karzzzz, did you really feel that you could carry it off?
Basically, I believe that every true movie fan has an actor hidden in him somewhere! Agar aap 10-20 saal se filmein dekh rahe ho to kuch acting toh aap seekh hi jaate ho!

Yes, it's a different thing that you may or may not realize the potential of an actor in you. I sensed this a few years back and that is when I decided to take the plunge. Karz is my favorite film and I had to give it a tribute in some way. I am not trying to prove a point because I am not even 1% as good looking or a good dancer as Rishi Kapoor!

And you were still confident?
For me, Karzzzz is all about the belief that a common man can be a hero as well. He may not be the most good looking or dashing but he has in him the willingness and passion to do well.

On the sets, I was a newcomer with great actors like Urmila Matondkar, Danny Denzongpa and Gulshan Grover around. I had to really work hard to make sure that I am able to stand up in front of all these seasoned actors.

So my 'mantra' was to act 'dil se' and leave the rest to Satish Kaushik. He is the one who worked on each and every nuance of mine and corrected me at every step. Moreover, with a face like mine, I had to be extra careful that I don't do anything silly!

You seem to be openly criticizing your looks?
'Ab kya karen, jo hai usse badal to nahi sakte! ' My sister Roopa has been working on my styling for over the years. Maybe plastic surgery could be the next option!

Short, fat, balding men: Bollywood's unlikely heroes

They may lack the brooding good looks, chiseled jaw and honed physique of the typical leading Bollywood male, but short, fat, balding men are proving that they can still be a screen success. In an image-conscious industry, actors such as Himesh Reshammiya, Vinay Pathak and Paresh Rawal have found that how they look has not been a hindrance. All three readily admit they are no matinee idols, and may even be past their prime, yet are still a box office draw -- suggesting that personality, a sense of humour and raw talent are just as attractive as a pretty face.At five feet five inches (1.64 metres) tall, Reshammiya knows he is an unlikely screen presence. The 35-year-old only became an actor in 2007 after a career as a successful Bollywood music director. It is only people's love that has made me a hero. I am nowhere near other good-looking heroes of the industry," he said.

For his debut film, "Aap Kaa Surroor" (The Real Love Story), Reshammiya wore a baseball cap to cover his bald patch but audiences didn't seem to mind. The film more than held its own with two other movies released on the same day with more stellar casts.Middle-aged Pathak shot to fame as the irritating but endearing idiot Bharat Bhushan in the 2007 film Bheja Fry", a remake of the French comedy "Le Diner de Cons" (The Dinner Game).

He then followed up in the well-received comedy-drama "Mithya" in 2008, about a struggling actor who has the misfortune of being the double of an underworld don.All three men are modest about their success, arguing that character and acting ability has a more enduring appeal than the hero's looks -- which on its own is no guarantee of success. If a film is made with heart, honesty, happiness, passion and sincerity it will click. I am not in competition with any hero. My attempt is to make good cinema as much as I can. This is my main objective," said Pathak.

Rawal, who is nudging 60 and has played bad guys and comic roles, has had a succession of box office hits, including "Maalamaal Weekly" in 2006. He will play three different parts in his upcoming film "Oye Lucky, Oye Lucky".I don't consider myself as a star but only an actor. I came to this industry in the 1980s to become an actor and not a hero. I knew I would survive because I can act well," he said. The demands of acting have, however, led to some compromises for the unlikely leading men.

In his latest film "Karzzzz", which hits screens on October 17, Reshammiya has had a hair weave. He is also on a protein diet and cutting out the pizzas and ice-cream to get in shape for the five films he has lined up for next year.I cannot have flab on my stomach now if I want to be a hero," he admitted.Pathak also shed a few pounds for his new film "Dasvidaniya" (Goodbye). But both insist they are not succumbing to vanity.Reshammiya still touts himself as an average Joe of humble stock, albeit one who now has a personal make-up artist in tow.I have ordinary looks and I guess therefore the common man can relate to me when he sees me on the big screen," he said.

Pathak added: "I only put on or lose weight according to the characters that I play in my film. I never wanted to be a hero and only wanted to be a good actor," he explained. All my films are character driven and not hero driven."Rawal agreed, saying his goal is commercial success and critical acclaim.I don't want to get trapped into the stardom business," he said. "Stardom is for a limited time span compared to that of an actor whose acting lifeline is very long."

Will Himesh do it Again?

This Himesh Reshammiya in a Burqa photo was taken at the Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti Dargah in Ajmer. Well, this is not a new photo as this was taken right before the release of Himesh’s debut movie Aap Ka Surror.
Now what I’m really interested in is whether Himesh repeats the Michael Jackson/Govinda Burqa act before the release of his second movie Karzzzz or not. If you know Himesh well, you shouldn’t be shocked to see him do the act again.
Waiting for the new pictures![:D]

Himesh and Urmila strike a rapport

Himesh Reshammiya and Urmila Matondkar are currently shooting for the remake of the 1980s hit flick, Karz. And the two actors are bonding very well. “Himesh is very down-to-earth and hard-working,” says Urmila. “He’s very passionate about his work. It’s been great working with him.”

As for Himesh, he is at home with people in the film industry, despite being new to acting. “There’s a high level of comfort here,” he says. “I’ve worked with most of them as a music director or singer at some point or another. So, I’m not really new to the industry.”

He certainly isn’t, but he is new to is the lush crop of hair he’s been sporting recently. On the sets, Himesh reaches for his hairbrush every chance he gets, to make sure his new locks look good. “I was going bald, so I got this done. I’m just a Gujarati boy. But you have to try to do your best in everything, and God helps you out.”
