Akshay, Kareena and Stallone pack a punch!

If 2008 was the year of Ghajini, then Kambakkht Ishq — which opens today in 2,030 screens worldwide, is already being declared the biggest triumph of 2009 and promises to be Akshay Kumar’s and Kareena Kapoor’s day in the sun!

Sajid Nadiadwala’s romantic comedy for Eros International with stunts provided by Akshay, glam and sex appeal by Kareena and Hollywood actress Denise Richards, and action by the legendary actor Sylvester Stallone himself, is booked solid this weekend.

The film is Akshay’s biggest opening ever, bigger than Welcome and Singh Is Kinng and almost surpassing Ghajini’s initial opening. Certainly, the hysteria the film has generated before its release is bigger than that created by Ghajini. With Kambakkht Ishq, Akshay — who plays a swashbuckling stunt man for Hollywood and body double for Stallone, consolidates his position as Bollywood’s most bankable star. And Kareena, whose role as a surgeon and supermodel is done with panache, carries the film on her sexy shoulders and delivers a knockout performance to rival Jab We Met while proving she is Bollywood’s No. 1 actress.

At a power-packed special trial held on Wednesday night, the film industry sat rolling in the aisles as the funny antics unfolded on screen. Katrina Kaif, who has delivered hits with Akshay herself, was heard raving about how entertaining the film is. And Saif Ali Khan, who also saw the film, was in splits and said girlfriend Kareena looked like an international icon. His kids Sara and Ibrahim loved the film, too. As did Akshay’s son Aarav, who moved between mother Tina and grandma Dimple Kapadia during the trial, and then began calling his father Superman after looking at the stunts Akshay pulls off on screen.

Trade analyst Vikas Mohan believes the film will cross the Rs 100-crore mark. While Taran Adarsh, who thought Akshay had surpassed himself and delivered one of his best performances till date, said one couldn’t ask for more in Kambakkht Ishq. Bollywood’s other big trade analyst Amod Mehra added, “Just by looking at the promos, one can tell that it’s a right mix of rom-com that people would like to see, especially since nowadays films lack all this. It looks like a fun film and it’s opening has been gigantic.”

But, perhaps, the nicest thing about the film has been said by a man of few words and more action. Stallone, who regretted he could not be in Mumbai for the release of the film, said of Kambakkht Ishq, “It deals with a subject that I like which is about heart, it’s about giving, it’s about spirituality, it’s about physical manifestation of love... coz in the end, that’s really all that counts. There have been many action films where people are just beating each other up. But when it’s really about something soulful, I’m interested, and that’s what this film is about. It’s nice to be invited into your world.”

Akshay does live stunt for 'Kambakkht...' promotion

Popular for his daredevil stunts, Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar jumped off a 60-foot high elevated structure in the capital Thursday evening to promote his new film "Kambakkht Ishq" releasing Friday.

Clad in a black body hugging full sleeved T-shirt, jeans, sports shoes and shades, the actor played his comic self with the fans and the media before jumping off on the stage.

He talked about his character Viraj Shergill, a Hollywood stuntman in the film, and the importance of women in the lives of men.

"I'm a typical male chauvinist (in the film)... do you even know who is a male chauvinist? He is one who believes that he is God's gift to women. But I must tell you that if men are from Mars, women are from heaven," said the actor while still standing suspended with wires from a crane at DLF place in Saket.

The 41-year-old then probed the media for questions from the height. "Hi media. Won't you like to ask me anything right now. I've done almost 120 films and I haven't seen such a pc (press conference). Go on, ask what you want. I won't jump before you do."

The actor who was last seen in duds "Chandni Chowk To China" and "8x10 Tasveer" also warned his fans not to repeat the stunts shown in films.

"Stunts are amazing but please don't do them... it's way too dangerous. Three months ago, my cousin was trying one of my glass breaking stunts from the film and he ended up with a lot of stitches. Even we (actors) have to undergo a lot of rehearsals before doing them," said the actor before taking the leap.

Produced by Sajid Nadiadwala, "Kambakkht Ishq" has been directed by debutant Sabbir Khan.

It also stars Kareena Kapoor and has much publicised cameos by Hollywood stars like Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards.

Joining Akshay after the stunt, Kareena couldn't stop raving about her co-star of six films including "Kambakkht...".

