At 35, Aishwarya is most bankable Bollywood girl

At 35, Bollywood's blue-eyed-girl Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who celebrates her birthday on Saturday, continues to woo Indian filmmakers with her international appeal, making her one of the most bankable stars in the Indian film industry. Says a popular film critic: “Aishwarya's career graph has been very good though not excellent but she is the only actress who can attract national and international crowds. She is the face of so many international brands and a very good actress also.” London-based Indian filmmaker Jagmohan Mundhra, who directed the actress in the critically acclaimed English movie “Provoked”, also credits her as a superstar with an international appeal. “She is a superstar. Not only is she a recognised name worldwide; she is a totally bankable star. My personal experience with her from 'Provoked' says that the film wouldn't have worked without her. “The best thing about her is that despite her stature, she is completely a director's actor. She would also give her inputs in the character and would never come back to see a shot once the director approves it. She is thoroughly professional, ” Mundhra added. Aishwarya, now married to Bollywood actor Abhishek Bachchan, was born in Mangalore to Krishnaraj Rai, a marine biologist, and Vrinda Rai, a writer. After winning the Miss World crown in 1994, Aishwarya took to acting in 1997 with a Tamil film “Iruvar” opposite southern superstar Mohanlal and made her Bollywood debut in the same year opposite Bobby Deol in "Aur Pyaar Ho Gaya". Both films bombed. In the following year, she won her first Filmfare Best Actress award South for the Tamil film “Jeans” but became an overnight star with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's “Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam” in 1999. She bagged the Filmfare Best Actress award for this too. In 2000, she gave a power packed performance in Subhash Ghai's "Taal" but followed it up with a string of flops like "Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai" (2000), "Dhai Akshar Prem Ke" (2000), "Albela" (2001), "Hum Kisise Kum Nahi" (2001) and many more. In between, she was recognised for her supporting role in Yash Chopra's 2000 hit “Mohabbatein”. Bollywood actress Minissha Lamba, whose much-hyped last venture "Kidnap" bombed at the box office, says she is disappointed that the film didn't turn out well at the box office. "I am disappointed that 'Kidnap' didn't turn out well. It really feels sad when you work so hard for a film and which is so close to you and it doesn't do well, " Minissha said. The actress shaved off seven kg for her role as a 17-year-old teenager in the film following a rigorous regime over a period of eight months. However, Minissha says she would never go to the extremes of putting on mass for a character in any film. "I am never ever going to put on weight for a character in a film. I am one of those body types who find it very difficult losing weight and so I am never going to do that. Putting on weight is a nightmare for me, " she said.

Akshay shoots 16 hours a day to give Tasveer team a Diwali break

Akshay Kumar has had a mixed year so far. While Tashan failed to live up to all its hype, Akshay delivered a blockbuster with Vipul Shah's Singh Is Kinng.

Now, the 'Khiladi' Kumar is busy shooting for Percept Picture Company's Tasveer in Cape Town. The film, directed by Nagesh Kukunoor is India's first psychological thriller.



The story goes that Akshay shot for almost 16 hours a day as he wanted the entire unit to take a two-day break for Diwali. In fact, Akki who has been traveling and shooting in various parts of the world throughout the year has hardly got any time to spend with his family. Hence for Diwali, he wanted to be at home at least for two days. He could have easily taken a break for himself and chilled out but he didn't want even the other unit members to be working during Diwali. Hence he went that extra mile to wrap up as much work as possible so that everyone could enjoy a two day break.

Needless to say, producer Shailendra Singh is all praises for the superstar. "Akshay is very close to everyone on the sets and he doesn't want anyone to work on Diwali. He has planned a lavish party for the entire unit on Diwali day here in Cape Town, though he is going to India for two days to celebrate Diwali."

HEROES: When laughter landed Mithun in hospital!

We all know that Mithun Chakraborty played the role of a laughing don in DON MUTHUSWAMY but it will be amusing to know that he had a bad laughing experience during the shooting of Samir Karnik's HEROES!

As per Mithun Chakraborty himself, during the Uttarakhand shooting schedule of HEROES, Sohail Khan and Vatsal Seth went berserk while relating some hilarious jokes to him. Infact, Mithun's laughter became uncontrolled, so much so that his heart beat got affected and he had to be taken to a hospital! After that Mithun told Sohail and Vatsal (jokingly) that from next time onwards they must make him cry rather than laugh!

Well, we are quite sure that after seeing the good to decent opening of HEROES (that released last Friday), that too during the normally dull pre–'Diwali' phase, Mithun da must be smiling, if not laughing!

