Introducing 12 year-old Bachchan

66 year-old Amitabh Bachchan plays a 12 year-old for the first time in R Balki’s Paa. He will be introduced as a debutant in the opening title of the film.

Director R Balki made the decision as he believes (rightly so) that it is the first time Amitabh Bachchan is playing a 12 year-old and. The Cheeni Kum director said that if there is anyone in India who (possibly) hasn’t seen Bachchan before will not recognize him at all. His character is simply called Auro in the film.

The actor is a school of acting in himself. He was so involved in the film that became the character even when the cameras went off. He looked and behaved like an ill-behaved 12 year-old on the sets. As Auro, he threw tantrums and was hard to control or to discipline. He would run around the place and not sit still till people gave in to his demands.

What’s more is that his character Auro has only 4-5 teeth and that’s because he is addicted to chocolates and ages in reverse. Amitabh Bachchan has been advised not to eat chocolates because of his health issues but he didn’t let that come in the way of his role. He used to relish chocolates on the sets of the film. The reason Auro is a chocolate addict is because he suffers from Progeria and chocolates aides the metabolism of people suffering from this condition.

Balki says that the veteran actor has delivered the finest performance of his career as a 12 year-old and deserves not only the best acting award but also the awards in the child and debutant actor categories.

So what is Amitabh doing in Singapore?

Amitabh Bachchan’s extended holiday in Singapore has started to give filmmakers sleepless nights. Now, a number of them have started visiting Big B in Singapore as they want to know when he’ll be back to honour his film commitments. AB is staying by the side of his ‘dear friend’ Amar Singh, after the politico underwent an operation.”There has been a steady inflow of those producers and directors who wish to work with me into Singapore.
They are unable to understand why I have stayed back in Singapore for such a long time. Many have been asking questions. Many have been somewhat cynical. Others just plain funny,” writes Amitabh on his blog.Amitabh adds about the buzz on his absence: “R. Balki (the director of Cheeni Kum and Paa) was convinced that my stay was a pretense! He believed that Ram Gopal Varma had quietly sneaked in to the city and had completed making an entire film about me in the environs of the hospital!
Troubled by this rumour, RGV actually came to Singapore this morning just to check who his namesake is who wants to employ me without his tacit approval! But jokes apart, RGV is in town not on some ‘mission impossible’ but to discuss the promotion and release formalities for our film Rann – The New(s) Battle,” he writes. The world sure seems to be going crazy wanting to know when Big B will be back.

Bachchans secretly shooting in Delhi

It’s the beta who’s older, actually, in the movie that was being shot in Delhi yesterday.

Amitabh and Abhishek Bachchan continued shooting for Pa in Delhi, amid tight security – and secrecy. Amitabh is playing a bald man in the scenes that were being shot in Delhi, and every measure was taken to ensure that he was not visible to onlookers.

He was to come to Dwarka Sector 9 Metro station to shoot, but was dropped mid-way at Tagore Garden Metro Station. The shots were taken on the train, in the stations, and AB returned without being seen. Even elsewhere, Amitabh would only appear with his head covered. A source from the unit says that his make-up started at 2 am and went on till the early hours of the morning.

I'm not as rich as SRK: Amitabh

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan says he couldn't bid for an Indian Premier League (IPL) team because he doesn't have "as much money as (Kolkata Knight Riders owner) Shah Rukh Khan".

"I don't have as much money as Shah Rukh. He has money and so he owns a team," Amitabh said on Zee News' celebrity chat show "Kahiye Janab" to be aired on Saturday.

Amitabh sent a congratulatory SMS to skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni for his Padma Shri and didn't get a response. But he says he holds no grudge against the cricket star.

"He must have been busy, there's no need to make an issue out of this."

The sexagenarian otherwise makes for an avid viewer of the IPL and says he watches "almost all the matches".

Amitabh Bachchan on the completion of one year of his new passion - Blogging

Blogging seems to have become a leading interest in your life. When and how did you develop an interest in it?
It is not a leading interest, but I can safely say that blogging seeks my involvement every day. I had heard of the concept, but had no idea what it was and what it entailed. I heard of Aamir having one and during a discussion with BigAdda who were designing my website, I enquired after it. They happily put the whole concept together within days, trained me on some essentials for its operation and I made a soft beginning. It has been most enlightening since.

