If SINGH IS KINNG was expensive, listen to this!

A section of the trade was of the view that the steep prices that some of the sub–distributors of SINGH IS KINNG paid, reduced its profits and also made it lose in Bihar, despite its humongous collections. But if those prices were too high then listen to this!

Believe it or don't but the producers of the Akshay Kumar and Deepika Padukone starrer, CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA, are quoting Rs. 20 crore for the distribution rights of Bombay circuit and Rs. 10 crore for Delhi–U.P.! For C.P. Berar and Rajasthan rights, they want Rs. 3 crore each and for C.I. circuit, they want nothing less than Rs. 2 crore. As per the latest, due to its postponement to January 2008, many of the territories and circuits are still being negotiated for.

Well, we just wonder what the trade feels about the going rates of the Nikhil Advani directed CHANDNI CHOWK TO CHINA!

I won't be a mother again: Vidya Malvade

"Chak De!" girl Vidya Malvade, who to everyone's surprise played Minissha Lamba's mother in "Kidnap", says she won't play a mom again.

"I have played a mother's role in 'Kidnap', (but) that doesn't mean I will be doing these types of roles again. I won't accept an offer from any producer or director if he comes to me with a mother's role, " Vidya told.

"Kidnap" was offered to Vidya before the Shah Rukh Khan-starrer "Chak De! India", in which she played the captain of a women's hockey team.

" 'Kidnap' came to me when I had nothing on hand and I accepted it as it was an interesting role. Moreover, what excited me was that I was offered a role opposite Sanjay Dutt whom I have known for a long time and respect a lot, " Vidya said.

Directed by Sanjay Gadhvi of "Dhoom" fame, the film that released last week was panned by most critics.

Vidya said she was disappointed to see many of her scenes being edited out.

"After seeing this movie, I came to know how important editing is. Many of my scenes that I was looking forward to were edited out and it surprised me. But I think it depends on the director and the editor and they have done what was best for the film."

Although Vidya has decided not to play a mother's role again, she doesn't regret doing "Kidnap".

"I played a character. As an actor we should think of the character rather than our image and other things. At that time it was the best offer; so I accepted it. I don't repent playing the character as long as the film is good and successful, " said Vidya.

"As I don't belong to a film family, I don't have many options. I have to be content with what I get, " said the model- turned actress who debuted in 2003 with "Inteha".

" 'Chak De' gave me recognition and I am happy that people know me now. Now I want to be a complete actress playing diverse roles. I don't want to stick to a particular image. I want to move on, " she quipped.

The actress currently has three films in her kitty. In "Tum Milo To Sahi", she plays Suniel Shetty's wife. Directed by Kabir Sadanand, the film also stars Nana Patekar and Dimple Kapadia.

"I also have an interesting part in 'Striker', which revolves around a family and I am part of that family, " said Vidya, not wanting to reveal anything more.

"Striker" is being directed by Chandan Arora and also stars Siddharth of "Rang De Basanti" fame.

The third film she is doing is a comedy titled "King Con". "It's a fun film where I play the part of a car racer."

Directed by Tigmanshu Dhulia, "King Con" will also feature Govinda, Rimii Sen and Celina Jaitley.

Dil ki ghanti kab baj jaaye, kisi ko nahin pata: Gul Panag

Q.Your man’s must-have qualities?
A.He should know what I want without me having to say it.

Q.Can your friendship for him blossom into love?
A.Yes, why not, it can happen that the person, who I may have always thought to be just a buddy, may suddenly become someone I love. Dil ki ghanti kab baj jaaye, kisi ko nahin pata.

Q. If he is among current Bollywood hunks, he would be like...
A.Most girls would love to choose Hrithik (even though he is happily married) as he is the ‘take home and show mom’ type of guy. If I wanted somebody more interesting, then it would have to be Bachchan Junior.

Q.Is changing partners okay with you?
A.It’s normal, one does grow out of love. Today, I may like A, tomorrow B may come along and in that situation if I still stick to A, then I would be doing injustice to him, for though I will be with him, my heart will be with the other guy.

Q.If other girls make a pass at your man...
A.I would feel jealous and ask those chicks to stay away from my guy. I will not give the PC answer that I am happy that my guy is being appreciated.

Q.His metrosexuality?
A.I bet metrosexual men are vainer than women. They spend more time in front of the mirror than their women. Some men have houses full of mirrors, where they keep checking their profile. On the whole, I like a metrosexual man for there is competition right at home ? on who looks better.

Q.Is an approval from your parents for him a must?
A.Yes, I would prefer a love marriage which is arranged by them. If my parents don’t like my guy, I would try to convince them lovingly. It would be totally wrong to dump my folks who have brought me up.

Q.He should take you out on a romantic evening to...?
A.A beautiful sea-facing restaurant for an expensive candlelight dinner under the stars.

Watch Dostana to know about gay insinuations: Abhishek Bachchan

Abhishek Bachchan on shooting through stress, & otherwise...

Lots of activity and stress in the family. Does it bog you down?
No. I don't stress about what happens outside my work area. I focus on my work area. Everyone is under pressure. You just have to deal with it.

My stressbuster is my work. That's my main concern in life. And if I can't focus on the work then I've no business being an actor. That's one of the first things you're taught at acting school.

How was the Unforgettable tour?
It was…unforgettable! It was the audience that made it such. I realized the immense value of the connectivity with the audience. They love you unconditionally. They don't come to the concerts to criticize or judge but to participate.

And it's so wonderful to reach out to them on on a one-to-one basis. It was just great. And to be on stage with all my family and friends was just overwhelming

Did you see your father in The Last Lear?
It's the first English-language film I've seen dad do. It's a theatre-based film. But he balanced out the theatrics with a very subtle performance. That's a very hard thing to do for any actor. His best? He just keeps getting better with every film. So his best one is always the next one.

Drona gave you a new image?
I've never done a film like this. I had to prepare myself for wirework (which I learnt from Mr Shyam Kaushik), sword -fencing (which I had learnt in drama school), stunt riding on a horse, etc. Richard Ryan, the sword- master from Troy trained and choreographed my sword- fighting scenes.

