Police head to Mumbai, looking for Asin's missing assistant

A special police squad flew to Mumbai on Friday to search for one of actress Asin's former employees who has allegedly gone missing. The star, meanwhile, said he had called her many times asking for huge sums of money.

"A team headed by a deputy superintendent of police flew to Mumbai today (Friday) to find Asin's missing assistant N Muthu Kumar on the basis of a complaint from his mother S Vadivu," a police official told IANS.

Kumar's family has alleged that he has gone 'missing' because of abuse by the actor - a charge Asin has denied. The actress said Kumar had stopped working for her but had called her up and demanded money.

"After the aide left my employment, he has called me several times asking for money up to Rs15 lakhs to settle unpaid bills, although I am in no way concerned with his problems. I have, however, offered to cooperate with the police personnel to find Kumar in Mumbai," Asin said in a statement.

Vadivu, who said Kumar worked with Asin for four years, has alleged wrongdoing on the part of the actor.

"While Asin's father Joseph claimed to have sacked my son after he joined the Mumbai underworld several days ago, Asin has been saying different things and now I suspect Kumar is being detained because he knows the family's dirty secrets," Vadivu said.

"I am afraid that if I speak out, my son's life will be endangered," she added.

Asin has said that all accusations against her were false.

Greater Chennai Police Commissioner Sangram Jangid said the matter was just "being blown out of proportion".

"For reasons best known to the media, the issue is being blown out of proportion. The registered complaint is being investigated by my subordinates. There is nothing more to it," Jangid said.

Asin is currently shooting for London Dreams as the female lead with Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan.

Deepika Padukone longs for classic role

Deepika Padukone has had a dream-run in Bollywood with just three releases, but the model-turned-actress says her dream is to play the elegant Audrey Hepburn, her style icon.

"I would like to play Audrey Hepburn, my style icon, in movies like Breakfast At Tiffany's or Roman Holiday," Deepika told IANS on the sidelines of the Wills India Fashion Week (WIFW) on Saturday, where she walked the ramp for Ranna Gill and Rina Dhaka's collections sponsored by luxury brand Fiama Di Wills.

After debuting opposite Shah Rukh Khan in the 2007 hit Om Shanti Om, and acting in Bachna Ae Haseeno and Chandni Chowk To China, Deepika's next is Love Aaj Kal alongside Saif Ali Khan. And she is all praise for filmmaker Imtiaz Ali of Jab We Met fame.

"I enjoyed working with Imtiaz Ali in his movie Love Aaj Kal, where he cast me opposite Saif. It was a dream working for a sensitive director like him. Imtiaz just seemed to know the kind of person we were and brought out the best in us. He guided us all through the movie," said the leggy beauty who was dressed in a simple black halter-neck.

Deepika is now looking forward to begin work for newcomer Vijay Lalwani's Kartik Calling Kartik, which also stars actor-director Farhan Akhtar and Boman Irani.

"It is an offbeat movie, a psychological thriller. But I am not going to talk much about it," she said.

The actress admits she has a soft corner for action movies, though all genres appeal to her.

"An action movie is something I have always wanted to do, but I cannot specify any real genre that appeals to me. Cinema today is changing. And as an actor, I will never throw my hands up... will never be happy saying this is the best character I have portrayed. I am critical of myself, rarely happy," said Deepika.

As Indian cinema changes to adapt new formats and contents, Deepika feels the role of women in cinema is also changing.

"It is becoming more challenging. Even in the past, there were movies where women did not have to run around trees. An actress could opt to show off her talent instead."

People, she explained, have this strange notion that if a woman wears make-up, she cannot be taken seriously.

"Take off your make-up and only then you can do serious cinema. But glamorous roles and a glamorous screen presence do not make one a non-actor. The content of cinema is also changing, evolving... it is no longer the regular boy-meets-girl story," the actress said.

Deepika usually decides on the projects she takes up after reading the scripts.

"The movies are my call though I run my parents through what I am doing. But they are new to movies, hence unfamiliar. But after Om Shanti Om and Bachna Aai Haseeno, I have matured," she said.

The actress confesses that she is not much of a bookworm. "But I am reading the Kite Runner now and it might turn out to be the best book I have ever read. I have grown up listening to all kinds of music - from Kishore da to Mohammed Rafi," she said.