Did it occur to you that you may not have the time to pursue blogging seriously?
No. That didn't bother me. What worried me was my absence from it, once having started it 'seriously'. To me it is a wonderful medium to be able to connect with my fans and well -wishers.

What is it about blogging that you like the best?
The ability to convey individually and personally my feelings to the reader, secure in the thought that it shall reach them without any corruption.

You are an extremely private person. And yet you seem happy sharing your day-to-day activities with your bloggers' community. How and why did that happen?
I think this is a completely erroneous notion in the minds of those that form opinions on me. What may I ask, leads one to believe that I am an 'extremely private person'? Every day of my life for the last 40 years I have been going in front of the camera and exposing, or at least trying to expose, every possible emotion or attitude that I possess. Actors are indeed as transparent as they can possibly be when in front of the lens. You come to know how they speak, how they laugh, how they cry, how they dance and run and emote and.... What more would you want to know about them to declassify them from privacy? I lead a normal life, just as any other. If the media is not aware of it, or has failed to discover it, which in today's very intrusive environment I find difficult to believe, then the onus is on them. Just because media is unable to gather much about you publicly, does not mean that you are private.

How close do you feel to these faceless friends who visit you regularly on the blog?
'Faceless' is a harsh term. I refer to them as my 'extended family'. They confide in me. They show affection and concern. They get upset at times and reprimand me. They share their dreams and ambitions with me. They seek answers and opinions from me. They show respect to me as an elder. They abuse me and most importantly, they miss me when I am not there on time. Are not all these wonderfully domesticated attributes? And now very soon my server BigAdda is developing software where my readers will be able to put up their photograph on the blog against their name. So they shall no longer be 'faceless'. Also as we go along, due to the massive patronage in numbers from the readers, many more exciting features are being developed to bring them closer to me. We already have the MoBlog feature functioning, which enables me to write onto the blog through my mobile. And soon I shall have the facility to be able to record on blog with my voice, or dictate a message to them and then finally for them, in time, to be able to communicate their response to me via the mobile. The numbers are quite phenomenal - 25,000 number of visits per day, and over 100,000 page views per day. Multiply and do some mathematics on this from April 2008, every day and the figure is quite amazing. So this shall become eventually a huge exercise in communication management!! My extended family extends further!!

Amitabh Bachchan Are there any special friends /fans on the blog?
To me they are all special. Each one of them. Unique and sincere in whatever they express.

You've certainly enriched their lives by your presence. How have your blogging buddies enriched your life?
Brilliant question!! And one that I am so happy to answer. They enrich my life by their honesty and frankness. By pulling me out of my closet at times and showing me a mirror. By critically analysing events and moments. By educating me on my faults. By acclaiming creativity, not just mine but wherever they see it; a director, a film, an artist a colleague they admire and appreciate, or do not. A moment in time which requires attention and comment. Just such a vast library of information and expression. Some possess absolutely astonishing ideas and vocabulary, distinct and classified. Others bring forth their personal problems and expect nothing more than a patient ear. It's like being in a closed room with each one of them. I follow them and at times correct myself through what they suggest. I also disagree with them and explain why. A most enriching exercise all of it. Whether or not I enrich them is really for them to answer.

How much time do you devote to blogging? Is it now a mandatory part of your daily life?
I blog whenever I get the time. It could be during the day at work, or late at night just before dropping off to sleep. Sometimes, I convey rapidly, most of the time not. But I do convey everyday. As I write to you I am on DAY 271. Not a single day missed since when I started, in April 2008. And may I have the strength to continue in this fashion.

How different is your interaction with them as compared with what you share with regular person-to-person fans?
The same... No different.

Your command over the language is being oohed and aahed about. Has blogging polished up your writing skills?
I have no writing skills. I write what comes to my heart when the computer is ready to digitize my thoughts. The 'oohing' and 'aahing' is more perhaps, I am certain, because of my inadequacy in the craft.

