Gul Panag tears Mahesh Bhatt apart in public

High drama took place during the book reading session of Varon BK Sharma’s acclaimed novel Assasination of George Bush at Crossword’s Juhu branch. Actress Gul Panag, filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt and filmmaker cum activist Ashok Pandit engaged in a verbal duel which led to early wrapping up of the book reading session.

The high voltage book, Assassination of George Bush written by actor turned novelist, Varon BK Sharma has been fast gaining popularity and to celebrate its success a book reading session was organized.

It saw a decent celebrity turnout of Bollywood town folks such as Mahesh Bhatt, Gul Panag, Shefali Shah, Ashok Pandit, Suchitra Pillai, Roza Catallano, Aman Verma and socialite Nisha Jamwal.

Since the celebrities present had already read the book, a healthy discussion began on its content and the issue of global Islamic terrorism it deals with.

One thing lead to another and when the topic came to why there are few Muslims in Indian army; a heated argument took place between Gul Panag and Mahesh Bhatt. Gul comes from an army background and she therefore put up her views more strongly.

Ashok Pandit too chipped in voicing his opinion on the topic. Mahesh Bhatt known for his command over such issues, for once appeared cornered. Soon their voices raised as their argument continued and it was all happening right in front of the present media and the guests present.

The Crossword store official sensing that the matter would go out of hand intervened and hurriedly announced the end of the event. Bhatt was seen leaving the venue in a huff post that.

When asked, Varon who has also written the critically acclaimed film directed by Subhash Ghai, Black and White, said, “I feel it was a healthy debate and nothing much should be read into that. The matters of the book are explosive so some sparks are bound to fly.”

Gul Panag to do a condom advert?

gul.jpg

Fiery actress Gul Panag loves meaningful cinema and would love to do some meaningful commercial with Aamir Khan.

She says, “I’ll certainly do a commercial with Aamir – even if it’s for something like condoms! And on the subject of condoms, people ought to learn to talk about condoms openly. The Censor Board needs to operate in a more rational manner.”

She adds. “On one hand, we have population control initiatives, and on the other, the Censor Board chops a scene in Hello for a dialogue that has the word ‘condom’ in it. Isn’t that illogical?”

You are right baby!

Dil ki ghanti kab baj jaaye, kisi ko nahin pata: Gul Panag

Q.Your man’s must-have qualities?
A.He should know what I want without me having to say it.

Q.Can your friendship for him blossom into love?
A.Yes, why not, it can happen that the person, who I may have always thought to be just a buddy, may suddenly become someone I love. Dil ki ghanti kab baj jaaye, kisi ko nahin pata.

Q. If he is among current Bollywood hunks, he would be like...
A.Most girls would love to choose Hrithik (even though he is happily married) as he is the ‘take home and show mom’ type of guy. If I wanted somebody more interesting, then it would have to be Bachchan Junior.

Q.Is changing partners okay with you?
A.It’s normal, one does grow out of love. Today, I may like A, tomorrow B may come along and in that situation if I still stick to A, then I would be doing injustice to him, for though I will be with him, my heart will be with the other guy.

Q.If other girls make a pass at your man...
A.I would feel jealous and ask those chicks to stay away from my guy. I will not give the PC answer that I am happy that my guy is being appreciated.

Q.His metrosexuality?
A.I bet metrosexual men are vainer than women. They spend more time in front of the mirror than their women. Some men have houses full of mirrors, where they keep checking their profile. On the whole, I like a metrosexual man for there is competition right at home ? on who looks better.

Q.Is an approval from your parents for him a must?
A.Yes, I would prefer a love marriage which is arranged by them. If my parents don’t like my guy, I would try to convince them lovingly. It would be totally wrong to dump my folks who have brought me up.

Q.He should take you out on a romantic evening to...?
A.A beautiful sea-facing restaurant for an expensive candlelight dinner under the stars.

What's wrong in asking for a Condom: Gul Panag

Maybe that's why they call Bollywood as the other name for 'unexpectedness'.

It's kind of strange that on one hand, there are zillions of ads on radio and TV that advocate (in their own creative ways) the importance of using a condom.

But, on the other hand, there is our Censor Board which has ordered the chopping of a scene from the forthcoming film Hello that has actress Gul Panag mouthing the usage of 'condom'.

The scene in question has Gul asking Sharman Joshi (to whom she is paired opposite) whether he is carrying a condom before they have sex.

The deletion of the 'condom' word from the scene has angered Gul to no end, so much so that she is now planning to write a letter to the Censor officials about this absurd decision on their part.