Aa Dekhen Zara not a copy: Neil Nitin

Is the forthcoming film Aa Dekhen Zara very similar to the British movie Freeze Frame? Incidentally, the Neil Nitin Mukesh-Bipasha Basu starrer was earlier titled Freeze. But the lead actor maintains the two are very different.

"What nonsense! I will reaffirm that Aa Dekhen Zara is an absolutely original film based on a completely original concept. It's not at all a copy of any film. There is not a single element in the film that has been copied," Neil told IANS.

Freeze Frame, a 2004 film starring Lee Evans in a lead role, was about an ultra-paranoid murder suspect who takes to filming himself round-the-clock to provide an alibi just in case he's ever accused of another crime.

Directed by Jehangir Surti, Aa Dekhen Zara tells the story of a man who gets a camera that can tell the future.

"Just because the two films have a camera in the middle of it all doesn't classify one as an original and other as a copy. You can't bring two and two together and make it 22. Once you see the film you will realise that Aa Dekhen Zara has nothing to do with Freeze Frame," Neil said.

He also explained: "Freeze was always the working title of the film and we always knew that it would change later. The kind of subject that we had in hand, the title Freeze wasn't really going with it."

So is he happy with the title Aa Dekhen Zara?

"Of course, it's the apt title. The film is about something that may happen tomorrow, courtesy the powers that the camera comes with. It's like 'let's go and see what's going to happen next'. So doesn't the phrase Aa Dekhen Zara convey the same point? The same cannot be said about the word Freeze. You can't excite people to peep into the future with that," Neil remarked.

Aishwarya has a 'super-busy' shoot schedule ahead

Aishwarya Rai sure has a crowded year ahead, having signed movies with filmmakers Vishal Bhardwaj, Rituparno Ghosh, Abhinay Deo and Vipul Shah.

And the actress says each of these films is equally challenging and "special" to her.

The former Miss World has something unique to say about each movie and filmmaker.

"Ritu-da and I have agreed to work together again after Chokher Bali and Raincoat in Bengali and Hindi respectively. Our next film together is bilingual. And a very challenging one," said Aishwarya.

"As for Abhinay Deo's film it's got me and Abhishek (Bachchan) in it. But it covers a territory very different from what audiences have seen in Guru, Dhoom 2 and Sarkar Raj. Abhinay's film is also very different from Mani Ratnam's Raavan. It's a special challenge to work with my husband because we've to make sure we don't repeat ourselves," the Bachchan daughter-in-law added.

The 'super-busy' star is also looking forward to working with Akshay Kumar after a long time in Vipul Shah's next movie.

"It's something that Vipul, Akshay and I haven't done before. The last time Akshay and I came together in Khakee we played almost antagonists. This time we'll hopefully play a more compatible couple," Aishwarya laughed.

So why the sudden flurry of activity?

"These are projects with directors whom I've wanted to work with for a long time. To say no to them when we both are so keen to work with one another seems inappropriate," she explained.

Aishwarya also teams up with filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj for the first time.

"Vishal and I have wanted to work together ever since he was the music composer on a project that got shelved. We had promised one another that I'd star in his film whenever he turned director," she said.

Right after his directorial debut with children's film Makdee, Vishal had offered Aishwarya a film called Timbuctoo, but it got shelved.

"I was very impressed by Vishal's work. But he insisted that we'll work together only when he finds the absolutely right project. That has finally happened. Vishal has bounced the script off me. And we both feel this is the right project for us to come together."

The project will go into production by the year-end.

He completed 44 years of age and 21 years in the industry since the release of his debut film Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak.

The Star descends
Aamir came down to interact with his fans who were waiting outside his home. Although he looked as cute as ever in his bright red tee, we could make out he didn't have the Ghajini look anymore. Thank God the eight packs have gone and we have our lean chocolate boy back!

Make a Wish!

Still A Boy!
Age doesn't seem to be reflecting on his face as it lights up with a boyish smile.

And this one is for you little girl

Say cheese
The birthday boy takes a picture with all his fans - young and old. He could have shown a little more emotion, we think.

Deepika Padukone goes on a much needed break

Deepika Padukone doesn't believe in being greedy and signing as many projects that she can to remain in the rat race, she is definitely a class apart.

A committed professional that she is, Deepika recently completed all her assignments on hand that included shooting TV commercials for all the five brands she has on hand apart from her pending films.