Do you feel liberated of the need to put your thoughts and voice across on the media?
Yes I do. Liberated to give my expression as opposed to that which is perceived. Liberated to contradict a mischievous and evil accusation. Liberated to be able to inform in the correctness of things. Liberated to spread the literary genius of my Father; a due that poets and writers never ever achieve in their lifetime. Liberated from the fear of that sensationalised 'cut and paste' headline the following morning, the following week or following month. Liberated to share a private moment with those that understand and show sympathy. Liberated to have a voice without ulterior benefit. Liberated to feel the warmth and love from those that express, instantly. Liberated to construct a passage into my heart and head. Liberated to be able to challenge. Liberated to accept defeat and to seek the strength to overcome it. Liberated to criticize criticism and to acknowledge acclaim. And finally, liberated to stand up to 'wretched' puerile kindergarten rhymed opinion makers and be able to exercise the constitutional right of every living Indian ; the freedom of my expression.

Finally, has blogging freed you of the inhibitions regarding your privacy? Are you now more inclined to write an autobiography?
I am incapable of writing an autobiography!

Amitabh Bachchan remembers Feroz Khan

Describes him as a flamboyant filmmaker

Mourning the death of veteran actor Feroz Khan, Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan says that despite several attempts in the past the two could not work together.

"There were many attempts by both of us to work together but somehow it didn't work out," Amitabh posted on his blog.

"He will be remembered for his passion and commitment to the craft. May his soul rest in peace and may the Almighty give his family strength to bear the loss," he added.

The flamboyant actor-filmmaker died on Sunday at his farmhouse in Bangalore after battling cancer for a year. He was 69.

Amitabh describes Feroz Khan, who made hits like "Dharmatma" and "Qurbani", as a flamboyant filmmaker.

"A flamboyant filmmaker, one that in the middle of his acting career became a producer and director and gave us some very memorable films - all with a certain stamp of flamboyance.

"What he displayed in his persona, reflected in the way he made his films. In many ways, he pioneered a certain flash and sophistication in his very first venture as a maker and that remained with him and all his films throughout," he wrote.

Amitabh also pointed out that Feroz Khan always had a "progressive and visible difference in the way he functioned" including the "content of the subjects he chose, in the unique casting that he did or in the fresh talent that he introduced in music and presentation".

Amitabh recalled the recent Stardust award function where Feroz Khan was given the Stardust Pride of the Industry award.

"In a most poignant moment, his son Fardeen had received it on his behalf from Jaya (Bachchan) on stage - Feroz being too ill to be present," he added.

Amitabh Bachchan’s new look!

As always, it is impeccably stylish

Amitabh Bachchan is known for his impeccable sense of style. The actor wears his custom-made suits with as much panache and élan as he does his linen trousers and shirts. But on the morning of March 6, Big B fans were in for a treat.

Kicking off the International Indian Film Academy voting weekend, Bachchan arrived in cream linen trousers and a black jacket. Shorn off his signature French beard!

“This is for my role in my film PAA, for which I have begun filming. The film required me to take it off,” informs Amitabh, “But don’t worry, it will be back. I mean the beard!”

To a remark that he looked younger without the beard, he replied, “I am 67 years old and have been working for 40 years now. Ab kya young lagna (now looking young is immaterial)!”

Known to be punctual and, more often than not, early for appearances, Bachchan arrived over an hour late, wearing dark glasses. “I have been filming and, last night, we finished very late. We worked till 4 am. I am very sorry for being late.”

Kareena Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan patch up... finally

It is learnt from reliable sources that Kareena Kapoor has finally patched up with the Bachchans now. Few days back it was wrongly reported in a Mumbai tabloid that the actress had ignored Amitabh Bachchan at an event completely.

Infact a very close friend of the actress told us that Kareena is one person who will never do so in public. “She knows how to balance her professional life and personal life. She has never shown any animosity towards them. She has been born and brought up in this industry and the question of showing disrespect for the elders will never arise.” the close friend said.

But now Mr. Bachchan has put all rumours to rest by writing in his blog that Kareena and family members as well as the Bachchan family have always given due respect to each other.

Another source reveals, “Mr. Bachchan feels that Kareena is a very warm and affectionate person. She has never disrespected her elders. Mr. Bachchan has seen Kareena grown up in front of him as there has always been a huge connection between the Kapoors and the Bachchans from the great grand father times.”

It is may be recalled that that the Bachchan family was not in touch with Kareena Kapoor after Abhishek Bachchan and Karishma Kapoor broke off their engagement. In fact Kareena and Abhishek had made their debut with J.P. Dutta’s film Refugee. The duo had also received good reveiews for their performance.