I was the original replacement for Aishwarya Rai: Deepika Padukone

Deepika Padukone wants nothing more than to do a sports -based film. And if it is about badminton then nothing like it. "Look at what Chak De India did to hockey. I'd love to do a really good film on the game of badminton which is the family game." In fact efforts are on to put a project like this together. Deepika recently played bandminton with her dad Prakash Padukone recently. "We were playing together after a really long time. I like to contribute as much as possible to sports. Yes, I'd support badminton more than any other sport. But I'd like to support Indian sports in every way possible.This was the first time that we played in front of the media." While doing the intricate stunts and martial arts in Chandni Chowk To China Deepika Padukone got herself a chronically sprained ankle. "The stunts in Chandni Chowk To China were tough. Fortunately I got no broken bones. But I got a twisted ankle which will remain with me. My left ankle will remain sprained for all my life. I sprained it once while rehearsing and then I sprained the same ankle at exactly the same place twice again. Luckily it's not a fracture. But I can't sit cross-legged or sit on my hunches…I can't do anything that requires me to put my weight on my left leg." Being from an athletic family Deepika always wanted to do an action film. "Yes, I always wanted to do an action character. I'm glad I got an opportunity. Akshay Kumar was a fantastic co-star. The way he comes on the sets and goes through the scenes of the day and the way he improvises, is tremendous." Deepika Padukone is doing the maximum endorsements. Last heard turned down the Nakshatra diamond deal after Aishwarya Rai's contract ended. They finally had to go to Katrina Kaif. What is the truth behind this? Says Deepika, "I don't know who else they went to. But they did come to me. And things didn't work out. I'm as selective about my endorsements as I am about my movies. I'd definitely endorse brands that I believe in. I'd like to represent brands that suit my age. I'm endorsing the Signature brand for Levis, Kingfisher airlines, Tissot. I'm good at time management. That comes from being a sport person. I started travellimg at a very young age. That taught me to be punctual. Sometimes one has to wait for things to happen on film sets. That's okay. No doubt Kareena Kapoor is the hottest screen queen. I play Tusshar's sister and my name is Ekta and I only watch Balajee serials the whole day. "We had the Saala song in Golmaal Returns from before Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. But yes I've heard it's going from the narration." Adds Pritam, "At the moment composing songs for Kareena to perform on screen is a big high for any composer.The turning point in my career were the songs for Kareena in Jab We Met. I composed one item number for Kareena recently in Billoo Barbar and now two in Gol Maal Returns."

Vidya Balan has a problem with John Abraham?