Then since I had to do an underwater scene I had to learn scuba diving which I had never done before. I literally had to be underwater for 8-10 hours. I loved it! When I was out breath there were people who rushed underwater with oxygen masks.

It took about six months before we started shooting. By the grace of God there were no accidents. But a stunt director from South Africa during a train sequence dislocated his shoulder. But he was back shooting in the next day.

You looked very different in Drona.
My director Goldie Behl was very sure about the look he wanted for my character. He wanted Drona to have a beard since he was a king and needed to look regal. Hence the long-flowing hair, hence all those hair bands that the media was having field day speculating on.

What about speculations regarding the film's extensive re-shooting?
I find it very childish to keep clarifying such things. But since you are asking…Drona started in December 2006. We shot for 70 days. Then we took a break and resumed shooting in September. Then we were done.

The only reshooting we had to do was when our set in Bikaner got washed away by a freak of nature. Have you heard of torrential rains in Bikaner? We had to re-erect the set and shoot.

Then we needed a year of post-production since Drona is very FX-centric film. Now we're ready. I've never done this kind of action scenes before…like hanging under a moving train. Goldie's dream was to make something never done before.

Goldie was wanted to make a crime thriller with me. But one weekend when I was shooting for Guru he came down to Chennai and said the calling of the moment was we had to be adventurous.

The minute he narrated Drona I knew we had to do it. Goldie made the film exactly the way he wanted to do it.It's definitely the biggest film I've made.

You've acted with your mom for the first time in a Hindi film.
We were together in Laga Chunri Mein Daag, though not as mother and son. Unfortunately she had a very small role in Drona. One of these days I hope to do a full-fledged film with her.

There's talk of all three of you coming together in Rakeysh Mehra's Bhairavi.
That's not true. Bhairavi is not happening right now. Rakeysh is doing a film called Paanch Kaurav with me and Dad. Mom isn't in it.Again, an action film. I enjoy action. My first film Refugee was an action film.

Next you've Karan Johar's Dostana.
This was a film I had agreed to do right after Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna. After Drona that's just the comic break I need. Every year I get a chance to be versatile. Last year after Guru I had Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom. In fact I had immensely exciting roles right from Dhoom. Now there are the 3 'd's coming up in my life Drona, Dostana and Delhi 6.

What are all these gay insinuations in the trailer of Dostana?
They explain themselves when you see the film. It's a mad comedy. And it was wonderful to shoot with John Abraham again. Just because we shot in Miami doesn't mean that the pleasure quotient was increased. We were working. But it was fun on the sets because we were all friends.

Now you're working with your wife and Mani Ratnam again?
And I'm very excited. Every time I come together with Mani there's something special happening. Guru gave me a role that I didn't expect to get at this age and stage of my career.

When Mani or Ramu are there they're bound to give you a challenging role. For then it isn't about commercial viability. It's about conviction. Some of my closest friends had told me Guru won't work. It went on to be one of the biggest hits of the year.

But a lot of people feel it clicked because you and Aishwarya were together?
These things don't influence the audience. Why didn't Umrao Jaan work ? It came just three months earlier. Guru went far beyond the initial curiosity to see us together just because we were engaged.

Cinema history is peppered with instances of real-life couples not doing well together on screen. In my very first film I was introduced to the public as Mr Amitabh Bachchan's son. Why didn't it work?

If they don't like your film they won't go to see see a pair whether they're together or divorced. And Sarkar Raj did exceedingly well although we were not really a couple in the film.

I'm sure Mani's new film will be very unique to both of us. We start in October. He's giving me another role to sink my teeth into.

Rahul is not my boyfriend, he is my friend: Payal

Only Rahul Mahajan could get close to her, kiss her and scold her in season two of reality show "Bigg Boss", but actress Payal Rohatgi has denied any romantic involvement with him after her eviction from the show.

"Rahul is not my boyfriend, he is my friend, " Payal told over phone from Mumbai.

In August, Rahul, son of the late Bharatiya Janata Party leader and former union minister Pramod Mahajan, formally parted from his wife Shweta after a Gurgaon court passed a decree on their mutual divorce petition. His closeness with Payal was an alleged reason for the break-up.

But Payal, who was evicted from the reality show Friday, maintains that "Rahul is only a good friend".

Viewers were witness to their intimacy on "Bigg Boss" when they were assigned the task of playing volleyball in a swimming pool.

Commenting upon their physical proximity on the show, she said: "The pool was six feet deep and I'm only five feet six inches tall. I needed someone to shift me around and hold me in the pool. I was more comfortable with Rahul because I know him. We have partied and have had dinners together.

"I couldn't let others like Debojit (Saha), Ashutosh (Kaushik) and Raja (Chaudhary) come as close. After all they are men, " she said.

Payal was criticised by her inmates for her closeness to Rahul, her cat fights with item girl Sambhavna Seth, wearing a bikini on the show and constantly wearing make-up.

Sambhavna alleged that Payal is "fake" and that she used to backstab people on the show.

But Payal denies her allegations saying: "I was very neutral. I was not there to make friends for life. I just wanted to be cordial and nice to people so that we could live together in peace. So there is no question of having backstabbed anyone. It would have been so had I nominated Rahul, who is a good friend, " Payal said.

As far as being called "fake" is concerned, she said: "I was there to gain visibility for the benefit of my career. If I dabbed on make-up to look good on the show, why are people complaining?

"She (Sambhavna) has said that I used to wake up at six in the morning to touch up and then used to sleep again. But then why was this footage not shown? It would have made for a juicy shot. 'Bigg Boss' was not a house, it was a house-like situation and being an actor, I had to take care of the way I looked on screen, " Payal said.

After coming out of the "Bigg Boss" house, the actress says she is dying to pamper herself with "a manicure, pedicure and a good massage" to rejuvenate herself mentally and physically.

"I am very happy to be back in the real world. I was there to gain visibility and show the other side of personality and I have been successful in doing that. People had only seen the glamorous side of Payal Rohtagi, but now they know that I even cry, " said Payal who is now looking forward to getting some "lead roles in good films".

Payal was seen in films "Dhol" and "Corporate". In Madhur Bhandarkar's critically acclaimed "Corporate", she danced to the popular item song "O Sikander".