Gul argues that since the scene required her and Sharman to make love, she, like any educated woman asks if he is carrying a condom, before they get on with the act.

Gul finds it funny that even though the lovemaking scene is retained, the word 'condom' has been chopped off from the dialogue. She also added that this decision only exhibits the double standards of the Censor Board.

I can even look good in a bikini: Gul Panag

Former Miss India Gul Panag, mostly seen in de-glamorised acting roles, recently caught public attention by posing in a black lingerie for the cover page of Maxim, a magazine for men. Gul said she did it to show off the "glamorous and real side" of her personality.

"It was not for a change in my image. I am very happy to have the image that I have. I am associated with a certain type of work and I don't want to change that ever. But what is important is that people should understand that what they see on screen and what I am are two different persons, " Gul told.

Gul has received critical acclaim for playing offbeat roles in films like "Dor" and "Manorama Six Feet Under", in which she was seen mostly in Indian attire.

"In reality, I am not that kind of person as shown in most of my films. I am not a village girl clad in 'saris' and 'salwar-kameez' in real life. I am a regular modern girl who is glamorous in real life and that's what I wanted to show. In fact, nobody has ever seen me in 'saris' and 'salwar-kameez' in real life, " said Gul who debuted with Parth Arora's "Dhoop" in 2003.

"I can look good in a bikini or any other sexy outfit or equally convincing in a nightie. That's the job of an actor, " she added.

Commenting upon her roles, she said: "I believe that I'm extremely versatile as I can do power packed performances as well as look good as and when required. I don't want the people to be confused that the role that I have been playing in my films is what I am in real life. It's just the man who is playing the villain in films is not bad in real life."

What made you say yes to Maxim?

"Why not? It's the highest selling men's magazine in the world, " she said.

Asked about her future plans, she said: "It's not that I'll be doing more glamorous or power packed roles. It's about the offers. Glamour cannot be substance to a role. However, in most of my forthcoming films, I have glamorous roles.

"In 'Hello' I am glamorous. I have two more films - 'Straight' and 'Hello Darling' - in which too I have glamorous roles."

The actress said she is playing a modern, urban young woman in "Hello".

"My character is neither black nor white. It has a huge amount of grey in her. In the story, she is stuck in a conflict in choosing between love and practicality."

Based on novelist Chetan Bhagat's "One Night At The Call Centre" also stars Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif, Sohail Khan, Isha Koppikar, Sharman Joshi, Amrita Arora and Arbaaz Khan.

Gul said she liked the story and her role in particular. "I never sign a film unless and until I am convinced with the story. In this case, I knew the story beforehand because I had read the book earlier. It is an extremely interesting story and I hope people will like me in the role."

Gul said she enjoyed most working for "Manorama Six Feet Under".

"It is closest to my heart and I enjoyed working in it the most."

Among the newcomers, Gul finds Imran Khan as most dynamic and wants to work with him.

"I think Imran is extremely talented and the most promising among the newcomers. I came to meet Imran for a short while during an audition where we interacted and I found him a highly sensible and dynamic actor. If given a choice among the newcomers, I would definitely choose him, " she said.

Why everyone is so concerned about my skin show: Gul Panag

Gul, the beautiful dimple, was seen last in Summer 2007, though for a little while as the film didn’t work well at the box office. Now the babe is ready to knock at the theatre doors with her three upcoming projects. Here is a scrap of conversation between Rajnee Gupta and the versatile actress…

Q. Please tell us about your character in Hello...
A. I play Priyanka – a girl who is very glam, and aware of the power of her good looks. She has shades of grey that makes her very real and relatable.

Q. The film is based on a novel. How did you feel giving life to such a character especially while you know that people know about the character?
A. I tried to play the character with utmost honestly and sincerity. I also had lots of discussions with Chetan Bhagat about playing Priyanka. Lastly, I left myself completely in the hands of Atul.

Q. Have you ever read the book?
A. Three times before meeting Atul for the first time. Twice again while filming.

Q. Atul Agnihotri as a director... tell about a good thing and a bad thing...
A. He is a very gentle person, and finds it difficult to be tough with people, which I suppose could be a bad thing. And because he's been an actor, he's fabulous with actors, which is a great thing.

Q. How was the experience of working with actors, especially Isha? You are doing Hello Darling with her and it's because of her that the shoot got delayed all the time...
A. Eesha is extremely talented and hardworking. I got along well with her during Hello and got even closer during Hello Darling. Shoot's get delayed for lots of reasons, but I can assure you not on account of her. She is too professional for that.

