Asin is open to doing Tamil films

After the "Ghajini" success, southern actress Asin Thottumkal is concentrating on Bollywood films but says she won't mind doing Tamil movies if she gets a challenging role to play.

"I would start shooting on the same day when someone will narrate a challenging and substantial script to me," said Asin, who also featured in the Tamil version of "Ghajini", in Chennai on Tuesday at the press meet.

The actress, who is the brand ambassador of Tata-Sky DTH, was in town to honour the winner of an on-line game competition conducted by the company.

Asin said she too uses Tata-Sky DTH at her home in Mumbai. With several Bollywood projects in hand, Asin moved base to Mumbai from Chennai.

She was recently in the news for allegedly torturing her maid Beulah.

When asked about it, she said: "Life is not always stereotypical, you know. At times, you are faced with events that may not be entirely to your liking. One has to learn to take things in your stride. As long as one doesn't commit mistakes, he or she needn't fear anyone."

Her next Hindi film will be "London Dreams" in which she has teamed up with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan.

I & Deepika are SMS buddies: Asin

So, is this a homecoming of sorts? “I have missed Chennai a lot!” pipes the sparkling young lady, “ I’m here for only half a day, so there’ll be hardly any time to meet up with friends. Chennaiites are among the warmest people.”

But many believe she will not do Tamil films anymore. “Living in Mumbai doesn’t mean I won’t do films in other languages,” says Asin. “I am very open to doing a masala movie. But my role will have to be meaty.” And while on that topic, which one did she like better; Ghajini in Tamil or Hindi? “I preferred the romance in the Tamil Ghajini and the action in the Hindi version. But as for my character- Kalpana, I found no difference,” she states.

If her spirited performance as Kalpana got her wide recognition, it was Dasavatharam with Kamal Haasan that announced that Asin was indeed destined for bigger things. And now, in her new movie The 19th Step, she is back to work with him again. How does she feel? “I’m looking forward to working with him again! This time though, he won’t play my love interest (he plays her guru in the movie). Last time, when we were supposed to be a romantic pair, we spent most of our on-screen time bickering!” Her romantic partner in this film is Tadanobu Asano, the superstar from Japan. “I hear he is the Brad Pitt of Japan. I will be doing a photo shoot with him soon,” reveals Asin with a childlike glee. She is training rigorously in Kalaripayattu for the movie, and chirps, “Kalari has been a beautiful experience. It feels good to come back to the roots of my home state.”

How true are the rumours that she has signed up a Priyadarsan movie with Abhishek Bachchan and one Murgadoss movie with SRK. “I never discuss projects before they are formally announced,” she says guardedly. As for London Dreams, all she has to say is, “It will release once the multiplex issue gets sorted out.”

Will she ever move back to Chennai? “I live in Mumbai now because most of my work happens there. If I start shooting in Chennai, I will definitely come back.” So, is itMumbai Indians or Chennai Super kings for her? “Chennai Super kings!” she says at once.
So, how does she unwind? “ I am in that phase of life, where work is pleasure. But when I need to relax, I like going out for meals with my friends. Or else, I curl up with a book. My Harrington Road home in Chennai used to be a popular hang out for my friends,” she says.
Asin says of her friends in Chennai, “I’m very good friends with Geetha (actor Vijay’s wife, Sangeetha), and I keep in touch with Vijay, Suriya and Jo, Shoba aunty and SAC sir. I’m the first one to wish them on their special days.” And it is her tech savvy nature that has made her thick ‘SMS buddies’ with fellow actress Deepika Padukone. But, things haven’t been all that friendly. Asin has had her share of “plain cheap, not vicious rumours”, as she puts it. How does she live with it? “In Mumbai, negative publicity is more rampant. I realise that this stems from insecurity; it is a part of the industry and I have made my peace with it,” she says coolly.

Being seen at several food guide launches, would she count herself a foodie? “Completely! I know that the food-actress relationship is an anathema, but it’s different for me. I adore Indian cuisine, and prawn curry is one of my faves.”

Would she ever consider lip-locking in her movies? She muses, “If it is some camera angle gimmick, where it is made to look like a kiss, it would be fine, but never a real lip-lock.”