Now maintaining a low profile after the debacle of her last release, Chandni Chowk to China, Deepika has taken a much needed break before she begins her next film.

A close pal of Deepika revealed, “Deepika starts shooting for Farhan Akhtar starrer thriller Kartik Calling Kartik being produced by Farhan’s banner Excel Entertainment from April 4th.

She has been working constantly for the last few months that included Saif Ali Khan’s home production Love Aaj Kal apart from CC2C.

So now before she begins a long cycle of constant work again what with Farhan’s film and later Sajid Khan’s directorial next, Housefull with Akshay Kumar she wants to take some rest and recharge herself.

She is not in a hurry to sign multiple projects right now and is happy having only these two films on her hand.”

While what she intends to do in this break may not be revealed, but one thing is sure, she may finally get to spend some quality time with boyfriend Ranbir Kapoor, who too incidentally be shooting in and around Mumbai during this time.

Pakistan's ex-Prez on Koel's couch

How often has a General from a contentious neighbouring country delightfully deigned to sit on a furry red couch? When is the last time you saw a quasi-dictator blush and giggle when asked about a beautiful Bangladeshi girl from his youth?

Talking about her chat with the Musharraf, Koel says, "I had decided, just like any other celebrity I invite on the couch, I would strive to get to know the person behind the drama.

By getting Pervez Musharraf, a man whose career has been coupled with coups, on the couch and peeling off the layers to reveal his hardly-ever-seen laughing, lighter side, I pulled off a coup of my own. You'd be a fool to miss it.

Here are excerpts from Koel's chat with Musharraf:

Koel: Gen Musharaf, you are a romantic guy at heart. Apart from serenading your beautiful wife in your young days as young officer, there was a particular incident involving a beautiful Bangladeshi girl that would have altered the course of your life as an army officer and perhaps the course of history.

But of course, the 1971 war with India broke out and every thing changed. Would you like to tell us little about that incident.

Musharraf: I don't think I would like to get involved in that. One does come across girls, obviously I am not leading a secluded life and that is where it stands.

Koel: It is almost like Indian movies you almost got court martialled for the sake of a girl. You got...

Musharraf: No, it was not because of the girl, I wanted to go to Karachi to meet my parents on leave, it wasn't because of the girl...

Koel: Then why were you going to be court-martialled?

Musharraf: Because I went a day earlier. For certain reasons, I got annoyed and may be I did a wrong thing, yes.

Dharavi Children Rock with Timbaland Productions and Crew

It was very thoughtful of Jim Beanz to perform for underprivileged kids from our very hard-up section of the society. Motivated by the “Slumdog Millionaire”, Timbaland productions brought glitter in the eyes of these real life children by hosting a live show at Dharavi, Mumbai.

Timbaland Productions brought cheer among the children, although short lived, by Production crew along with the Accorn Foundation putting in joint efforts. And some of the most wanted performers ascended to show their support. The artists who performed live at the event were- Jim Beanz, Rebel of Timbaland Productions, Apache Indian and Amar. A local band named Sout Dandy Squad also volunteered to contribute their performance for the children.

We applaud Timbaland’s efforts to take some time out of their hectic schedule to do such an impressive act for those less fortunate. Here are some pictures from the live show that was especially for those special kids in Dharavi.

Things you never knew about Bipasha Basu

Bipasha Basu is one of the model turned actresses who has succeeded in a big way in the Hindi film industry. She is a huge sex symbol, knows it and has no qualms about it. She was even voted the sexiest Asian woman in a poll taken in 2007.

She was the winner of the Ford's Godrej Cinthol Supermodel contest for 1996 and is currently one of the mainstream actresses in Bollywood.

As an actress though, Bipasha still has to prove her self though admittedly she has shown the odd spark or two when given the chance in a film like Corporate (2006) whereas her other highly regarded performances like Jism (2003) and No Entry (2005) have worked more due to her being cast correctly rather than her acting talent.

Birthday: January 7th, 1979 in New Delhi.

Debut Film: Abbas-Mustan’s Ajnabee (2001).

Major Impact: Raaz (2002).

Successful Films: Jism (2003), No Entry (2005), Corporate (2006), Omkara (2006), Dhoom 2 (2006), Race (2008), Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008).

Once said that she wished she were a boy, then she would get those roles which bypass her due to her image.

Why Khans are so fond of Esha Deol...

