I`m an everyday man, not a superstar: Boman Irani

In his first movie "Josh", he had a fleeting appearance. Eight years later Boman Irani is known as a niche actor with the ability to pull audiences. But he doesn't like to be labelled a star and says he is just an average person who loves it when kids approach him.

"I'm not a hero or a superstar. I'm an everyday guy. I feel happy when children approach me. I feel that something good is happening in life when little kids recognise me, " Boman told in an interview.

After a humble beginning with Mansoor Khan's "Josh", Boman shot to fame as the eccentric Dr. J.C. Asthana in Rajkumar Hirani's 2003 hit comedy "Munnabhai M.B.B.S.".

He has since then won kudos for his powerful performances in films like "Lage Raho Munna Bhai", "Khosla Ka Ghosla", "Don - The Chase Begins Again" and "Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd".

Boman says he doesn't mind people remembering him more for "Munnabhai" than for his other roles.

"I don't mind being identified as any character as long as I'm doing a good job as an actor. I have done all kinds of roles - from an editor, judge, police officer, murderer to a corrupt businessman. And if people identify me as Dr. Asthana or Lucky Singh from 'Munnabhai' movies, I am happy, " said Boman.

"After 'Munnabhai M.B.B.S.' happened, I haven't looked back, " added the actor who was here to shoot for his forthcoming film "99".

Talking about "99", he said: "It is based in the year 1999 and I play a gambler who wants the world to know him as a normal office- goer. I sport a French beard in the film, " said Boman.

The film is being directed by US-based Indian directors - Raj Nidimuro and Krishna D.K. - who have earlier made "Shor" and "Flavors".

"99" also stars Soha Ali Khan, Kunal Khemu, Cyrus Broacha, Simone Singh, Mahesh Manjrekar and Vinod Khanna.

On being asked what kind of roles he prefers, Boman asserted: "The moment you say I want to do a role, the story suffers. I don't set priorities in terms of roles or scripts."

Although he is not choosy about roles, his favourite character is Lucky Singh from the National Award-winning movie "Lage Raho Munna Bhai".

"I like Lucky Singh a lot because he is a confused character. He is a good man but does things in the wrong way. Despite that he is a family man, " he said.

"My favourite co-stars are Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Shabana Azmi."

Before moving on to the big screen, Boman tried his luck at the family business of selling potato chips, photography and theatre. He also did TV commercials.

"Nothing was planned in my career. I just went with the flow and took everything that came to me. Selling potato chips was obvious as it was a family business. When friends suggested I should try theatre, I gave it a shot. Then I did a lot of advertisements and then movies happened.

"However, photography is the only thing that I wanted to do. I still carry my camera wherever I go and keep on taking pictures of anything and everything that excites me. I have thousands of pictures in my collection.

"I don't know when, but it is definitely in my mind to exhibit my photographs some day."

Besides "99", Boman will be seen in "Little Zizou", "Fruit & Nut", "Maharathi", "Three Idiots", "Sorry Bhai", "Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai", "Yuvraaj" and the sequel to "Don...".

He has also lent his voice to Nikhil Advani's animation movie "Ab Dilli Door Nahin".

Dabbling between his various projects, the actor is satisfied as "acting gives the luxury to create something new every time".

No regrets on Rock On not going for Oscars: Farhan Akhtar

'Taare Zameen Par' is India's entry to the Oscars and for a change, people from within as well as outside the industry are unanimous in believing that Film Federation of India has finally got it right in sending a potential winner at the 81st annual Academy awards.

However, not many are aware that apart from 'Taare Zameen Par', 'Rock On' was in close contention as well and closely lost out on making it to the final list.

"Hey, but I don't have any regrets whatsoever on 'Rock On' not being the final selection", Farhan Akhtar says in a honest tone, "We all know that 'Taare Zameen Par' is a very good film. I liked it immensely.

I have worked with Aamir in 'Dil Chahta Hai' and he is a very good friend. I wish him all the success in the world. He had earlier taken 'Lagaan' to the Oscars and got so close. May he be the second time lucky."

Ritesh Sidhwani, co-producer of 'Rock On' too shares similar sentiments, "I guess the jury has chosen what they felt worked best. 'Taare Zameen Par' as well as 'Rock On' were shortlisted but ultimately it is the jury's job to choose only one.