As of now, Asin “would love nothing more than to work with Rajnikant and Amitabh Bachchan.” And on that happy note, she signs off.

Asin shifts into her own apartment

Asin Thottumkal is finally ready to live independently. She recently moved out of her parents’ Lokhandwala apartment and has shifted into her own house at Green Acres, which is in the same locality.

The actress permanently shifted base from Kerala to Mumbai once she made her mark in Bollywood with Ghajini after which she bagged films like London Dreams and The 19th Step among others.

A close friend of Asin said, “She has been house hunting since 2007. It took her two years to move out of her parents’ house. She decided to stay by herself the day she turned 21.”

Asin doesn’t plan to hire an interior designer. “She is busy doing up her new house as she is determined to design it just the way she likes it. Asin has decided to keep the interiors young and contemporary with minimal furniture as she doesn’t want too much clutter,” added the friend.

Asin said, “I had been looking for a house for a very long time. The back-to-back shooting and travel schedules kept me extremely busy. Finally, I have shifted into my own apartment and I am very happy with it.”

Incidentally, Sridevi and Tabu live in the same society.

Everyone knows how Salman is: Asin

Asin says she’s had great fun shooting for “London Dreams’. She calls it a one of a kind experience.

There were numerous pranks, rambling tongue twisters, mugging up of one liners and so on…

She says she has learnt some interesting new things and Salman and especially Ajay Devgan made it even more interesting.

She’s said, “Ajay used to come up with some funny one-liners and tongue twisters which I got to learn from him. It’s one of my best shooting experiences. But I am not in a position to judge but yes as costars I feel they all are fabulous to work with. Both are very different actors and different people.”

Ajay actually seems to have impressed the Southern dame quite a bit.

She’s added, “Everyone knows that Salman is very chilled out but for Ajay, I thought he is a very serious and reserved person. But he is a complete surprise package. He is a complete entertainment channel on the sets.

Ajay is a prankster and I wasn’t aware of that. He actually tried playing a prank on me but it didn’t work so Ajay now has to think of something tougher.”

After coping up with somber Aamir Khan and his perfectionist ways, this sure would like a vacation for Asin. Not bad at all.

Salman dumped Katrina for Asin? Asin denies...

There’s a bit of worry for gorgeous Katrina as the rumours doing the rounds is that Asin and Salman Khan’s off-screen chemistry is really working very well.

It’s been said that Asin’s room is full of Sallu’s poster so that she can see his face, the first thing in the morning. Not only this, recently a Mumbai based tabloid reported that Salman has gifted a flat to Asin in Mumbai suburbs, Lokhandwala, so that Asin could have a permanent residence in the city of Bollywood.

The duo is working in London Dreams and it seems that their closeness would surely be bringing horrible dreams to Kat baby. But again Sallu Mia is known for his generosity so it can be that it is his yet another generous gesture towards the southern star.

But the Ghajini girl rubbishes all the speculation. She says that it’s nothing more than a professional relationship. She has clearly said that Salman didn’t enter her room, as reported by the tabloids.

She said, ''No one has access to my room.''

She tried her best to clear the air about the Bollywood bad boy: ''I am working with Salman in a film. Nothing more or nothing less than that."

Asin beats Katrina once again

A girl from down south Tamil Nadu stepped into the glam-world of Bollywood alongside Mr. perfectionist Amir Khan in Ghajini.

It seems now the gorgeous lady is planning to hit all the biggies of Bollywood starting with the top three Khans of the tinsel town. Where she is starring opposite Bollywood’s bad boy Salman Khan in London Dreams, we have heard that she would also be seen opposite Badshah Shahrukh Khan, that too under the dream banner of Yash Raj Films.

Initially it was Bollywood diva Katrina Kaif, who was going to don this role but Salman’s dushmani with Shahrukh, earned Asin this flick. It’s not the first time and first girl friend of Sallu that our Badshah didn’t wanted to work with.

Previously SRK was not even interested in working with Ashwariya Rai in Chalte Chalte and it was Rani Mukherjee who benefited from this.