Now she is looking forward to her next film "Dil Kabaddi", in which she will be seen with Soha Ali Khan, Konkona Sen Sharma and Irrfan Khan, among others.

Shah Rukh and Priyanka's Item Song

According to sources it was a toss-up between Rani Mukherjee and Priyanka for the third item song with SRK in Billo Barber.

"But after Rani appeared on Salman Khan's game show Dus Ka Dum and knowing there's no love lost between Salman and Priyanka, the scales tilted automatically towards Priyanka, " says the source.

What Shah Rukh Khan wants Shah Rukh Khan gets. This, Priyadarshan realized as soon as he began shooting for Billoo Barber.

Says Priyan, "Since Shah Rukh plays a film star in the film I needed him to do some big glamorous song and dance numbers with some top heroines."

Priyan decided to stay completely out of the picture.

"I left the choice to Shah Rukh. I knew all he had to do was pick up the phone and ask any of his leading ladies."

One item song with Kareena Kpaoor was shot at the very start of the shooting.

"At this very moment I'm shooting a second item song with Deepika and Shah Rukh. That's again a very catchy number and Shah Rukh is having a ball shooting it with Deepika, " informs Priyan.

Interestingly Priyan was supposed to launch Deepika two years ago in a film called Pirate. "But that didn't work out. She made her debut with Shah Rukh. Now she's working with him again. And I also got a chance to work with her.Don't ask who's the lucky one."

Now a third item song has also been finalized for Billoo Barber.

Priyan informs the third lucky luscious lady to shake with Shah Rukh would be Priyanka Chopra.

Though SRK has done item numbers earlier with Aishwarya Rai in Shakti and in Rakesh Roshan's Krazzy 4, this would be Priyanka's first item number.

SRK to retire in 3 years

A source reveals, “Shah Rukh knows that his time in Bollywood as an actor is limited. An actor can only go on for so long and with the kind of roles he plays – young romantics – then he will not be able to do that for any longer. He is already getting old. Shah Rukh hopes to retire from films within the next ¾ years after which he will concentrate on production business. Shah Rukh will not make a complete exit from acting but intends to star in at least one film per year, but this will be for his own banner and the role will be of a supporting actor.”

The source adds, “Shah Rukh has already started looking – and it has just been announced – for land in Dubai where he intends to build housing and shopping complexes. It is on this patch of land that Shah Rukh will build his much famous abode Mannat. He has already told his wife Gauri to make the plans and get the ideal design created. It has to be identical to Mannat in Mumbai. The Khans are much fond of this house.”

Well that’s a sad news but we wish SRK good luck in whatever he desires.

DASVIDANIYA makes an early impression

Promotion of DASVIDANIYA may yet be waiting to get into a full throttle but the film has already been noticed by those who want their cinema to come with a quality tag. First look of the film gives a clear impression that this Vinay Pathak starrer goes beyond the ha–ha land and instead has a sensitive side to it as well.

''I had loved Vinay Pathak in BHEJA FRY and have followed his work in movies like MANORAMA – SIX FEET UNDER and JISM, both of which showed a different side of his persona as he was seen in a relatively serious role. One look at DASVIDANIYA and I knew that yet again I can expect a quality performance from him'', says Kesavan, a Media Manager in Mumbai.

Praneeta Singh, an IT professional, has similar sentiments to share, ''I like the overall feel of the film. There have been countless senseless comedy films which have been churned out in the recent past. However, DASVIDANIYA comes like a whiff of fresh air. I like the basic theme of a man making a list of 10 things that he wants to do before he dies. A sensitive tale like this comes across as a different experience. I want to see how Vinay Pathak has carried off such a unique character.''

Coming with a tagline of 'Life, Death and Life Again', DASVIDANIYA sees the directorial debut of Shashant Shah. The film has music by Kailash Kher who is yet again known for his sensitive compositions while star cast boasts of actors like Ranvir Shorey, Rajat Kapoor, Neha Dhupia and Saurabh Shukla who seem to have formed an alternate camp of their own.

The film is aiming for a 7th November release.

Shah Rukh Khan : Fortune of the King

Find out in this soul-baring interview why this member of Bollywood royalty, whose parents named him ‘face of the king’, is often in tears. Deepika Shetty unravels the mystery called Mr.Shah Rukh Khan.

TO his tens of millions of fans, actor and producer Shah Rukh Khan is the unrivalled King of Bollywood, known for his macho film persona.

But the high-energy, fast-talking superstar, who is in Singapore this weekend for the Zee Carnival, showcasing Indian entertainment, gives a rare glimpse of his sensitive side in an hour-long telephone interview from Mumbai.

India’s top romantic leading man confesses that in real life, he is “painfully shy of women”. Khan, who turns 43 next month and has been married to Gauri Khan for 17 years, with whom he has two children, adds: “I am just very shy of girls. I have never looked into my wife’s purse or her wardrobe.”

The man who is everywhere in India €“ from movie billboards in the streets and shows on TV to making headlines for buying a cricket team and supporting the recent Bollywood film workers’ strike - also has another surprising revelation.

He says he is “an intensely private and reclusive man” who cries when he thinks of his late parents.

Khan’s Muslim parents - Meer Taj Mohammad Khan and Lateef Fatima - died before he found fame in Bollywood and to this day, he mourns the loss that time cannot heal.

He says: “I often go to the terrace of my home and cry. I cry not because they haven’t been able to see the successful side of me, I cry because even if I was a complete failure, they would have wished me well and loved me unconditionally. Sometimes I cry over silly things, like my car breaking down.

“I end up saying, ‘Mum, I wish you were around, you could have told me what to do.’ Even my kids know that it’s okay to see their dad cry.”

Another thing he does not talk about much publicly is his bad back, caused by his gruelling work schedule and risky action sequences. He became a man of steel after a titanium disc was inserted into his spine for a prolapsed disc in 2004.

But he says: “I don’t like to talk about it simply because so much love, so much goodness has been given to me by my fans over the years. I don’t want to bog them down with the little pain I am dealing with.”