Q. Salman and Katrina are also there in this flick. Do you have any scene with them?
A. No. I shot the promo song with Salman, though, and it was a great experience.

Q. Summer 2007 flopped. What do you expect from this film?
A. So? So did many other big films. One can't stop being part of good cinema on the basis of their box office future. As for this film, it is a good film and very well made. Expectations? I never think about things that are out of my control! When a good film does well it shows that the audience has good taste.

Q. You entered Bollywood from a glamour world of beauty contest but accepted non-glamorous roles. Then after all these years suddenly you got entangled in a controversy of skin showing. Do you intend to change your image with that or have some other intention?
A. I am fortunate that I have the image of a "good" and "credible" actor. And I would not want to change that. Actors take years trying to get that.

As for glamour or the lack of it, I have to say it's a complete non issue for me when choosing my roles. And just because I've done de glam roles in the past doesn't make Gul, the person, de glam. I am what I am – someone who is versatile enough to be able to carry off everything.

And about controversy, I am not aware of any!! And skin show?? Please!! When have I ever been the demure one in a sari or salwar kameez off screen??

Not more than a few times and that, too, for maintaining the sanctity of an occasion. I have always dressed in my own way –whether it's short dresses or deep necks there's nothing new or different and certainly no 'intention'.

Q. Your forthcoming projects...
A. Right now I am engaged to three projects, namely Hello, Hello Darling and Straight. In Hello I am working with Sohail Khan, Sharman Joshi, Ishaa Kopikar, Amrita Arora and Sharod Saxena.

In Straight you can watch me with Vinay Pathak and in Hello Darling I am screened with Celina Jaitly, Ishaa Kopikar, Javed Jaffrey and Chunky Pandey.

I have always done things my own way - Gul Panag

Lo and behold - Gul Panag has gone chic and how! Though in real life she has been a bindaas woman all these years in spite of being a part of so-called serious films like Dhoop, Dor and Manorma- Six Feet Under, on print she has rarely gone the whole hog in projecting a sensual image.

However, she has gone ahead and done what is hardly-unthinkable for her by getting into a dare-bare shoot for Maxim.

"I have always done things my own way and it was irresistible when the magazine approached me to get down to my night suit. Did I feel awkward about doing so? Nope, not at all. What's there at all to feel awkward about?

I have never felt odd driving an Enfield or a F1 car for Renault or picking up the kind of projects I believe in. It was the same in case of this shoot as well.

I was promised a lot of fun and though some may be getting shocked with my dare-bare poses, my message to them is that 'Hey you there, I am like that only'", says Gul in a rapid tone while being mighty excited about the kind of response that her shoot is fetching for her.

Says Anup Kutty from Maxim, "A very simple reason for putting Gul on the cover is the fact that she's stunningly beautiful. Plus, she occupies a space in Indian cinema that not many share.

She has done some critically acclaimed roles and still can carry off a "sexy" look with complete ease. In short, she's a real woman of substance and probably the best thing that could happen to a man! The shoot in itself was a lot of fun."

How did the shoot go?

Reveals Anup, "We booked a suite at the Le Meridien and ordered a bottle of champagne to go with it. More than anything, it was just one big party!"

Gul agrees, "Yes, it was indeed one huge party out there. It was nice to be working with some real chilled out guys who belong to your own age group.

I got such a comfort feel while working on the assignment and the results are there to be seen. Believe me, I truly felt beautiful as the shutter bags went on."

I'm open to doing anything: Gul Panag

While even small names in the B-town feel like staying in their own cocoon and prefer to come roles to their ways, Gul Panag is the name who, despite having critically acclaimed roles in her wallet, doesn’t look at her professional life in that way.

All set to think positive, the beau believes that work cannot come her way walking all the way from the director’s desk. “I cannot sit home and expect work to walk to my door step.

It is possible that there is a great role out there and probably the director hasn't thought of me. So I have no problem approaching directors and auditioning for roles, ” explains the dimpled diva.

But it’s not the end of her positive approach towards her profession. She thinks that she should not think about what kind of roles she is offered with as it’s a matter of her job and directors should think of it better.

“I am open to doing anything. I am an actor. It's an actor's duty to do as the script demands, ” Gul opens her heart. Besides, she is not afraid of going to any extent for her character.

So, the next time you see your dear Summer 2007 girl slipping her robe from her silky shoulder, don’t even think of dropping your jaws in surprise as she will still has no problem retaining her charm and dignity for every frame. Believe me.