The latest is that Vidya Balan has walked out of a David Dhawan film. A source has reportedly said, "Vidya is not doing UTV's 'Hook Ya Crook'. Vidya felt that after 'Salaam-E-Ishq', she and John needed to do a film which had substantial roles for both. She had reservations as Dhawan's heroines don't have much to do except sing, dance and look glamorous. She voiced her concern to the director who promised to make changes in her role. Vidya wants to do more women-oriented roles. As she didn't want to upset David, she quietly opted out though the producer and David are insisting that Vidya is still doing it." Vidya's spokesperson insists that she's not doing the movie because of the date issues. But the buzz is that it's because of the presence of lead actor John Abraham! Sohail Khan has been entertaining the viewers with each and every film of his. Once again he is back with his new style of entertainment in Sameer Karniks film Heroes. Lets ask him other than acting what else he has in store in the direction and production front. Q- After Hello, Heroes is arriving so are you nervous or excited? A- Actually I am very restless as I was waiting for the release of this film. The plus point of this film is that every character of this film is justified in their respective roles. I personally feel its one the biggest film in my career. Q- Tell a little about your character in Heroes? A-My name is Sameer in this film but everyone calls me a bull coz I'm thick headed, like I go around doing a lot of foolish stuff. I don't have any aim in life. My only dream in life is to fly to America but I dont want to work hard for it. I and Vatsal are actually media students who have to make a film which is a part of the project given in college. We succeed in our task when we complete our film on our heroes who in spite of not being a part of the army willingly help others. Q- What would you like to say about all your other co stars? A-I had a wonderful experience with all of them. Amrita Arora is casted opposite me ,as she is a part of our family there is a different kind of comfort level that we share, but above all I was really impressed with Preity. This is my first film with her and I have already become her fan. Not only is she an excellent actress she is also an excellent human being. If she doesn't have an objection then I would love to work with her in future again. I liked Sunny Deol too, he is so professional that he is only focused to his work. He never looks or wants to know what's happening around him. Q- Which was the most memorable moment of this entire film? A- I have almost seen the entire world and then finally drawn this conclusion that our India is the best amongst all. For no reason we go to other places in abroad for our shoots. I feel I have discovered the real India during the making of this film. Q- In a particular scene in this film you are seen without a shirt, what did big bro Salman have to say? A-Yes he saw me and immediately commented as to why am I looking so fat? I told him that I'm playing the character of a bull on hearing that he bursted out laughing. I agree that im really looking fat in this film coz they wanted me to look fat and lazy and bigger than Vatsal in size. When I was shooting for this scene I was sure that the viewers would compare me to Salman so I thought why the hell I even am trying or why have I even agreed to do this scene. But as it was the requirement of the film I had to go ahead with it. Q- Sameer Karnik's previous film Nanhe Jaisalmer did not do well, how did you feel working with him? A-After working with him I realized that Sameer is an excellent director. The reason behind his previous film not doing well was his story which was technically very strong. This time he has selected the right story, not only am I convinced but Preity, Salman, Mithun Da and Sunny Deol too feel the same. They all believed in the story and agreed to act for it and finally it's made beautifully. Q- As you are a director yourself have you ever ended up suggesting your views while working with another director? A-Whatever discussions we have are only when we are listening to the story. Once we have entered the sets we do not discuss anything until and unless there are any changes in the story. In case the director makes certain changes in the script then he has to give a clarification to the actor as to why did he do it. If the actor agrees with him then they go ahead with the changes if no then the plans are cancelled. But I personally never do anything like this. Q- Then should we say that in spite of being a director yourself you are a director's actor? A- Being a director myself I respect all directors. Q—Define each of your co stars in a single word A-Sunny Deol- strong, Bobby Deol- determined, Salman Khan- excellent, Dino Morea-friendly, Preity Zinta-professional Q- According to you which of them look better in the costume of a sardar, Salman or Sunny? A-I guess Sunny looks perfect in the costume of a sardar but Salman's physique is better. Q- You've been working with Salman continuously in your last three films, how do you feel working with him? A-Very easy and good. We understand each other so well and that shows in our work.Salman himself agrees that to make a successful film there is a lot of team work required. Not only Salman if each and every actor in the film compliments each other and work then the film is bound to do well. Q- You share a wonderful onscreen chemistry with Salman which the viewers appreciate would you continue doing so in your forthcoming films? A-All the three films that we are coming together are different.Mr and Mrs. Khanna, Veer and Heroes are the three films from which MrAnd Mrs. Khanna is a romantic film made on a light note and I think the viewers are going to enjoy watching it. Q- Producing, directing or acting, amongst the three which one do you really enjoy? A- Production is what I simply enjoy doing, accumulating all the talent in front of the camera is what excites me. also when your are the producer of the film you are connected to each and every thing that's happening in this way you get to learn a lot. Q- Currently what's the status of Amar Akbar Anthony? A-As I finish Parter 2 by next Sept or October we start with this film. Q- Would you like to play any specific character out of the any book? A- This is a difficult question to ask as I do not read books I only watch films. Q- It's in news that Salman Khan, David Dhawan Govinda and you are all planning to make Tom and Jerry? A-I haven't thought much except that I have registered the title Tom and Jerry. We are planning to make a comedy flick on two actors. Actually a lot of people thought that it's Parter 2 with that name but that's not true. I would like to say that the name Partner has become a brand and I would always maintain its purity. Q- What are your forthcoming films? A- Veer, Mr. and Mrs. Khanna and Kisaan are the major ones.

Preity Zinta tells why she doesn't like Shiney

Shiney Ahuja can't get along with his female co-stars. Well it seems just so! First Kangana Ranaut made it clear that she and Shiney aren't exactly on good terms. Then during the making of 'Metro', there was news about Shiney throwing tantrums and exhibiting childish behaviour when Shilpa Shetty happened to praise her other co –star Kay Kay Menon more than him! Later Shiney dismissed it as a wrong piece of news but we aren't sure if we want to believe him. Especially now since the well behaved and straightforward dame of B-Town Preity Zinta too has to say a few negative things about him! KARZZZZ would be super-duper HIT - Shweta Kumar

There are just 2 more days to go for the release of KARZZZZ and Shweta Kumar, who makes her debut opposite Himesh Reshammiya in the film, is already quite confident that the film would hit the bulls� eye at the box office.

'I can comfortably say that KARZZZZ would be a super–duper hit', says Shweta in an animated tone, 'Luckily all things are falling in line. KARZZZZ is the sole notable Hindi film release of the week and even in coming weeks, I don't see much competition.'

How about HEROES and ROADSIDE ROMEO which arrive on 24th October, a week after KARZZZZ?