Esha Deol has always been a friend of the Khan family, Feroz Khan’s family that is. Fardeen calls her his best male buddy; given their rapport with each other while she was once upon a time romantically linked with cousin Zayed.

Feroz Khan himself is very fond of the girl and Esha would drop in at the FK house in Juhu even if the boys weren’t around to catch up with her Feroz Uncle.

So it wasn’t surprising to see Esha making regular rounds of the hospital when Feroz Khan was recently hospitalized.

But unlike other celebrities making a scene out of hospital visits, we are told Esha would be very subdued and would make a quiet entry into the hospital and spend time with Feroz Khan doing her best to avoid drawing attention to her in the hospital.

Knowing Feroz Khan being a scrabble fan, she would be playing word games with him to keep him in good spirits in his troubled times.

One evening she was even seen carrying a dabba of home made food for him and basically taking good care of his like his own kin. That’s quite touching, we think.

Mugdha's first day in Jail goes horribly wrong

Madhur Bhandakar’s latest venture finally made a take off yesterday, 12th March, 2009, which unfortunately turned a bit unpleasant on day 1 of the shoot.

It so happened that Neil Nitin and Mugdha kicked off with the first day shoot for Jail in Bandra. The scene had to be an intimate one in a stationary car when the scene required Mugdha to put her head on Neil’s head. Since it was a long shot Madhur and his crew was quite far away from the car.

At that point of time, a group of youngsters saw Mugdha and started whistling and singing songs from Fashion and stuffs. They also passed a few comments on the actors.

Neil at the spur of the moment realized that the group was very coming quite close to the car and took his call that time. He drove the car off to Bandra Reclamation side which was much secluded and where they did not get much of public attention.

However they returned to the same spot and continued with their shoot, a little careful this time. They completed the shot successfully later on. Mugdha did say that she had not shot on the streets of Mumbai during Fashion, so she had no idea that even these things could happen. Madhur hopes he gets a peaceful day tomorrow.

With Jail kick starting with ‘not-so-pleasant-day’, we hope Madhur and his troop get better and ‘peaceful’ moments in the days to come and wish his Jail succeeds like all his other films.

Now, for the first time the Mother-daughters trio have come together for the cover sotry and page of the magazine ‘Jade’. Gulaal - Movie Review

Starring: Kay Kay Menon, introducing Raj Singh Chaudhary, Jesse Randhawa, Deepak Dobriyal, Aditya Srivastava, Ayesha Mohan, Piyush Mishra and Abhimanyu Singh
Director: Anurag Kashyap
Rating: ****

Set in the fictional Rajpur town of modern-day Rajasthan, Gulaal is entangled with stories of student politics, a covertly taking shape local rebellion for an independent Rajputana stare and love taking it forward.

The meek, Dileep Singh (Raj Singh Chaudhary), is an idealistic man who gets caught in the whirlpool of student politics and much more, as he gets sucked into the world of Rananjay (Abhimanyu Singh), Dukkey Bana (Kay Kay), an autocratic local Rajput leader who is leading a planned armed movement to reclaim Rajputana for Rajputs, a brother-sister couple (Aditya and Ayesha), the illegitimate children of an erstwhile Rajput king who are seething at their bastard status (Aditya Srivastava, Ayesha Mohan) and Anuja (Jesse), a young teacher who becomes a social misfit in college after a particular incident inflicted upon her by college hooligans.

Dilip gets used as a pawn by people who matter to him and ends up being an unwilling player in a sinister plot. What it all leads to forms the rest of the film.

Bollywood gets yet another talented actor in Raj Singh Chaudhari who is also the co-writer of the film. In a film packed with great acting talents, Raj stands out with his convincing act. Kay Kay Menon as always is simply superb.

Another show stealer is Deepak Dobriyal who plays his loyal assistant in the film. He speaks volumes just with his expressions without speaking much.

Mahie Gill as the mujra girl cum beauty parlour owner is stunning and has tremendous screen presence. Aditya Srivastava and Ayesha Mohan are good as well. Piyush Mishra is terrific as Kay Kay’s brother and has the film’s best lines.

Gulaal was claimed as Anurag Kashyap’s angriest film and it indeed is. It explores the dynamics of royalty vis-à-vis the democratic system.

Sectionalism today has set everywhere in a big way and the film is the true reflection of where our nation stands today.