I am satisfied with where 'Rock On' has reached and wish Aamir all the best. I sincerely hope this time he wins."

Abhishek Kapoor, who himself has now been second time lucky with 'Rock On' hitting the bull's eye admits that he would have loved 'Rock On' to make it for the Oscars. But now that the decision has been taken, he is not ruing over it.

"Of course, I would have loved my film to be chosen. However, now that 'Taare Zameen Par' has been selected, I wish their entire team all the very best of luck."

Suneel Darshan, who headed the Film Federation of India jury, agrees that it was a difficult choice to pick one of the nine films which were in fray. However, ultimately the committee members took a unanimous call and put their bet on 'Taare Zameen Par'.

"The film has a universal appeal and we truly believe that it would make an impression at the highest platform as well", says Suneel Darshan.

Other films which were in contention for being nominated were Marathi films 'Valu' and 'Tingya', Nishikant Kamat's 'Mumbai Meri Jaan', Neeraj Pandey's 'A Wednesday', Ashutosh Gowarikar's 'Jodhaa Akbar', Subhash Ghai's 'Black and White' and the Telugu film 'Ghanyam'.

The awards ceremony will be held on February 22, 2009

As a wife I tend to get partial towards Abhishek: Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai says that "Drona", in which hubby Abhishek Bachchan plays the title role, reminds her of her childhood days.

"'Drona' is a film that is rarely made in Bollywood. Not only will kids enjoy the film, elders too will revisit their childhood fantasies while watching the movie.

Even I was reminded of my childhood days - when my world used to revolve around fairy tales like the stories of 'Amar Chitra Katha' and the horses, angels, knights and magic in it, " Aishwarya told reporters here Friday.

Aishwarya, the brand ambassadress of Longines, was here for the press conference of Longines Sports Watch collection.

Commenting on Abhishek's performance in "Drona", she said: "If you are asking a wife to rate her husband, then I will tend to get partial. But if you are asking an actor to comment on another, then I will say that Abhishek is a dedicated actor and knows his job well."

Directed by Goldie Behl, "Drona" is a fantasy thriller. It was released Thursday.

Aishwarya also walked the ramp showcasing the new collection of HydroConquest watches for the first time in Kolkata.

"This is the first time that I have walked the ramp in Kolkata. The city has always been special for my family (the Bachchans) and for me.

And since it's the auspicious time of Durga Puja, I requested Longines to launch their collection in Kolkata first. The next destination is Delhi. We will go there Saturday, " the actress said.

On her experience of walking the ramp after so many years, Aishwarya said it felt like "the old days are back".

Aishwarya has just finished shooting for Shankar's "Robot" that stars Rajnikant in the male lead. She is to soon start shooting for Mani Ratnam's "Ravana" with Abhishek.

Bubbbly Preity Zinta goes silent for Salman

Actors are defined by the roles they place on screen and off screen and after successfully representing Punjab at the IPL with her KING's IX team, Preity Zinta can now be seen in a role never attempted before with Heroes.

Preity plays Salman's war widow –the sole winner of the family who single-handedly strives to bring up her son and keep the home fires burning.

Being the perfectionist she is Preity made a dedicated choice to go back to acting school and learn how to portray the character of a rustic Punjabi woman.

Anupam Kher tutored her on how to imbibe the dialect and body language.

Samir Says, "Priety who is known for her bubbly, enthusiastic self worked on her body language and observed the locals there to portray the demure, silent but strong woman that her character is in the film. If you ask me, I think this is one of her best performances to date."

This method acting transcended onto the set as her introduction in the film is on a tractor and this achievement as another first for the feisty lady but with the help of Salman and a few assistants she mastered the skill of being in control of the tractor.

Samir says "In the scene Preity is driving a tractor, she was very nervous but she pulled it off with easy driving a full circle of the field and bringing it to a stop only a few feet away from Sohail, Vatsal and Dwij.

Even though she had control over the tractor every time I shouted cut people from the crew would run to help her stop the thing, and every time she would stop it get off and give a look as though what are you doing here I got it under control. She was super!"

Her co stars fondly remember her support and encouragement and vouch for her complete dedication. Looks like Preity is winning more than the hearts of Punjab!! We are sure Heroes will add another feather to her multifaceted cap.