"The star of this film is none other than Akshay Kumar. He has done a fabulous job... it is a must watch out for," she said.

B.O. update: 'Kambakkht Ishq' takes a hurricane-like start

The much-awaited biggie KAMBAKKHT ISHQ started with a bang last night. The film grossed 100% collections in paid previews on Thursday night. In Mumbai alone, the paid previews were held at 62 screens and the film garnered 100% collections. On Friday morning, the early morning shows, i.e. 9.30 am / 10 am shows opened to 90% - 95% occupancy. Places like Rohtak [East Punjab circuit] collected Rs. 55,000 nett against Rs. 60,000 house full capacity. Amritsar will be collecting Rs. 1 lac, which is over-capacity by 200/250 audience. Lucknow was 90% - 95% in morning shows. The audience report is very positive.

Both Katrina, Kareena have sexy bodies, says Akshay

Action king can’t decide who’s better

Akshay Kumar has worked with both Kareena Kapoor and Katrina Kaif in several films, but can't decide who is better. The action king says both are "wonderful actresses" and have "sexy bodies".

"Both Kareena and Katrina are really good but who is the better among them depends on their roles in the films. Otherwise, both of them have sexy bodies and are absolutely wonderful actresses," said Akshay when asked to choose his favourite of the two.

Akshay has done four films with Katrina including "Namastey London" and "Singh Is Kinng", while he has worked with Kareena in five that include hits "Ajnabee" and "Aitraaz". The two are set to scorch the screen once again in their upcoming action-cum-romantic drama "Kambakkht Ishq", which releases on Friday.

"In 'Kambakkht Ishq', Kareena has performed very well. Her character required to answer back at me and be strong and she has portrayed it in a powerful, yet lovable way. On the other hand, even Katrina was really good in 'Namastey London'. So it's not really about my choice... it all depends on their roles," the actor told IANS over phone from Puerto Rico, where he is on a holiday.

Akshay, who has spent more than 18 years in the Hindi film industry, says acting with a new league of actresses is a learning experience.

"As a senior actor, I don't always have to give out tips to the younger ones. In fact, I feel I can learn a lot from the younger generation because they have new ways of acting and a different approach to work.

"I cannot particularly point out what I have learnt from them (Kareena and Katrina) yet, but yes, working with them was a learning experience," said the actor, who has also teamed up with Priyanka Chopra, Deepika Padukone and Ayesha Takia.

Akshay plays a Hollywood stuntman in "Kambakkht Ishq", which also boasts of big Hollywood names like Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Brandon Routh - working with whom has been a "dream come true" for the actor.

In the film, Akshay has done what he is best at - action and daredevilry - something that had taken a backseat in his career for a while.

"I decided to stop doing stunts till Aarav (son) turns at least six. Now I'm back at it again. In 'Blue', which is an action thriller, I have done some death-defying stunts like the one where I had to swim 150 feet underwater with 30-40 sharks. But I will talk about it sometime later," he said.

At the moment, the 41-year-old actor is pinning hopes on Sajid Nadiadwala's "Kambakkht Ishq" to bail him out after his much-publicised films "Chandni Chowk To China" and "8X10 Tasveer" fizzled out at the box office.

"I'm expecting great response for this film. Though I had worked very hard in 'Chandni Chowk...' , the response didn't turn out to be as expected. Some people and critics didn't like it and '8X10 Tasveer' was more like an art film, which has a niche market in India. 'Kambakkht Ishq' is a complete entertainer and I hope the audience appreciates it," he said.

Apart from "Kambakkht Ishq", Akshay will also be seen in "Blue", "De Dana Dan" and "Action Replay".