He promises his fans will only see the good stuff when he visits Singapore for the Zee Carnival, organised by the Indian Television network at the Suntec Convention Centre (yesterday and today). Khan and TV stars such as Aditya Narayan, Raja Hasan, Iqbal Khan, Poonam Jatau, and Sharad and Kirti Kelkar will make several appearances. Also present is India’s celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor.

Beyond his fans, Khan also stands by the people he works with. He called off his shoots and lent his support to the protest by Bollywood workers about low wages, late payments and the persistent use of non-union actors. (The strike ended after two days on Oct 3.)

The star, who has an 11-year-old son, Aryan, and a daughter, Suhana, eight, declares: “People think I am flamboyant. I am not at all like that. I’m becoming more and more reclusive. All I do is work and spend time with my family.”

Of course, there is much more to him than that daily grind. His face represents the largest film industry in the world. India produces more than 1,000 films a year, of which a third are in Hindi, India’s official language, and their estimated viewership is said to be 3.6 billion annually - that is a billion more than Hollywood.

Though the numbers may be tipping in favour of Bollywood, he believes there are things that the Indian film industry can learn from Hollywood: “In terms of organisation, technology and its distribution network, it is way ahead of us. I have a lot of respect for these aspects of Hollywood. But I think the stories are with us here in Bollywood.”

Critics often say Bollywood’s plots are far-fetched. Actors can go through multiple costume changes and the location can go anywhere from Agra to the Alps in a single song sequence.

No-nos on screen

But Khan does not think Indian cinema is all fantasy. Referring to themes of Hollywood blockbusters such as Deep Impact and Independence Day, he says: “To me, the president of the United States saving the world from a meteorite is an amazing fantasy.”

On the other hand, “our fantasies are achievable; our fantasies are smaller - they are about having a house, a small car. We are not bothered about aliens”.

Those fantasies certainly sell. He has delivered some of the biggest hits in Bollywood, including Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) to more recent ones such as Chak De! India (2007) and Om Shanti Om (2007).

And that is despite the fact that he says there are some things he would never do on screen: “I won’t ride a horse and I won’t kiss a girl.”

He adds: “I think it’s because I am so painfully shy of women that I romance them so well as a character on screen.”

Khan has acted in more than 60 films and produced seven of his own. His roles have been as varied as the films he has made though one onscreen character does come close to the real Khan.

“I am a lot like the no-nonsense hockey coach Kabir Khan in Chak De, though I am not that stern,” he adds with a laugh.

A lot has been written about Khan - documentaries have been made on his life, there are books on him and the awards keep coming. But he feels a lot of this would not have happened without help from his co-stars.

“I have been blessed to work alongside some of the most beautiful and talented women in the industry. I owe at least half of my success to these women. Among other things, they have taught me how to dance and how to look good. I am what I am because of what they have done for me.”

He holds a special place for choreographer-turned-director Farah Khan, who directed him in Om Shanti Om and Main Hoon Na (2004).

“Women directors end up making films a certain way. They are sensitive and emotional. But Farah has gone for sheer entertainment. She has the balls to make a film like a man. I respect that,” says Khan.

And when he is not talking or making films, he likes to settle down with a book.

His home library has a collection of more than 5,000 books, of which there are at least three that he wants to turn into films.

“Other talented film-makers are already doing that, though. I read Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts even before it came to India and asked my director friends if they’d want to make a film - now Hollywood has taken it. Two other books I’ve enjoyed a lot are Mark Haddon’s murder mystery The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and Yann Martel’s fantasy adventure Life of Pi.”

For now, he has his eyes peeled on biopics. “I am interested in biopics about people who have led interesting lives.”

During the lengthy interview, he breaks only to call out for a cup of coffee and a cigarette.

The temptation to light up comes despite the fact that India’s Health Ministry has said it planned to bombard the actor with literature detailing the harm caused by cigarettes. (A ban on smoking in public places took effect in India on Oct 2.)

When asked about his light-up during the interview, this very public man with a very private persona says ruefully: “I am law-abiding to the extent of being stupid sometimes. I never beat a red light, I always obey the rules. Of course, my cigarette-smoking is always getting me into trouble.”

Shahid Kapoor and Rani Mukherji to romance each other!

It seems all the bong babes of Bollywood aspire to romance guys half their age. After Bipasha Basu wooed Ranbir Kapoor in Bachcna Ae Haseeno it’s the turn of Rani Mukherjee. The ageing beauty who’s had a spate of flops at the Box Office including Laage Chunari Mein Daag and Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic will be seen with chocolatey boy Shahid Kapoor.
Although Rani and Shahid have never appeared together on screen their jodi seem to have caught the imagination of the directors. Believe it or not the two stars will be romance each other in two back to back movies. The first will be made by Rani’s on and off beau Aditya Chopra who seems to be obsessed with his lady love under the Yash Raj banner. The second will be directed by Priyadarshan.

If reports are to be believed Rani and Shahid will feature in a very bold scene in the Aditya Chopra flick. It will be interesting to see the chemistry between Rani and her sworn enemy Kareena’s ex beau. The movie will give Rani a chance to hide her ageing signs starring opposite a much younger hero!

Hello Movie Review

Hello has a clumsy start and totters its way through only to find its momentum, before the interval. The second half is better but the packing up of Bakshi which was cleverly shown in the book, leaves a lot to be desired.

The basic flaw in the movie is that the first hour of the Hello is wasted in establishing the characters, there is hardly any story being told. But the movie does find its groove after the first hour and goes steady, before dwindling again in the climax. Hello , seems to have low production values(the only time the movie looks really awe-inspiring is when the credits are displayed at the start).

Story of Hello: Shyam(Sharman Joshi) is the team leader whose career is stagnant and he is well on his way losing his girlfriend Priyanka(Gul Panag) who is working with him to an NRI. Radhika(Amrita Arora) has to take a lot of taunts from her mother-in-law and has to bear with the long distant relationship of her husband(Arbaaz Khan) whom she realizes later, has cheated on her. Esha (Isha Koppikar) has high hopes of being a model and even succumbs to casting couch for her goal). Vroom(Sohail Khan) loves Esha but is pained by the fact that the call center is going nowhere and Esha is eluding her. Military Uncle(Sharat Saxena) has his own story, he does email support while the rest take calls. He dotes on his grandchild, whom he has been barred by his family to communicate with.