Well, all we can say is that the stars are shining bright for Asin and she should make the most of it as it’s said, “Make hay while the sun shines.”

"Salman knelt and proposed to me in front of the Eiffel Tower" - Asin

She's basking in well-deserved success after Ghajini. In between shooting a song for London Dreams and doing commercials, Asin, looking fresh as a daisy in casual tee and trousers, opens up in an exclusive chat

How is life post-Ghajini? You are flooded with endorsements now.
Life is pretty much the same. As for endorsements, I have been doing ads since the age of 14. So far, I have done around 50 ads including Parachute, BPL Mobile, Mirinda and Colgate. Most of the commercials you are seeing now have been signed much before Ghajini happened.

But didn't you sign Tata Sky after Ghajini and after Aamir Khan became its brand ambassador?
Not at all. My ads are already on in the South and they are planning to shoot another with Aamir soon.

Now that you have tasted success with both the Ghajini's, which is more special?
Both. I was excited when the Tamil film came about. I had done a few films till then but Ghajini was a huge success. It was the highest-watched regional film in that year (2005). A huge box-office success, it even caught Bollywood's attention. As for the Hindi version, when I was shooting for it, it was like watching a re-run of your film but I was equally enthused working in it. I have been told the film is the highest grosser ever in Hindi. Screen gave me the Most Promising Newcomer award and I got my first national recognition.

Do you get mobbed in Mumbai?
I think people in Mumbai are really cool. When they see me, they wave out or greet me with a Hi or a Hello. It feels nice. But when I was shooting for London Dreams in Chandigarh, I got a taste of North India. I had never been there before and though I stayed there only for a day I enjoyed it. The crowd was encouraging and kept calling out my name. If I didn't respond to Asin, they would resort to Kalpana (her name in Ghajini). I loved the food there, specially the aloo parathas.

Are you not afraid of putting on weight?
Not at all. I believe in eating healthy food. My mother is a doctor and she has always encouraged me to eat right and live a healthy life. Whenever I get time, I work-out and do cardio exercises. I am not interested in being a size zero.

Asin What difference do you find between the Mumbai and the South film industries?
The South industry has a lot more sense of punctuality. They start early and wrap up by a particular time. I am used to that and make it a point to be on time for a shoot or an event. People tell me I shouldn't be on time and that it's an 'in' thing to be fashionably late. In Ghajini, the entire unit was from the South, so in that sense there was no difference. London Dreams is the first complete Bollywood unit I am working with. Most of the film has been shot in London and Paris and it was a good experience. Each of us got a bound script, besides the shoot schedule including the sunrise, sunset, weather forecast, temperature, site -map of the location, reporting time etc. For the first time, I was introduced to the concept of ADs (assistant directors) with walkie-talkies on the sets of Ghajini. It was odd to hear them telling each other 'loading Kalpana on the set', 'walking Kalpana' etc.' I used to tell them I am not a thing to be adressed like that!

How did London Dreams come about?
It was when I was shooting for Ghajini that I got a call from Vipul Shah. I got a script narration, liked my role and agreed to be a part of it. It is a relationship-based musical film. I am looking forward to it.

What is your role like?
I play Priya, a London-based girl of Indian origin. She is part of a music band, which has Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan as the lead singers.

We've heard that you sport two distinct looks in the film.
Yes, Priya acts like a paawan (innocent) traditional South Indian girl at home in front of her parents wearing only chudidars and salwars. But when she steps out, she switches over to strappy, short outfits and hot pants, the kind a London girl wears. Unlike Kalpana of Ghajini who wore clothes picked up from the streets in Bandra, since she was shown to be a lower middle-class girl, Priya's outfits have been brought in London.

There were reports that you weren't happy with the outfits given by your designer in London Dreams.
There's not an iota of truth in that report. Ashley Rebello is the designer and I had no problems with him. In fact, I have never stated my preferences for any of my movies. The director decides the kind of look he wants and conveys it to the designer. If the director is not satisfied how can I be blamed?