Akshay's flops don't affect me

Two of Bollywood superstar Akshay Kumar's big budget films may have bombed this year, but it doesn't worry director Sabbir Khan who has cast him in his ready-to-release mega-budget directorial debut movie "Kambakkht Ishq". "Failures of Akshay's movies don't affect me at all because a movie is a movie...and as a director, you just want to know whether the audiences want to see it or not, " Khan told in an interview. "Everybody goes through ups and downs. An actor's last success doesn't mean anything for a director...That way we wouldn't have had any more movies of Amitabh Bachchan or Shah Rukh Khan or Tom Cruise, " he added. Both of Akshay's much-hyped releases this year -- "Chandni Chowk To China" and "8X10 Tasveer" -- bombed at the box-office. "I think whosoever's worked with Akshay will want to repeat him. He becomes an instant favourite because of the person he is. He is a genuine human being and a brilliant actor, " said Khan who earlier worked as an assistant director in an Akshay starrer, the 2004 comedy "Mujhse Shaadi Karogi". The first time director, who has scripted "Kambakkht Ishq", was in the capital to promote the film. Shot at Universal Studios in Hollywood as well as Italy, Venice and Mumbai, the romantic comedy has much publicised cameos from Hollywood stars like Sylvester Stallone, Brandon Routh and Denise Richards. Releasing July 3, the film has been produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. "Both the producer and I dreamt big and we sort of took a simple and interesting story and made it larger than life, " said Khan, who is the son of 1960s lyricist Noor Dewasi. When asked if he was apprehensive about filming Hollywood big shots, Khan said: "I'm a director and I can't let anything overwhelm me. I'm the captain of the ship and it's my job to lead a crew of 300 people every day. So I can't be nervous filming them (Hollywood stars), though I was excited for sure when they agreed to be part of it. "I had no apprehensions because we were so well-prepared, but it was great shooting Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards. The Hollywood stars are the USP of the film. They have some very interesting cameos in the film." Starring Kareena Kapoor in the female lead, it also has Aftab Shivdasani and Amrita Arora in pivotal roles. The producer is aggressively promoting the film, but Khan has been sidelined from the promotional activities. Asked about his subdued presence, he said: "It's very natural that my name is subdued. It's only my first film as a director and nobody knows me. Sajid, Akshay and Kareena are very famous people and if the film is known by them, it's absolutely great to have better known people to be associated with the film." Khan is slated to direct another project with Nadiadwala early next year.

In this short interview, Akki talks about the extrovert Simrita (Kareena's screen name), his long lost co-star Aftab Shivdasani, fun being an incompatible couple, his lean figure, his sometimes violent fans and why he would also do films like 8 X 10 Tasveer besides his comic capers. What happens when you meet an extrovert like Simrita? (After nearly two minutes of silence) I'd actually be offended. I'd not like to speak to that person and just walk off. I'd never try to be near her at all. Kambakkht Ishq looks like a mad comic capers you've done in the past like Deewane Huye Paagal and Awara Paagal Deewana. Not at all. First of all, it's not a comic caper. It's a romantic comedy. Yes, it has many comic moments but it's also got love infused in it. Too much of romance is there in the film. It's all about one-upmanship between the two sexes and who is dominant. It's a superiority complex. The kind of dialogues we have with each other is the kind of dialogues you will relate to. Somewhere or the other it'll remind you of the similar type of conversation you've had with a woman in your life. There aren't many films of such nature which are being made in Hindi cinema. I believe that Men are from Mars and Women are from Heaven. It looks like Kambakkht Ishq is a complete overseas package in the way it's shot and with Hollywood action heroes adoring the Bollywood space. I don't know about the overseas package. It sounds very shallow that a film is only made for the overseas population. Yes, it's got Hollywood actors in it and may appeal to the public in the West but it's an Indian film for the world to see. It's a film which I've enjoyed doing because of the script. I'm playing a Hollywood stuntman and all the Hollywood actors are a part of my life in the film. That's the reason they are there in the film and not to package it as an international release. You've worked with Aftab Shivdasani in Awara Pagal Deewana. How is Affy now after you've last seen him a good, four to five years ago? Affy can play these kinds of roles very easily like he played in Awara Pagal Deewana. He fits the 'bechara', 'pyaar ka maara' type of roles very well. You feel sorry for his character in the film. He is very true to his character in whichever film he performs. I loved him in Kasoor where he played an obsessed lover along side Lisa Ray. He was superb in the film. What's the fun in being an incompatible couple? The fun is what women think about men and what men think about women. We just say it openly about it. We curse each other which is great. We pull our leg, disagree with every word we say and that's fun. Lean and fit is your fitness statement. You're fit at 40 unlike others who're still pumping iron to stay in shape. I don't think that's right. I believe in having an athletic body more than a bulkier body. I am too natural when it comes to fitness. I do not pick up weights. Obviously, a body like me does help in terms of an action film and stunts. Most of my stunts are performed by me because of this athletic body. If I had bulging biceps, I could only bash somebody up. Why is there so much expectation surrounding your release always? Because my fans expect a lot of fun and entertainment from Akshay Kumar. They've seen me in my last five years doing mad comedy . That's the reason why. They come in search of masala, they come in search of laughter, they come in search of emotions here and there and they've got everything to take back home with them after watching my comic films. And when they didn't get 8 X 10 Tasveer, they got disappointed. No masti, fun, laughter. I need to do different films to get into a different mode. Films like 8 X 10 Tasveer satisfy me as an actor. I'm very proud of Nagesh. What about your fans? They just don't love you. I'm sure they've got a bit violent sometimes? Oh yes. Fans in the overseas can get violent sometimes, especially women fans. They pounce on you with their long nails scratching you behind your neck. It's happened to me quite a few times now when I've visited the US or the UK. Of course, I don't argue with Twinkle when I go back home with such scratch marks made by my female fans. I also remember the time when my hands were bleeding when I shook hands with a female fan. She had a blade in between her fingers which you can't see. Such are some fans. Some love to hate me I guess. But realistically, I believe that that's the way some of the fans show love to you. Which is your favourite Sylvester Stallone film you've seen? I like his last Rocky film. He was absolutely fantastic in it. I didn't ask him which film he had seen of mine because I was too ashamed of asking that question as I suspected the answer to be 'No'. Did you guys hang around after the shoot was over? Denise, you, Kareena, Sylvester, Brandon? No, we didn't hang around together. In Hollywood, you just work. But yes, we did chat a lot. Denise was more interested in knowing about India. I also mentioned to her that India is a Bollywood crazy country but I told her that people will go to the theaters to watch Kambakkht Ishq more than the English films she has been a part of.