'I guess children may still prefer ROADSIDE ROMEO but that's about it. Apart from this, KARZZZZ should be hot favorite even in its second week. Promotion of the film has been fantastic and the music is already doing superb all over. Moreover, Himesh is coming on the big screen after more than a year. I am sure his fans have been longing for this moment', says Shweta in an excited tone.

'For teenagers, KARZZZZ is an event in itself. I know of people who are really curious to see how the remake has turned out to be. There would hardly be anyone who hasn't seen the original KARZ. Now as Satishji (Kaushik) reprises the classic, today's generation would really be looking forward to what's in store.'

Talking about how she is feeling before the D–Day, Shweta comments, 'I guess coming from a filmy background helps. Yes, I cannot deny though that it is a mixture of each and every emotion. As this is my first movie, I myself have a lot of expectations from the film. I am looking for people's reaction and let me admit it – I do sometimes get nervous thinking if people don't like me or my film. Still, I won't say that I am dying of nervousness.'

Apparently, this sequence which has Ajay Devgan and Celina Jaitley dancing with each other was supposed to be shot as a song but was later picturised with only background music.

Confirms Rohit Shetty, "In the script, there was the requirement of this song where Celina and Ajay get into a seducing rendezvous. However, by the time we began shooting for the film, we realized that kids and family audience were looking at me to churn out an out family masala entertainer, just like GOLMAAL. I realized that for the audience I was catering too, I should not get into typical massy affair."

This is when the decision to throw out the song was arrived at, right?

"True", says Rohit promptly, "I pronto decided to leave the song and instead have a fun sequence in the film. Now what you see is a hilarious outing between Ajay and Celina on a boat. I can't help but laugh every time I see this sequence. Ajay (Devgan) had done some really funny dance steps in the song and the final result has been even more lovable than I could have bargained for."

How exactly?

"Well, the song sees Celina lifting Ajay and having him swirl around all over in the air as dolphins keep jumping from one side of the boat to another. It is mad and an out and out spoof sequence", signs off Rohit.

Hrithik excited about Bhansali's project!

A section of the trade was of the view that the steep prices that some of the sub–distributors of SINGH IS KINNG paid, reduced its profits and also made it lose in Bihar, despite its humongous collections. But if those prices were too high then listen to this!

Believe it or don't but the producers of the Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone starrer, CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, are quoting Rs. 20 crore for the distribution rights of Bombay circuit and Rs. 10 crore for Delhi–U.P.! For C.P. Berar and Rajasthan rights, they want Rs. 3 crore each and for C.I. circuit, they want nothing less than Rs. 2 crore. As per the latest, due to its postponement to January 2008, many of the territories and circuits are still being negotiated for.

Shah Rukh and Priyanka's Item Song

According to sources it was a toss-up between Rani Mukherjee and Priyanka for the third item song with SRK in Billo Barber.

"But after Rani appeared on Salman Khan's game show Dus Ka Dum and knowing there's no love lost between Salman and Priyanka, the scales tilted automatically towards Priyanka, " says the source.

What Shah Rukh Khan wants Shah Rukh Khan gets. This, Priyadarshan realized as soon as he began shooting for Billoo Barber.

Says Priyan, "Since Shah Rukh plays a film star in the film I needed him to do some big glamorous song and dance numbers with some top heroines."

Priyan decided to stay completely out of the picture.

"I left the choice to Shah Rukh. I knew all he had to do was pick up the phone and ask any of his leading ladies."

One item song with Kareena Kpaoor was shot at the very start of the shooting.

"At this very moment I'm shooting a second item song with Deepika and Shah Rukh. That's again a very catchy number and Shah Rukh is having a ball shooting it with Deepika, " informs Priyan.

Interestingly Priyan was supposed to launch Deepika two years ago in a film called Pirate. "But that didn't work out. She made her debut with Shah Rukh. Now she's working with him again. And I also got a chance to work with her.Don't ask who's the lucky one."

Now a third item song has also been finalized for Billoo Barber.

Priyan informs the third lucky luscious lady to shake with Shah Rukh would be Priyanka Chopra.

Though SRK has done item numbers earlier with Aishwarya Rai in Shakti and in Rakesh Roshan's Krazzy 4, this would be Priyanka's first item number.

Shahid Kapoor and Rani Mukherji to romance each other!

It seems all the bong babes of Bollywood aspire to romance guys half their age. After Bipasha Basu wooed Ranbir Kapoor in Bachcna Ae Haseeno it’s the turn of Rani Mukherjee. The ageing beauty who’s had a spate of flops at the Box Office including Laage Chunari Mein Daag and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic will be seen with chocolatey boy Shahid Kapoor.
Although Rani and Shahid have never appeared together on screen their jodi seem to have caught the imagination of the directors.
