The idea for Phoonk came from India TV

Director Ram Gopal Varma says the idea of making his recently released horror film "Phoonk" came from the news channel India TV.

"The idea to make a film on black magic came from India TV. The channel keeps on showing various programmes on black magic. I watched various programmes on black magic and super natural powers on the channel and approached Azam Khan with the concept. He liked it and the whole script was written," Varma told reporters here.

Azam Khan's One More Thought Entertainment has produced the film.

Critics have panned the film, but "Phoonk" reportedly saw a good opening with 70 percent collection. Thanks to pre-release publicity, it has been successful in drawing a considerable chunk of audience in the multiplexes.

Varma celebrated the success of the the film here Monday.

Commenting on the box office yardstick to measure a film's success, Varma said: "I don't know what makes a film hit otherwise I wouldn't have made flops."

"'Phoonk' doesn't have any big stars, still it is a hit. This shows that concept film is now being accepted in India," said Varma.

The director said idea or concept based film, which is prevalent in the West, is slowly making its way among the Indian audience and the scenario is soon going to change.

"People in India identify a film by the presence of stars. Star system rules here, but 'Phoonk' has proved that even content and idea can give a hit. Content is the king in 'Phoonk'. "

Now, with its initial success, the makers are even planning a sequel to "Phoonk" that starred Sudeep, Amrita Khanvilkar, Ahsaas Channa, Ashwini Kalsekar, Kenny Desai, Jyothi Subhash and Zakir Hussain.

"We are planning a sequel to the film which will have a link from the point where it ended. Varma will be directing it and almost the entire cast will be repeated in the sequel titled 'Phoonk 2'," said Azam Khan.

Sherlyn is promoting nudity on my name

It is a known fact that the slick 'n scandalous "Dard-e-Sherlyn" video is Sherlyn Chopra's 'tribute' to the original Dream Girl, Hema Malini's hit number "Dard" from 'Dus Numbri'.

But in a recent interview in Delhi, Hema Malini has hit at Sherlyn with stinging sarcasm and said that the newbie is trying to gain mileage on her name, attaching nudity to it.

She said, "It's (the video) very hot, haan? My God, I don't even know why she's (Sherlyn's) linking me with a hot-hot thing. She's trying to change her image maybe with my name.

If she's doing this, poor thing, I wish her success, for all those who see nudity will be happy. But my name is Hema Malini and that won't change for anything."

When quizzed, Sherlyn's publicist Dale Bhagwagar said, "I've known Hemaji as a wonderful person, and if she says Sherlyn is promoting nudity on her name, I dare not contest her opinion.

After all, the video did receive 19 cuts from the Censor Board. If Sherlyn has a diva-like image, she can't help it. You can't ask a Madonna to be like an Alka Yagnik, can you?"

He explains, "See, Sherlyn made this video as a 'tribute' to Hemaji's "Dard". Hemaji ki 'Dus Numbri' 1976 mein release hui thi. Unka dard uss zamaane ka tha. Sherlyn ka dard iss zamaane ka hai, jo ki har naujawan ko hota hai. Hum sab jaante hain ki yeh dard thoda sa emotional hota hai, aur thoda sa sexual bhi."

As of now, Sherlyn's "Dard" has emerged a big hit, but the influential Hema Malini sure seems to be furious and upset. God bless Sherlyn.

Tanisha Mukherjee does an item number

From playing the female lead in Neil And Nikki to doing cameos in Sarkar and Sarkar Raj, now Tanisha Mukherjee is resorting to item numbers. By the looks of it, Kajol’s little sister’s career graph is taking the downward slope. We recently caught with Tanisha on the sets of Milo To Sahi where she was shooting for an item song with Suniel Shetty and Vidya Malavade. According to her, if Shah Rukh Khan can do it, then so can she. She says, “I think item songs are a trend now. Moreover, if my friend wants me to do an item number for his film, then why not?”

Performing on a sizzling salsa number, Tanisha looked quite at ease. However, who looked slightly off-key was Suniel. He said, “There is too much pressure. There is tension as there are so many cameras around and I have to dance in front of them. Dancing is not my asset. I am just managing somehow. The girls are good dancers. So I think it will get balanced.”

In the film Vidya plays Suniel’s wife. Talking about the item number, Anna says, “I am in a club with my friends. When one of them challenges me saying I have changed after marriage, I lose my mind and go for the girl.” That’s very unlike the Suniel in real life. He says, “In this industry, there is a very thin line. The girls are gorgeous. But, you need to remember that you are married and have a daughter. It’s just not worth crossing the line.”

Isha Koppikar into the depth of her character

Things at Bollywood have not been just too encouraging for the ‘Khallas’ girl Isha Koppikar, but that doesn’t stop the girl from working hard enough to get to her goals.

So, involved and determined is Isha to get the realistic touch for her upcoming RGV’s ‘Shabri’ that she is leaving no stones unturned in getting into the skin of the character.

To look like a slum girl, Isha didn’t wax her body, didn’t pluck eyebrows, didn’t use any beauty products and, in fact, did not even comb her hair. But this is not all. During one shoot in a slum area of Mumbai, while the evening snacks were served, Isha, unmindfully, instead of going to her make-up van to eat, sat near a dustbin to eat like a street beggars. It was only when her make-up boy came and said ‘Didi, aap yaahan kyun baithi hain? Make up van mein chaliye,’ that she realized where she was sitting.

‘I was so engrossed in my character that I didn’t even realize what I was doing. If my make-up boy hadn’t made me realize that I was sitting beside a dustbin I would have had my snacks there,’ says Isha.

Isha has changed her walking style and has lost weight too. What we wonder is how long will she take to get to normal life once she is out of the character?

Shilpa's effigies burnt

Only few days passed and Bigg Boss has started hitting the headlines. First it was the traumatic adieu of British candidate Jade Goody and secondly allegations on the host Shilpa Shetty by Rakhi Sawant. Shilpa was stunned when Rakhi accused her of changing candidates. She was deeply hurt when her effigies were burnt in front of the Bigg Boss house on the basis of selection and rejection of candidates. A guy Ramdas Atahavle claimed that being a dalit, he was dropped by Shilpa

On hearing the false allegations, the actress doesn't know how to react. "It's the channel's prerogative to select or reject a candidate. Until two days prior to the show I didn't even know who was going. The format doesn't allow the host to know the contestants. Mr Athavle claims he was dropped on discriminatory grounds because he was a Dalit and Sanjay Nirupam was taken instead."

When questioned about Rakhi's allegation, Shilpa says she's appalled. "I don't even want to talk about her. But I was very hurt. I really like Rakhi. Why was she talking this way about me without knowing the facts? How does she know the facts about how contestants were chosen? I don't think it's right for anyone to shoot off her mouth in this way. You may have an outspoken image that you're always eager to uphold. But please don't flaunt that image at my cost."