Saif, Akshay play double roles in forthcoming films

What is common between Akshay Kumar and Saif Ali Khan? The two are playing double roles, their characters belong to two different time zones in their forthcoming films, and the two have to spend hours preparing for their double makeover.

For Vipul Shah's "Action Replay", Akshay spends at least an hour every morning getting into a 1970s' sporty look without the help of prosthetics.

"It's the toughest role I've played. The preparation takes a lot of time. I've Paul Pattison - who did Mel Gibson's look in 'Braveheart' - doing my look. But the effort is worth it. When I look in the mirror after Paul is done, I can't recognise myself," Akshay told IANS.

If Akshay promises to look unrecognisable in "Action Replay", Saif's look in his production venture "Love Aaj Kal" (pictured above) shocked his girlfriend Kareena Kapoor.

"She couldn't recognise me at first when she saw me as a Sardarji," said Saif.

Imtiaz Ali is wielding the megaphone for Saif's production debut.

So far we've known only the fact that Saif gets into a Sardarji's get-up in the course of the narration in "Love Aaj Kal". But it's not known that the Sikh character is separate from the protagonist.

"The Sardar comes in a story within the story. Yes, I've a double role. The two characters belong to two different time zones," said Saif.

"I grew the beard fully. It had to be faked only for one day's patchwork. I give the full credit for the Sardar's look to Dolly Ahluwalia. She had earlier done a great job dressing me up as Langda Tyagi in 'Omkara'. She styled my Sardar's look in 'Love Aaj Kal," he added.

Saif hasn't done too many disguises.

"But after 'Omkara' I transform physically in 'Love Aaj Kal'. Otherwise I'm not too much into physical makeovers."

Despite flops Akki is the busiest actor in Bollywood

Though Akshay Kumar has denied that he is in the race to be the number one hero he is said to be the busiest actor in Bollywood. Like every year this year too seems a busy year ahead for the Khiladi Kumar. He will be busy working and traveling non stop. He has just finished shooting for the second season of his fear factor series Khatron Ke Khiladi recently in South Africa. The entire shoot has been hush-hush as they want to surprise the audiences. In addition, he has also competed the shooting for Ratan Jain’s De Dana Dhan being directed by Priyadarshan. He is currently shooting for Vipul Shah’s Fast Forward with Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in Karjat. Aamir, Akshay, Hrithik nominated for action awards

Bollywood stars Aamir Khan, Akshay Kumar and Hrithik Roshan are in the race to bag the best actor award at the AXN Action Awards.