But after their split Kareena and Abhishek Bachchan have never done a film. Sources had revealed that Abhishek Bachchan had refused to do films with Kareena though she was ready to work with him. In return Kareena had also refused to do Dostana with Abhishek when she was offered the film from Karan Johar.

When Big B ignored Rekha

Much as we would like to lay old ghosts to rest, they keep rising up and grabbing our eyeballs.

Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha have spawned a million stories, some on film and some in real life. But what happened on the evening of Feb 28 at the 54th Idea Filmfare Awards is a story in pictures.

At the end of the function Rekha stood and greeted SRK who acknowledged it with a bow. She moved on to Abhishek Bachchan next. The bonhomie was obvious as she kissed his cheek. She then warmly hugged the Bachchan bahu, Aishwarya. She was just about to disengage from Ash and greet the person sitting last on the row – Amitabh. There was a minute of suspense, as the media waited for a photo-op of a lifetime. But... Before Rekha could turn his way, Amitabh got up, and walked away.

I feel disgusted by Slumdog Millionaire: Amitabh Bachchan

Bollywood megastar Amitabh Bachchan has slammed Danny Boyle's Golden Globe award winning underdog drama “Slumdog Millionaire” for showing India in poor light.

“If 'Slumdog Millionaire' projects India as Third World dirty underbelly developing nation and causes pain and disgust among nationalists and patriots, let it be known that a murky underbelly exists and thrives even in the most developed nations, ” Amitabh said in a posting on his blog Wednesday from Paris, France.

“Its just that the 'Slumdog Millioanire' idea authored by an Indian and conceived and cinematically put together by a westerner, gets creative global recognition, ” he added.

The 66-year-old also talked about the changing trend in recognition of Indian cinema.

“The commercial escapist world of Indian cinema had vociferously battled for years, on the attention paid and the adulation given to the legendary Satyajit Ray... and not a word of appreciation for the entertaining mass-oriented box office blockbusters that were being churned out from Mumbai.

“Ray portrayed reality. While, the other - escapism, fantasy and incredulous posturing. Unimpressive for Cannes and Berlin and Venice (film festivals), ” he explained.

He further wrote: “But look how rapidly all that is changing. Dedicated TV channels running Hindi cinema on prime timings. Premieres at Leicester Square (referring to 'Chandni Chowk To China'), the home of all Hollywood royalty, thronged by hundreds on the street in cold biting weather.”

Big B finally shoots for Aladdin

Sujoy Ghosh’s Aladdin was supposed to release last month, but was postponed because Amitabh Bachchan, who plays Genie, could not find the time to shoot a few of his scenes. Now, after a three-month delay, the production house has announced that shooting will begin today.

“Yes, Mr. Bachchan has finally given us time. We were worried about the Bachchan dates. Because of his health and his other commitments, the film was pushed back.”

Amitabh was admitted to hospital on his birthday (11th October) and after a month’s rest, he started shooting first for Teen Patti.

Director Sujoy Ghosh said, “I was not at all worried about the completion of the film. Amitji is a very professional actor and I knew he’d keep his promise. Last October, things didn’t work out because of his health problem. It’s really great to see a senior actor get back to shape so quickly.

“We wanted to release the film during the Christmas season. But now we are planning on releasing it during the summer vacation (April-May, 09).”

Big B has also confirmed the shoot. In his blog, he writes, “The shooting of Aladdin beckons tomorrow (2nd Jan, 09). A song and the last days of the film. Shiamak Davar and his crew. Disciplined and worthy.”

RGV ropes in Big B, Riteish, Gul for Rann

Ram Gopal Varma has roped in a huge ensemble cast for his up coming next, Rann. Apart from signing his favourite actor, Amitabh Bachchan to play a pivotal role, the maverick filmmaker has also got in Riteish Deshmukh, Sudeep (hero of Phoonk) Gul Panag and Paresh Rawal to play important parts.

Manisha Koirala too gets a new lease of life in Bollywood as Ramu has cast her too in his film. She is back to Ramu camp after almost six years gap since Company (2006).

"When News Channels, Political parties and Industrial czars are the principal movers and shakers in a film, there is obviously a tremendous scope for high drama.

This is not so much my conscious intention as the director of the film, but the very demand of the subject matter. Having said that, even the so-called high profile people at the end of the day are, 'people'.

And no matter how powerful they are, they are not without their share of insecurities, egos, jealousies, and dilemmas." states Ramu in his blog about Rann.