Plus points of Hello: The cute special effect of the devil in Shyam’s mind is well shot. The conflict where every character meets with his/her own problems is presented well. Gul Panag and Sharman Joshi have good chemistry. The song picturizations especially of Karle Baby Dance Dance is well executed.

Minus points of Hello: The dismal screenplay and tacky first half are unbearable. The humor element which were well splashed in the book is missing in Hello. Some key points in the book like Have More Restaurant(which was cutely shown in the book) is missing. But yes, it is tough to scrap and include parts of the book to incorporate in a film. But better justice could have been done. Suresh Menon is pathetic and is an embarrassment to Hello, torture to viewers. Salman Khan looks haggard, drunk and disinterested. The eye bags and the double chin: yuck the stud never looks so pathetic.

Performances in Hello: Sohail Khan stands out in his portrayal of Vroom, you can’t imagine anyone else in his place. Sharman Joshi is apt and does a good job. Sadly, Salman Khan is boring and Dalip Tahil with his over the top hamming, makes you throw a cell phone at him. The girls are wonderful, look good and act well. The pick of the lot, is an understated performance by Amrita Arora. Gul Panag looks gorgeous and performs well. Esha Kopikkar is okay.
What one does not understand is why the ‘condom’ dialogue was edited in the love making scene of Hello between Sharman Joshi and Gul Panag. Overall, Hello is a onetime watch.

Mona Singh signed for ‘3 Idiots’

Mona Singh (Jassi fame) is all smiles these days and why not? The girl is not only getting rave reviews about her performance with Harbhajan Singh on ‘Ek Khiladi Ek Haseena’ but has also got her big break with Raj Kumar Hirani signing her for a pivotal role in ‘3 Idiots’. Apparently, she has a track totally separate from the Aamir-Kareena one and also not featured in Chetan Bhagat’s novel.

Mona confirmed the news saying, “Ya, I am doing Raj Kumar Hirani’s film. And I couldn’t have hoped for a better birthday gift. What do I play? All I can tell you is, I don’t play one of the idiots. I play the sayaani (wise) character, ha ha.”

Talking about her long wait to get a role on the bigger screen, Mona says, “A couple of projects that were meant to happen never did. But I’m glad Raju Hirani signed me. It’s a fabulous role.”

The Singh girl is all bowled over by Harbhajan Singh and says, “In fact Bhajji was one of the first to wish me on my birthday. We’ve become very close buddies. I think it’s the Punjabi connection. He has a reputation for being hotheaded. I’ve quite a temper myself. So we’re fine with one another.” Mona has been guiding Bhajji with his dance steps. “I’ve almost become his choreographer. He completely depends on me to see me through.”

What's wrong in asking for a Condom: Gul Panag

Maybe that's why they call Bollywood as the other name for 'unexpectedness'.

It's kind of strange that on one hand, there are zillions of ads on radio and TV that advocate (in their own creative ways) the importance of using a condom.

But, on the other hand, there is our Censor Board which has ordered the chopping of a scene from the forthcoming film Hello that has actress Gul Panag mouthing the usage of 'condom'.

The scene in question has Gul asking Sharman Joshi (to whom she is paired opposite) whether he is carrying a condom before they have sex.

The deletion of the 'condom' word from the scene has angered Gul to no end, so much so that she is now planning to write a letter to the Censor officials about this absurd decision on their part.

Gul argues that since the scene required her and Sharman to make love, she, like any educated woman asks if he is carrying a condom, before they get on with the act.

Gul finds it funny that even though the lovemaking scene is retained, the word 'condom' has been chopped off from the dialogue. She also added that this decision only exhibits the double standards of the Censor Board.

Imran will sport a new look for his next sex comedy

Imran sure seems to be following on his mamu's footsteps. Like we can always depend on Aamir Khan to have a new look or at least a different haircut for every movie, it seems we can expect the same from Imran.

The chocolate boy of Jaane Tu...who has gone all rugged for his film Kidnap where he plays a character with serious dark shades, will be seen in yet another new avatar for his uncle's home production Delhi Belly.

Delhi Belly directed by Abhinav Deo is going to be a sex comedy, we hear. And Imran who's sporting a beard these days is all excited for the project. "Apart from sporting a beard, I will also be growing my hair long for the film. We have started shooting for the film in Delhi; the lead girl had not yet been finalised. Regarding the film, it is too early to talk about it " said the actor.

Sources from the unit however, confirmed, "Delhi Belly is a sex comedy. Imran's role in the film is going to surprise the audiences. Aamir is doing a cameo. And his character is going to be negative."

Swimming with the sharks

After playing a baddie in Kidnap, Imran Khan gets into the action groove again with a vengeance. He recently shot for an underwater action scene surrounded by sharks near Durban in South Africa for Soham Shah's Luck.

Imran, who hadn't done this before, had to undergo specialised scuba diving training for this scene. A source working on the film reveals, "Imran was quite geared up to meet the challenge of doing the scene. Soham asked him if he wanted to use a body double, but the actor was adamant on doing the scene himself. Even though the scene was shot in a controlled environment with authorised scuba experts, the sharks were moving very close to Imran."

The underwater scene with Imran and the sharks is one of the major highlights of the film. "It was important for the scene to be canned in a few takes. The temperature of the water was freezing and Imran had to constantly keep coming up to check his oxygen tank. After the scene was shot, the entire crew applauded Imran."

When contacted the producers confirmed the incident but refused to share details saying it was early to divulge details.

Akshay Kumar has been bonding big time with his Hollywood buddies on the sets of Sajid Nadiadwala’s Kambakht Ishq . Not only is he getting pally with ‘Superman Returns’ star Brandon Routh but is also having a blast working with Bond girl Denise Richards.

Akshay and Denise kept cracking jokes and often kept smiling while Amrita too looked extremely comfortable. She had worn a yellow outfit. It was definitely a treat for us as we got to see Denise and Akshay together!”

Kareena was however not a part of the scene.