Between Kalpana and Priya, who is closer to you?
Oh! That's difficult to say. But I think I identify with Priya more. I had fun shooting for the film as the two newcomers Ranvijay and Aditya are closer to my age. We are all part of a music band in the film but we became good friends in real life too. Ranvijay is cool and Aditya is sweet.

Asin What about your heroes, Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan?
Salman is chilled-out. I like his attitude. With him what you see is what you get. Ajay Devgan was a revelation. I thought he was this serious, reserved type of guy but he turned out to be quite a prankster. He's witty and is a complete entertainment on the sets. He used to come up with this tongue-twisters in Hindi like oont ki peeth oonchi, oonchi poonch oont ki. And I would retort with some of the old Hindi one-line tongue-twisters that I know.

So, did he play any pranks on you?
Yes, he tried, but it fell flat on his face. (Laughs) During a shoot in London, when I was sitting in my caravan, two guys who were around 7 feet tall and of African origin started yelling at me. They asked me to come out of the caravan and started banging on it. Something told me this couldn't be happening. After they were through I calmly asked them to get out. Then, I saw Vipul (Shah) and Ajay standing with a camera filming the entire scene! Vipul was disappointed that I hadn't given a single reaction.

Tell us about the scene where Salman proposes to you.
That picture of Salman kneeling and proposing in front of the Eiffel Tower was splashed everywhere. We were shooting a song in Paris near the De Luvre Museum. A wacky song, which goes Man ko adhik bhave saiyyas, dil taa taa thaiyaa, haaye re has Salman wooing me and at the end of the song he proposes to me. It was freezing in the nights with chilly winds. But the song is so funny, it was great shooting for it.

Ghajini's producer Madhu Mantena has said that he has cancelled the three-film contract with you because of your attitude?
Let me clarify that I never sign any contract deals with producers. So, there's no question of him cancelling it. In fact, the day the report came in the paper, he called me to tell me not to believe whatever has been written. I must say that compared to the media in the South, the press here cooks up stories without any clarifications. I have decided not to react to these reports.

You refused a Priyadarshan film co-starring Akshay Kumar. In fact, you haven't signed any Hindi films apart from London Dreams.
(Cuts in) I would love to work with Priyan, I have grown up on his films in Malayalam. And he has offered me films in the past too. I have refused them for different reasons. For me, the most important things are the script, my character, the director, the producer and co-artiste, in that order. I try for the best combination and I am lucky to have worked with the cream of the cream. I can afford to wait. I don't want to be repetitious in my roles.

It's being said that you are charging a high price of around a crore and a half.
Money is not a criteria. I don't have any financial pressures. I want to enjoy what I am doing.

Asin Like Bharatbala's 19 Steps?
Yes. It is a Walt Disney production to be made in Tamil and Japanese. It is about a Samurai warrior who comes to Kerala to learn Kalaripayattu, the mother of all martial arts. The film stars Tadanov Asano, a Hollywood Japanese actor. Kamal Hassan plays the male lead. I can't reveal much about the role as we haven't even started shooting for it. It is to be shot in Kerala and Japan. I will be leaving for Kerala soon to learn Kalaripayattu. I am a trained classical dancer but I need to learn the body language of a trained Kalari. However, it is quite risky and many are known to get seriously injured while training. My mother is very apprehensive and is asking if it's a must to learn it!

Are you doing any Malayalam film?
No. I was offered four films but I am not doing any.

Is it because you want to establish yourself in Bollywood now?
No. I am open to doing any film, language is not a barrier. But as I told you I can afford to wait for a good role.

But your competitors may race ahead..
I want to concentrate on my career and not look at what others are doing or not doing. I am raw in films, I have neither taken acting classes nor have I assisted directors. Whatever I have learnt is on-the-job. I was 14 years old studying in the ninth grade when people told me I had a photogenic face and should try modelling. One thing led to another and I made my film debut in a Malayalam film Narendran Magan. It did average business, but my second film Amma, Nana, O Tamila Ammayi in Telugu was a big hit and I made it.

Asin charged with aide's abuse

Family of a man employed with Bollywood actor Asin has alleged that he has gone 'missing' because of abuse by the actor. Asin has denied the charge.