Though been in the making for more than four years now, never once the film gives a dated feeling. The credit for which also goes to cinematographer Rajeev Ravi.

Kashyap’s dialogues that are replete with sarcastic one-liners, beautiful poetries and philosophies and also the referential meanings are amongst the finest seen on screen for a long long time in Bollywood.

Piyush Mishra apart from acting superbly also scores full marks for his hard hitting lyrics and beautiful music that is mix of many interesting things such as sarcasm, peppiness, and sensibility. It is the film’s lyrics and music that make the film a completely an extraordinary experience.

Gulaal is something that is extremely relatable, especially for today’s youth. Though at a running time of over two and a half hours, there are times when the film tends to appear dragging, it is worth a watch.

The film though has Anurag’s now trademark abstractness at times, it is not as incomprehensible as it was in No Smoking or in Dev.D. Go watch Gulaal.

For children to happen Kareena first needs to get married. “It won’t happen for the next two years for sure. Am I crazy to get married now when so many wonderful things are happening to my career?

Saif himself is ultra-busy trying to set up his production house. Marriage can wait. I’m just happy to have him by my side. I’ve got the best guy any girl can ever have. Right now I’m so busy I don’t have time to sleep properly. I haven’t even had time to move into my new house.”

After a long time Kareena will be in Mumbai for a some time now. “I’ve a month-long schedule of Rensil’s film coming up in Mumbai.”

It’s hard for Kareena to keep up with the surge crowds and awards in her life.

In Delhi last week, Saif and Kareena returned home this week to Mumbai without much shooting done for Rensil d’Silva’s film.

“We never expected such crowds. They were everywhere. And it was impossible to shoot, ” she says sounding not the least put off. “Those people who love me out there keep me going. I love my fans and awards.”

And now Delhi will have to be fudged in the Mumbai schedule of d’Silva’s film.

The extent of the surging crowds in Delhi in the key shooting spots like Jama Masjid and Janpath for Rensel D’Silva’s untitled film was so huge and unmanageable that the unit has returned without shooting the required sequences.

Back in Mumbai after a week of futile shooting Kareena says, “ Everywhere we went there were these huge number of people who had come to see Saif and me. They were very sweet very well-behaved. But unfortunately the number of people in key places like Jama Masjid and Janpath was always too high to shoot properly.”

Resultantly there was almost no shooting.

Says Kareena, “We did can some shots. But it was impossible to shoot with wide-angle lenses because the crowds were everywhere. We’ll now have to recreate some of the Delhi sequences in Mumbai.”

Kareena is certainly not unhappy about the attention she got in Delhi. “The people in Delhi were so warm. It just made me realize how much of a responsibility I have towards my audience. At this stage of my career I’d rather take another holiday than do a bad film.”

Aamir gets to see Big B's secret new look but Ranbir gets turned away

The Big B had a surprise visitor at Film City on Saturday when Aamir Khan dropped in to meet him while he was shooting for Balki's Pa with Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan.

Visitors are strictly not allowed on the sets of Paa. But who says no to Aamir?

Some awkward moments ensued when Aamir showed up. But he was soon escorted to Mr Bachchan's van where the makeup man (none other than Stephan Dupuis who did Robin Williams' makeup in Mrs Doubtfire) was at it for a good four hours.

And then Aamir certifiably became the first person outside the cast and crew of Pa to see the Big B in his startling prosthetic-induced new look.

However there was a price. Aamir was sworn to secrecy literally, that he wouldn't reveal the details of Mr Bachchan's look in Pa to the outside world.

The film's director Balki is paranoid about his leading man's looks leaking out. "We don't allow a single visitor, not even close relatives or friends of crew members on the set. Phones of course are a complete no-no.

The next thing you know the look will be splashed on the net. Aamir of course couldn't be turned down. But yes, we did swear him to complete secrecy almost like a boy scout's cross-your-heart kind of pledge.

We can't afford to take any risks. If Mr Bachchan's look leaks out the plot is out. In any case Aamir is a man who understands the exigencies of cinema. He will hardly be expected to leak out the look."

While Aamir was lucky enough to get a dekko at the Big B's unique never-before look, Sanjay Dutt and Ranbir Kapoor who dropped in on Sunday were not that lucky.

While Dutt met up with the Big B when the senior actor was not in his makeup and costumes, Ranbir had to be turned away after being appeased by looking at a photograph of the Big B's look!