Fashion to premiere in New York

"Fashion", Madhur Bhandarkar's film set in the glamorous but ruthless world of haute couture, is slated for its world premiere on October 24 during the week-long 5th South Asian International Film Festival (SAIFF) in New York.

Nandita Das' "Firaaq", also from India, is the opening night feature of the festival and Das starrer "Ramchand Pakistani" directed by Mehreen Jabbar is the closing film. The festival runs from October 22-28.

SAIFF 2008 will present a select combination of full-length films, shorts and documentaries in a variety of genres. With several screening locations in Manhattan and high-profile sponsors like HBO, the New York Times and Time Warner Cable, the festival is dedicated to supporting established and emerging filmmakers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, as well as the South Asian diaspora.

"Fashion", starring Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut and Raj Babbar explores the world of style through the emotional journeys of the key people that make up the industry -models, designers, photographers, agencies and businessmen.

"Firaaq", which premiered last month at the Toronto International Film Festival, takes place over a 24-hour period one month after the 2002 communal violence in Gujarat. It features a star studded ensemble portraying the emotional journeys of "ordinary people" - some victims, some perpetrators and some who watched silently.

"Ramchand Pakistani" is a true story from 2002 concerning the accidental crossing of the Pakistan-Indian border during a period of extreme, war-like tension between the two countries by two members of a Pakistani Hindu family belonging to the Dalit caste. Nandita Das is the only non-Pakistani in the film's cast.

Akshay Kumar replaces Big B in Komagata Maru

After saying 'No' to Big B, Oscar nominated director Deepa Mehta has signed Akshay Kumar to play the lead in her next film, Komagata Maru.

It was earlier reported in the media that Big B couldn't do the film since it is a Canadian Production and their government expects the actors to have a Canadian citizenship. The film has therefore gone to Akshay Kumar.

Komagata Maru is an epic film based on a true story surrounding the voyage of the ship 'Komagata Maru' from India to Vancouver in the early part of the last century with 376 passengers on board seeking a new life in the promise land.

It is a film of high level government intrigue, duplicity, racism, spying, military engagements, court battles, sedition, and assassination.

It is a journey of one man's courage that challenged the largest empire in the world. Set in the year 1914, the film spans two continents. It bears open the heroism of Gurdit Singh, who dares to have an impossible dream- a life of freedom, equality, and dignity.

The film also depicts the martyrdom of Mewa Singh.

Akshay Kumar has confirmed he will be playing the lead Gurdit Singh, in this collaboration with Deepa Mehta. Talks are also underway with various actors including Hollywood A-listers making this truly an international project.

"This is an extremely important opportunity for me to reveal a significant moment in Canadian history and illustrate the steadfast bravery of the Sikh community who sacrificed so much to help create a more tolerant community within my adopted country, " says award winning director, Deepa Mehta.

Akshay Kumar says, "I'm not used to working with the Oscar nominated directors so it is a great privilege to work with Deepa Mehta.

The subject of this film has moved me, as it is a true representation and a testimony to human struggles for freedom, justice and equality. I want to portray this real life tragedy to the world identifying how injustice was done to innocent people.

It is an hour for me to play one of the bravest Sikhs, Gurdit Singh, in this tragic forgotten moment in history. I salute those brave souls who sacrificed their lives for justice and equality today."

Komagata Maru is a Canadian production being produced by Hamilton-Mehta Production Inc. in association with Akshay Kumar's home production, Hari Om Entertainment.

The film's budget ranges from $ 30-35 million dollars approximate and is currently in pre-production. It will begin full production in September 2009.

The story will be filmed in various locations around the world. The film will be distributed in Canada by Mongrel Media.

In Heroes we don't bad mouth Pakistan: Preity Zinta

After almost a gap of one and half years Preity is back with a more mature outlook towards life. And that can be made out in her forthcoming films. Currently her three films are due for release, let's talk to her and know more about them.

Q-It's almost after one and half years that your three films are going to be released?
A-Yes, alongwith Heroes there are two more films that are going to be released. After Heroes which is releasing in Diwali it's going to be Deepa Mehta's "Heaven and Earth"and then Jaanu Barua's "Har Pal" will be released.

In all these films Heroes and Har Pal are completely commercial films but Heaven and Earth is a realistic film. Its based on household violence. In both the films Heroes and in Heaven and Earth I'm playing the role of a Punjabi girl.

The characters that I'm playing in both these films are different forms of women. It's chirpy and bubbly in one while serious and stronger in the other.

The character of Har Pal is something very different from what I have played till now. It reminded me of Kya Kehna.

Q-What is the specialty of these three films?
A-The specialty about these films would be that they will have a place in my personal film library. I'm really proud about these films as in them I have challenged the actor inside me.

Moreover in this era of only commercial films these films are a good combination of reality and commercial and I list them with Taare Zammen Par, Rang de Basanti, Wednesday and Munna Bhai.

And also the best part about Heroes is that in spite of being an army based film it has not bad mouthed Pakistan in any way.

Q-What would you like to say about Deepa Mehta?
A-What do I say about her, she is one of the finest directors in the world. I always thought about her as a director who could never go wrong. This was proved at Toronto after the screening of our film Heaven and Earth when the entire crowd there gave a standing ovation.

Q-In all the three films you are playing the role of a typical Indian girl, which of these is the real you?
A-Amongst the three, Kuljeet of Heroes is very close coz she is shown patriotic just, like me. But I feel just by saying any one of these characters resemble me would be unfair. More than my characters I trust these films.

Q-That means you are sure to win the national award this year?
A- (laughing) I don't know. I would want the viewers to be my award. I would like them to go and watch these films. And I would personally request every man and women to definitely watch Deepa Mehta's Heaven and Earth.

Q-Its heard that in Heroes al the heroines are sidelined, is it true?
A- Absolutely not, there is nothing like this. These are all personal views of the media. They have a habit of hyping the smallest of issues.

I would like to appreciate them as they have managed to hit the bull's eye once again. Just like Veer Zaara was Shah Rukh and Preity's film and in every poster the two of them were seen, in the same way in this film also the heroine plays a very strong character. but Heroes is actually as the name suggests a film basically on the heroes.