"The concerned person N. Muthu Kumar has left my employment and we informed the police immediately. Other accusations are false," the actress said in a statement Thursday.
According to S. Vadivu, her son Kumar was employed with Asin for four years.

"I am worried as Asin's father Joseph said that Kumar was sacked after he joined the Mumbai underworld several days ago. While my search in Mumbai was fruitless, the facts do not add up because Kumar told me over phone sometime back that he was likely to quit after the actress abused him over his physical handicap," Vadivu told IANS.

Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Sangram Jangid said: "The issue is being blown out of proportion by a section of the press. The complaint has been forwarded to the appropriate authorities and there is nothing more to it."

Asin is currently shooting for "London Dreams" as the female lead with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan.

Police head to Mumbai, looking for Asin's missing assistant

A special police squad flew to Mumbai on Friday to search for one of actress Asin's former employees who has allegedly gone missing. The star, meanwhile, said he had called her many times asking for huge sums of money.

"A team headed by a deputy superintendent of police flew to Mumbai today (Friday) to find Asin's missing assistant N Muthu Kumar on the basis of a complaint from his mother S Vadivu," a police official told IANS.

Kumar's family has alleged that he has gone 'missing' because of abuse by the actor - a charge Asin has denied. The actress said Kumar had stopped working for her but had called her up and demanded money.

"After the aide left my employment, he has called me several times asking for money up to Rs15 lakhs to settle unpaid bills, although I am in no way concerned with his problems. I have, however, offered to cooperate with the police personnel to find Kumar in Mumbai," Asin said in a statement.

Vadivu, who said Kumar worked with Asin for four years, has alleged wrongdoing on the part of the actor.

"While Asin's father Joseph claimed to have sacked my son after he joined the Mumbai underworld several days ago, Asin has been saying different things and now I suspect Kumar is being detained because he knows the family's dirty secrets," Vadivu said.

"I am afraid that if I speak out, my son's life will be endangered," she added.

Asin has said that all accusations against her were false.

Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Sangram Jangid said the matter was just "being blown out of proportion".

"For reasons best known to the media, the issue is being blown out of proportion. The registered complaint is being investigated by my subordinates. There is nothing more to it," Jangid said.

Asin is currently shooting for London Dreams as the female lead with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan.

Asin: I’m here to stay

Asin received the Best Debutante Award, but the lovely girl felt a bit “weird” about it.

“It feels a little funny to receive a debut award after you’ve done a few films. But yes, Ghajini is my first Hindi film. I got a Filmfare Award even for my South Ghajini at the South Filmfare awards. I enjoy cinema, be it Bollywood or South. I love the grandeur of these awards and I’m not going to leave Bollywood so soon. I’m addicted to it already. But that doesn’t make South cinema any less.

I love South cinema, and will continue to be a part of it for as long as I live. I’ll do movies in whichever part of India, the only pre-requisite is that the script has to be interesting,” she says. So that’s the North and South of Asin’s story so far!

Is the Asin vs. Jiah battle still on?

There were talks about Asin and Jiah Khan not being able to get along during the making of 'Ghajini'. Apparently Jiah was miffed because Asin had more footage and Asin was insecure about Jiah's presence too.

Now Asin's career seems to be going great guns after a hit with Aamir Khan, what with a big film 'London Dreams' opposite another Khan, Salman as well as Ajay Devgan. There are talks about her acting with SRK too and there's a buzz that she has also signed a contract with Yash Raj Films.

Jiah Khan who got overshadowed in films with Amitabh Bachchan (Nishabd) and Aamir Khan (Ghajini) has not lost heart either. She has a film with Shahid Kapur and the buzz is that she'll work with Khiladi Kumar- Akshay too.

So the battle is on and Asin is spending busy days and sleepless nights. And since the Mallu lass has no time for love, she only dotes on her family and has said that her 'dad is the only man in her life'.

Jiah must be doing the same too. Well these dames sure love a lot of competition. The more the better.

Why would I feel threatened by Jiah: Asin

If all had gone well Asin would have moved into her own home in Mumbai by now.