Explaining in details each and every cast member of his film, Ramu states - I really enjoyed the process of casting for the incredibly exciting and thrilling characters of Rann.

The cast of Rann -

Amitabh Bachchan as Harshvardhan Malik - The founder of the first ever private news channel in the country INDIA 24/7, the Harvard-educated Harshvardhan Malik is India's most respected media personality. He is a hardcore upholder of journalistic ethics. No wonder his Channel is battling for survival!

Riteish Deshmukh as Purab Shastri - Armed with a degree in journalism, Purab Shastri truly believes that the media should be the check point for the people of a country, and therefore, it should report news, instead of manufacturing news.

Purab's thinking sets him apart from most youngsters of this country. While everyone is chasing their individual dreams, Purab aggressively wants to work towards a better India. Needless to say, a clash between Purab and the powers-that-be looks inevitable. It is dangerous to be right when the government is wrong!

Sudeep as Jay Malik - A go-getter and highly aggressive and ambitious son of Harshvardhan Malik, Jay looks at his Dad's news channel purely as a business enterprise that must make profits to justify its existence. He hates that his competition is doing better than him.

Manisha Koirala Nalini Kashyap - She is the programming head of Harshvardhan Malik's news channel, INDIA 24/7. Having been in the industry for long enough, she has developed a practical view of how things operate here.

And this comes in direct conflict with what her boss Harshvardhan Malik, thinks. Juggling the cut-throat world outside with the idealistic universe of her boss, Nalini Kashyap has her job cut out.

Paresh Rawal as Mohan Pandey - It is every politician's dream to become the Prime Minister of his country. To that extent, the leader of the opposition Mohan Pandey is no different from his contemporaries. The only difference being - if the need arises, Pandey can and will kill to get the coveted chair.

Gul Panag as Nandita Sharma - The assistant of an ad filmmaker, Nandita Sharma someday hopes to bag an independent feature film. She is in a live-in relationship with her boyfriend Purab. Nandita is smart, educated, and intelligent.

She is also highly indifferent to what's happening in the country, and first thinks about herself and her man, before anything or anybody else. On both counts, she represents the youth of India.

Mohnish Behl as Amrish Kakkar - He was the first to have the VISION and the foresight to realize that even the business of delivering NEWS can be made ENTERTAINING.

Amrish therefore can be safely held singularly responsible for taking the television news industry to the dogs, or to the heights, depending on how you see it.

His channel is no less than a shady brothel, the content that is NEWS is no less than a cheap hooker, and Amrish Kakkar - the most powerful pimp around.

Rajat Kapoor as Naveen Shankalya - Apart from being the son-in-law of Harshvardhan Malik, is also one of the topmost industrialists of the country.

Despite this, he is the most insecure man on earth, and won't rest till he becomes the number one industrialist in the country. His best buddy Mohan Pandey becoming the Prime Minister of India will surely help his cause.

Raima Sen as Yasmin Hussain - An ex-model, and fiancée of Jay Malik, Yasmin watches TV, reads gossip columns, and for most part, takes everything that is dished out to her, AT FACE VALUE. She does not understand the intricacies of power games, and hidden motivations behind actions of people.

The resources at her disposal to know what is true and what is not, are limited. She is not innocent, and she is not clever either. Yasmin therefore epitomizes the 'common man'.

Rajpal Yadav as Anand Prakash Trivedi - A creative editor, Anand Prakash Trivedi has a knack for sensationalizing even the driest story and making it sound like the story of the decade with super catchy headlines. More than any filmmaker, he makes far better movies. Only, he calls them NEWS.

Well, looking at the starcast of RGV's Rann, one can say that this in itself is a 'breaking news'.

Big B and RGV join hands again

After the disastrous performance of “Ramgopal Varma Ki Aag” and “Sarkar Raaj”, Amitabh Bachchan had decided to maintain a distance from Ram Gopal Varma.

He was reportedly upset with the performance of the movies at the box office and did not want to be a part of RGV’s Factory.

But apparently things have changed and once again both of them have decided to join hands for a project.

Confirming the news Big B said Ramu has always entrusted him with challenging roles and this time too it will be a very challenging one. He also said he enjoyed working with RGV.

However, Bachchan refused to divulge any details about Ramu’s project. So we have to wait till things are finalised.