Q-After almost one and half year you were to be seen in "last Lear" and now in all your forthcoming films you are seem to be excited about doing all different characters. Why at this time?
A-what do you mean?

Q-I meant that were you offered such roles or you had decided that you want to do something different?
A-Yes, I had decided I wanted to do something different. because of this decision I also refused a lot of big banners which I don't want to mention now.

Whereas media had already started spreading the news that Preity is not getting any good offers and that she is planning to get married. The fact was that I had taken a one year time off from my directors for the IPL as I dint want to discuss things before they could work out.

In midst of all this I always thought in my heart that I wanted to do something different that would inspire me. Lot of my friends were annoyed and said that I was really crazy to do something like this.

Q-But why did you decide to do something like this?
A-Every single person asked me the same question at that time. And I answered all of them by saying that even if I fail in my expectations I would like to give myself a chance. No one would be held responsible for my failure.

Everytime when someone would come up to me with a offer I would instantly agree thinking that the film sounds great, the banner is big the money is good, It was as if someone is controlling me with a remote control. This was not what my heart wanted.

When I took an off for IPL I felt that these are some signals from God, coz the day I decided to do something different I got a call from Deepa Mehta asking me for Heaven and Earth.

Q-Haven't Deepa Mehta and Rituparna Ghosh offered you any roles before?
A-Of course they had offered me. Even when I was doing hard core commercial films I did get offers from big directors for such roles.

At that time I had told them that I want to be completely dedicated to what I'm doing, if im unable to give my hundred percent to the film then that would be a minus point for the film.

Q-Why did you do a cameo role in Mr. and Mrs. Khanna and Rab ne Bana di Jodi?
A-As far as Mr. and Mrs. Khanna is concerned the director of the film is a very close friend of mine and he always wanted me to work with him. But I was so obsessed with these three forthcoming films of mine that I refused him.

Now when he came up to me with this small role I couldn't refuse him. For Rab ne Bana di jodi I wouldn't like to comment on that film.

Oh My God! Salman…you look so good: Preity Zinta

Preity, with your next film Heroes coming up. Are you nervous or excited?
Frankly speaking, I am very excited. I was nervous when I was shooting for the film. It was a very difficult role for me, because it was not in my comfort zone as an actor. This role was something that I have not attempted before.

For instance, when someone offers me a role of an NRI, I can play that role with ease because it's in my comfort zone. But my role in Heroes has got a very rural flavor to it.

It's a role of a simple girl from a village, who speaks Punjabi and is a woman of the soil. She works on a tractor and makes rotis in a village house. In that sense, it's a very different kind of role.

What is the name of your character in the film and can you oblige us by giving a sneak peak into the lives of 'Heroes'?
The name of my character is Kuljeet Kaur, who is an Indian by every inch. And as far as the 'sneak peak' into the film is concerned, all I can say is that the film is about the two boys played by Vatsal Seth and Sohail Khan.

They belong to the proverbial 'Generation Next' and also someone who have everything that anyone can ever want. They have the money to splurge, they have all the vices, and they have the time, and yes the luxury to waste time too, which is pretty much the current breed of the upper level generation.

Heroes is about their journey of meeting people from various backgrounds of life. It is their interaction with people from various backgrounds of life. Moreover, how they get inspired from them. It is then, that these normal people become 'heroes'.

The bottom line of the story is that one need not do anything extraordinary to become a hero. You can simply do the ordinary things and become a hero. But what matters the most is the 'way' you do them.

As Mariah Carey says in her famous song… 'That a Hero lies in you'. This film is also something that acts as a bridge that connects the modern India with the real India.

How much of your character in Heroes do you identify with?
Absolutely…despite the fact that I am extremely urban! But as Shahrukh says, 'Phir bhi dil hai Hinduatani'! I come from an army family (with my father and brother both serving the nation), I am extremely patriotic towards my country.

I would request each and every family to at least send one of their children to the army. That way, it would not be states and communities anymore…it will be about INDIA! People in the army give their lives for people they don't even know. The only time when we remember them is when there is a war happening.

At the end of the day, we land up with a 'Oh! How sad' kind of feeling, which is something that I feel will never cease to be the flavor of the season. Heroes is a look into lot of such things, without any kind of theory and lecture-baazi!

It's more of a practical presentation which, in other words, can also be termed as the mirror of the society! It's not just me, but the whole nation will instantly identify with Kuljeet Kaur! As an actor, Heroes is a very new space for me and I am simply proud to be a part of it!

Rumors also have it that you have not used make up in the entire film. How much of it is true?
Yes, I have not used make-up, but only in some portions of the film, whereas in others, I have. But the one film in which I have just not done any make up is my next film Heaven On Earth! To me, Heaven On Earth and Heroes are the two faces of the same coin.

How was it working with Salman Khan?
Till date, never ever in my career, have I ever looked at my hero while working with him, stopped at the sets and said, "Oh! You look so good!" But, I did that with Salman Khan when he came dressed up as a Sardar. I just looked at him and said, "Oh My God! Salman…you look so good!"

Salman, on his part, simply looked at me so endearingly and asked, "Preity…what are you talking about!" With his beard and turban, he looked like a real Jat Sikh! Trust me; he looks so very awesomely good in the film.

As a matter of fact, I happened to go to London where a group of people came up to me and said, "Assi tho zaroor dekhaangey jee Heroes, Salman Khan tho badda sona lagada hain jee." (Dear, we will surely watch Heroes without fail. Salman looks so good in it!).

And I was like, 'Hey! What about me?' (Laughs) To which, they replied, "Aap bhi achhe lag rahe ho, par Salman kya lag raha hai…gabru'. (You too are looking good, but Salman looks so macho!).

Heroes was previously titled as 'Mera Bhaarat Mahaan'. Without sounding diplomatic or politically correct, can you please tell us as to which name do you prefer more and why?
I think both the titles work for me because the idea being both the titles suits the film so very accurately.

That reminds me of an incident, which happened to me a few days back when I saw a signboard which said 'Mera Bhaarat Mahaan'.