"But I've been traveling non-stop. I had no time time to look around and find a place. But now we're finalizing a place in Bandra. Hopefully by new year I'll lock in to the place. And we'll move in. Right now we feel a little unsettled. In Mumbai you desperately need your own home."

Asin's parents have moved from Chennai to Mumbai with her. "Both of them gave up their jobs to be with me. Mom is a doctor. She has taken voluntary retirement.

She manages my home now. And Dad had seven business enterprises. He gave them up to look after my career. Right now I'm quite a handful and worth more than all his business ventures."

And she bursts into peals of laughter.

Asin is a fun-loving extremely atypical South Indian who chatters non-stop, if allowed.

She admits she was asked to keep quiet. "The marketing team felt better that I keep my distance from the press until the film's release. However that didn't stop wildly-speculative writeups about me. I read things about myself that I didn't know."

Like feeling insecure about her co-star Jiah Khan? "Is that really me? I've worked in South Indian films with female co-stars and never felt insecure. I worked with Nayantara in the Tamil Ghajini without my conflict.

Why would I feel threatened by Jiah? Was this a publicity strategy? It was being implied that I was somehow responsible for keeping Jiah out of the publicity. I don't know how one heroine can influence a huge marketing strategy."

Jiah and Asin have no scenes together. "But we have of course met and we're very cordial with one another. We got along fine. I've had no fights with any one in Tamil or Hindi cinema so far. All these stories of friction make me feel strange. I wonder who these people who spread such rumours are."

And no, Asin was under no contract with the Ghajini makers. "I'm under no contract. Didn't I sign London Dreams while Ghajini was being shot?

If I haven't signed another film, it's because I haven't come across anything exciting. I was supposed to do Priyadarshan's film with Akshay Kumar. But that clashed with the Ghajini 's promotional dates."

She will be moving into her new home in Bandra in January after the release of her first Hindi film Ghajini.

"But even without my own home I feel at home in Mumbai. For one almost the entire unit of Ghajini was South Indian. Most of them were people I had worked with. So we were constantly chattering on the sets in Tamil or Telugu. Except of course Aamir Khan who was new to all of us."

London Dreams was much tougher. "The total crew was totally Bollywood. So practically speaking London Dreams is my first Bollywood experience.

Ghajini was easier than my second Hindi film London Dreams where I had to start from scratch with the character. In Ghajini my character remained untampered except the language. Here I was speaking Hindi instead of Tamil. Otherwise no changes."

Her character is not the archetypal glamorous decorative doll. "I play a struggler in the ad world one of the many eager faces you see hanging out at ads shoots."

Asin's Hindi has always been good and she won't require any dubbing from outsiders, thank you.

How different is Aamir from Salman Khan? "While Aamir mulls overs scenes Salman must be prepared from beforehand. Because you don't seem him rehearse on the sets. But everyone in Mumbai is thoroughly professional"

As for Mumbai being wary of stepping into theaters right now Asin exudes confidence. "I'm hoping by Christmas time they'd be enthused into watching an Aamir Khan film. I'm put in my best efforts in Ghajini."

Aamir's new girl Asin has big dreams!

'Ghajini' debutante Asin is currently the hot flavour of the season.

Her big Bollywood flick 'Ghajini' hits the screens on December 25Th and she also has another biggie Raj Kumar Santoshi's 'London Dreams' with Salman Khan to look forward to.

It was interesting how she ended up bagging Aamir's highly ambitious project. She was the leading lady in the original version of 'Ghajini' in Tamil opposite Surya.

When director Murugadoss approached our perfectionist with a special screening in Oct 2005, the actor was floored by Asin's performance. He then roped her in for the remake and didn't really go for Ayesha Takia who he was also considering.

She says she was mighty impressed with Aamir who seemed serious about discussing every shot with his co-star.

She informs that there's not much difference between the original version and its remake. Only the settings are new and the language is different. And she didn't really need Hindi lessons from Aamir as she's perfectly fluent with Hindi having studied in Naval Public School.

The promising newbie has already worked with all big Khans-Aamir, Salman and Saif in an ad Her only desire now is to work with King Khan and she is hoping for a good offer

Must say, this babe has big ambitions and the drive to fulfill them.