While Aamir has been nominated for "Ghajini", Akshay is in contention for "Tashan" and Hrithik for "Jodhaa Akbar".

"'Ghajini' is a film that required a lot of aggression that exposes the basic crude emotion of human loss. I'm honoured to be nominated in the best action actor category, as the action in the film is more complex and thought provoking, showcasing anger, vengeance and physical violence," said Aamir in a statement.

In the best actor in a negative role category, the competition is between Imran Khan for "Kidnap", Saif Ali Khan for "Race" and Kay Kay Menon for "Drona".

"'Race' is a thoroughbred action film, complete with flamboyance and panache. I enjoyed performing the stunts and watching the movie evolve into a suave piece of cinema. I am thrilled to be nominated for my role," he said.

The results will depend on public voting which is now open. Fans can cast their votes by logging on to www.axnactionawards.com or by texting (from India) to 52525.

The winners will be announced on the channel next month.

Akshay & John to play pole dancers

All you women out there get ready to start panting! Two of Bollywood’s hottest hunks, Akshay Kumar and John Abraham will play pole dancers in a strip club in David Dhawan’s son Rohit’s directorial debut.

The film is being produced by Hariom Productions, which is owned by Akshay Kumar. This isn’t the first time that Akshay and John will be seen together in a film. Earlier too the two hunks starred together in Priyadarshan’s 2005 film, Garam Masala. But things promise to get far hotter in the forthcoming film. A source said, “Earlier, Akshay was supposed to be part of Rohit’s film, Come On Pappu. However, the film did not work out. Meanwhile, there were talks of a romantic comedy, which Akshay had offered to star in as well as produce. Rohit’s untitled film is about Akshay and John, who lose their jobs because of the recession. As they are unable to find a decent job, they become pole dancers at the same strip club where they try to outdo each other. John and Akshay will undergo training for pole dancing in LA before the shoot begins. The film will be shot in some of the most exotic locales.”

It will certainly be a treat to watch two of the hottest actors wearing almost nothing but their gorgeous smiles.

Busy boy Akshay Kumar

He returned from Singapore earlier this week but instead of enjoying the summer vacations with his family, Akshay has started work on Vipul Shah’s Action Replay in Karjat.

Says a source close to Akshay, “One would expect Akshay to take a break on his return from Singapore where he was shooting De Dhana Dhan but the dedicated, workaholic actor has started shooting for Vipul Shah’s Action Replay already, even as Aishwarya Rai is at the Cannes Film Festival. He is staying at Karjat because traveling to and fro all the time is inconvenient. The shooting will continue till mid-June. Ash will join them when she returns from Cannes. In June, he will be attending the IIFAs with his family as well. He will also finish his small commitments such as promo songs of De Dhana Dhan during that month.”

There was confusion regarding his arrest for the alleged ‘obscene’ act at the Lakme Fashion Week where his wife Twinkle unbuttoned his jeans at the Levi’s show. Some reports said that he was arrested, while some said he was not arrested even though he went to the police station. Our source clarifies, “Like any law abiding citizen, Akshay went to the police station and completed some formalities because that is what one has to do when a complaint is filed against them. Akshay didn’t do anything wrong so he didn’t pay a fine and was not arrested.”

Blue, Kambakkht Ishq and De Dhana Dhan are Akshay Kumar’s confirmed releases this year.

Akshay - Katrina stranded in a hotel

Akshay Kumar and Katrina ended up in an unusual spot literally. Revealed a unit source, "While shooting for Ratan Jain's De Dana Dhan, the lead pair of the film Akshay and Katrina were to be shifted to luxurious seven star hotel. The reason being Akshay wanted a hotel which showed the IPL matches. Now Ratan Jain the big hearted producer that he is, decided to get his entire unit there and not make them feel left out." He further added, "Now it so happened that while the rest of the cast and crew showed promptness in shifting from their earlier hotel to the new seven star one, Akshay and Katrina somehow ended up reaching a late due to prior commitments at the new hotel. But that proved to be their undoing as by the time they had arrived all the luxurious suites had been alloted to the rest cast and crew. Now these other members were not willing to let go off their luxurious suites for Akshay and Katrina. This put the poor producer in a fix. But finally somehow adjustments were made and the embarassing situation was brought to an end."