But when I came closer to the board, there were these small letters below it which said 'Banana padega'. (Laughs) If I were to think of Heroes from a different context, I think that Mera Bharat Mahaan sounds like a name with a little bit of cynicism in it, while Heroes sounds more positive. That way, I would stick with Heroes!

Vatsal Seth…the literal blue-eyed boy of Bollywood, who started off his Bollywood career with a dud like Tarzan -The Wonder Car is again knocking the doors of tinsel town with Heroes. Do you foresee a bright future for him post Heroes?
I am sure that he indeed has a bright future ahead of him. And when he actually starts looking like a man (post his chocolate hero image), he would have gained so much experience in this industry, that its going to be only raining awards for him!

India winning at the Oscars is every Indian's dream. So, do you feel that Taare Zameen Par will make every Indian's dream come true?
I really hope it wins! It's a great movie. After watching the film, I told Aamir that, 'TZP made me cry. And it wasn't even a love story.' I am already sitting with my fingers and toes crossed with a little prayer of my lips!

Can you cite three reasons for the common man to watch Heroes?
Firstly, it's a fantastic film. Secondly, I am in it. And lastly, it's going to be worth every minute of it.

Kangana gets cosy with her boyfriend

From the beginning of her career Kangana Ranaut has seemed to be comfortable with exposing, steamy scenes and playing troubled characters.

In all her films from 'Gangster', 'Woh Lamhe', 'Shaka Laka Boom Boom' to 'Life in a Metro' (and the upcoming 'Fashion'), she's repeatedly done things of that kind!

This time it's being said that her lovemaking scene in 'Raaz 2' gets steamier than ever.

That's quite natural. The guy with whom she's filmed it is none other than Adhyayan Suman, her real-life boyfriend.

Yes, Kangana has been seeing him after she walked out of her long term relationship with Aditya Panscholi and was 'done using him' (as accused by the jilted Panscholi)!

Reportedly Kangana and Adhyayan play a madly-in-love couple in the Vishesh Films' movie. Since the two are shown to be a live-in couple in the film, director Mohit Suri thought of shoot a lovemaking scene between them. The scene required the two actors to get cozy and even share a passionate kiss.

As expected the real life lovers were game for it. The buzz is that everything was very spontaneous and they didn't even rehearse before shooting the scene.

With an expert like Kangana around, it must have been very simple indeed!

You can't have a sex bomb image forever

Three years and nine films later, Tanushree Dutta has moved on. She no longer worries about the kind of perception audience has about her and the variety of roles they want her to be seen in. Instead she wants to focus on different kind of projects that she can lay her hands on and wear different personalities for each of her roles.

"Just like in life you can't have the same mood everyday, the same holds good in your professional career as well.

You can't be trapped in the image of a sex bomb forever or shy away from doing different kind of films. I can't be the same girl from morning till night and the same holds good for my films too which should be boasting of different flavors", philosophizes Tanushree Dutta.

Stating that she can't be playing monotone characters for life, Tanushree declares that she has grown in life. "I am not a kid anymore to be affected by talks around me.

Anything that is extreme, whether overtly negative or highly positive, ceases to disturb the way I look at life or my work. I know of the people who love me and the supporters that I have. I don't have a point to prove to anyone out there."

Her latest release 'Saas Bahu Aur Sensex' saw her in a different avtar altogether. From the bombshell image that she carries, suddenly she appeared as a girl next door.

"Well, it may be a little disappointing for few but again as I said earlier, those who love me would understand this.

For others, well I can only be sorry for them but please, don't expect me to be the same all the time", smiles Tanushree who would also be seen in a children's adventure film 'Raama - The Saviour' soon.

"That's one film I am excited about since I have learnt martial arts for the film. 'Raama - The Saviour'.

The film boasts of stunts on the lines of Lara Croft played by Angeline Jolie in 'The Tomb Raiders series' and has state-of-the-art special effects and animation. It was fun shooting for the film which has been shot in the jungles of Thailand", signs off Tanushree.

Producer Sajid Nadiadwala has hit it off so well with Sylvester Stallone while shooting for "Kambakht Ishq" that he has convinced the "Rocky" star to attend the premiere of the film here as well as to work together in more movies.

"Yes, Stallone will be coming to Mumbai for the premiere. In fact, we have hit it off so well that I've convinced him for more collaborations with us," Nadiadwala told IANS.

"However, it's too premature to talk about any concrete plans between the two of us. He did give me a book to read, but that doesn't mean I'm making a movie out of it, not yet."

The producer has huge plans for "Kambkaht Ishq". He plans to have an international release of the English version of the movie at the same time with the Hindi in April-May 2009.

"It'll be a much shorter version of the original. While the Hindi version will be around 130 minutes, the English version will be 90-100 minutes long and without any song."

Nadiadwala is working on the English version of "Kambakht Ishq". Though Akshay is all set to finally go international with his first English-language film, he won't be heard speaking in his own voice.

"I'll get dubbing artistes from outside India to dub for everyone, excluding Sylvester Stallone. Akshay certainly can't make himself comprehensible to American audiences in his own voice," said Nadiadwala from Vicenza in Italy, where the last portion of "Kambhakt Ishq" is being shot with Kareena, Akshay, Aftab Shivdasani and Amrita Arora.

To knock off the elaborate Hindi song sequences for the English version, Sajid is getting a creative music director from Hollywood as a consultant.

"We've zeroed in on three guys who specialise in editing Hollywood musicals including the gentleman who did 'The Wedding Singer'. I'll hire one of them to put together the English version of 'Kambhakt Ishq'. I don't want it to be seen as a dubbed Bollywood film. I want it to be on a par with the American releases, just as slick."

This is where the presence of Stallone, Denise Richards and "Entourage" star Holy Valencia would help.

"These stars would help bring in the American audience and establish a connect with the film. Like in India, most audiences won't care about Stallone and other Hollywood stars. They'll just go to watch Akshay."

Nadiadwala is hoping "Kambakht Ishq" would be the international launch of Akshay's career.

"He has it in him. And we've worked really hard to give 'Kambakht' an international look and feel. My film has gone way above budget. I don't think I'll ever be able to make a film so expensive. The ticket fare to Europe alone costs what was the entire budget of my first production."
