Deepika going global

Deepika Padukone, who has an admirer in Hollywood-filmmaker Rob Cohen, feels she isn’t the only Bollywood actor to have won the west over.

Deepika feels, “The West is now more aware of Bollywood beauty and talent, and it isn’t my victory alone. Most of the young Bollywood actors — Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Sonam — have been noticed in Hollywood in some way or the other.’’ She graciously concedes that it is “the media that has made this possible.’’

She adds, “Talent was always there in our country, but with the media having such a wide reach today, we can reach across the globe more easily.’’

Film faternity gives Shiney Ahuja a clean chit

Bollywood is shell-shocked by the Shiney Ahuja maid episode. There is widespread disbelief that the actor could have shamed the industry in such a manner. They wonder how the nice guy Shiney could have resorted to such a heinous act. His co-stars, directors and producers react...

Shilpa Shetty: It's shocking! I can't believe it. We don't know for sure what transpired between Shiney and the girl and we really can't say what the truth us. But if it really happened it's sad.

Sudhir Mishra: As I was shooting, I woke up late on Sunday to confusing stories about Shiney. What can I say? The Shiney that I know and the Shiney that I hear about now are two different entities. Though he has been a little upset with me for six months because I was working with other actors, we're very close. Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi was not just the film that launched him but it was also a turning point in my career. It bonded us for a lifetime. There were so many women on the sets and they never had any complaints about Shiney's behaviour. In fact, Shiney did a film with my assistant Ruchi Narain called Kal. He was always a thorough gentleman. I am sure there's some misunderstanding here.

Mahesh Bhatt: The news has shocked and shamed us. The Shiney who worked with us in Gangster and Woh Lamhe is not the demon that surfaced in the media on Sunday night. If what is alleged is proved in the courts we must condemn the dastardly deed with all our might. Our outrage cannot be selective.

Pritish Nandy: The matter is under investigation. I strongly believe in justice taking its own course. However I feel too many people are jumping to too many conclusions. Let's not judge Shiney until the investigations are concluded.

Anurag Basu: I'm in a state of shocked disbelief. This has got to be conspiracy to malign him. Shiney has done two of his best films with me. We've bonded over a long period of time. Never has there been even a hint of bad behaviour from him. I wouldn't have tolerated it. I remember once long ago a spotboy had behaved badly with a lady on my sets, I had fired him immediately. One has to be very careful about these things. It's not fair to try Shiney on television. Let the law decide. I'll believe it only if Shiney himself tells me. He has worked with some of the most beautiful heroines. No one has ever had any grievance against him. I feel this is a trap to malign him.

Chitrangada Singh: I worked with him in two films. It's very shocking and unfortunate. Though I didn't know him personally, I felt he was a nice guy on the sets. He kept a bit aloof. Quiet and ambitious. He got along with people just fine. I hope the investigations are fair. And that someone doesn't get punished for being a celebrity. He seems to have said it was consensual sex. I think it takes courage to own up. I hope he stays strong though this. People do make mistakes. One has to pay for wrongs done. But the punishment should be fair. And if there's been a rape, justice has to be done to the girl."

Mukesh Bhatt: I'm appalled by the way the electronic media has already labelled Shiney a rapist. You can't do this to a man who has a family, career and a bright future. Punish him by all means, if he's guilty. But let the law decide that. How do we know what really happened? Anyone can say anything about someone in the light. Suppose they had consensual sex? Shiney is a successful man. This behaviour seems so out of character and so absurd.

Kunal Kohli: I worked briefly with Shiney in Fanaa. This is indeed very sad. Rape is the worst crime a man can commit against a woman. If he's guilty then it's really very shocking and shameful. Any rapist should be dealt with in the severest way.

Shiney faces more trouble as rape is confirmed

Bollywood actor Shiney Ahuja, in police custody facing the charge of raping his teenaged housemaid, is in serious trouble as medical tests confirmed rape, while his lawyer on Tuesday (June 16, 2009) said any further action for his defence can come only after the charge sheet is filed.

"The findings of the medical report confirm the statements in the victim's first information report (FIR)," Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone VI) Niket Kaushik told IANS on Tuesday.

In another disclosure, the official said that a physical examination of the victim indicated she could be aged between 17-18 years, making her a minor as per Indian laws.

"In order to determine her correct age, we are now planning to send her for appropriate dental and bone examination. So I cannot comment anything on this aspect immediately," Kaushik said.

The actor's lawyer Shrikant Shivede told IANS: "He's in the police station for interrogation as of now. No charge sheet has been filed yet. So we'll think of something when the charge sheet is filed."

On Sunday, the maid lodged a complaint against Shiney, accusing him of raping her, threatening to kill and illegally confining her, leading to the actor's arrest.

The actor was produced before a magistrate in suburban Andheri court on Monday afternoon under tight security and was on Monday remanded to police custody till June 18.

Both Shiney and the victim have undergone medical tests in a government hospital.

The victim had been working with him for the past one year. She has accused him of repeatedly raping her.

The victim used to commute by local train from Vasai suburb in neighbouring Thane district to Shiney's home daily for doing cooking and other chores along with two other part-time servants.

Police say that after interrogation, Shiney said he had "a physical relationship" with the victim. He has reportedly said he could have committed the crime in a drunken state.

He is said to be living separately from his wife Anupama, who has rushed from the US to Mumbai. The couple has a daughter.

"I love my husband...He is a wonderful father, a great partner and most importantly, he is an innocent man. I stand by him with all my soul, with all my heart, with all my love," Anupama told a TV channel.

She also slammed the reports that the actor had "confessed" to raping his maid. "It is a lie...utter rubbish," she said.

Shiney's parents, who stay in Noida near New Delhi, too have flown to Mumbai.

Asked how they were coping with news, lawyer Shivede said: "Of course, they are shocked. They are not happy."

Shiney is an alumnus of the Army Public School and Hansraj College, New Delhi.

He started his acting career in 2003 with the critically acclaimed "Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi".

Later, he acted in movies like "Gangster", "Karam", "Woh Lamhe", "Fanaa", "Hijack", "Life in a Metro" and the box-office hit "Bhool Bhulaiyya".

He has bagged over half a dozen acting awards in the past six years for his roles.

Priyanka wants nothing but the best

Priyanka Chopra believes in giving her best to whatever she does. Recently, for an ad she was supposed to use masquerade masks but she rejected all the masks that were brought from Venice and New York.

Thus, it was decided that a mask should be especially made for her but that required Priyanka to sit with plaster on her face for three hours so as to get the measurements correct.

Due to time constraint it could not be done. However, Priyanka called her designer Gaviin Miguel and asked him to design a few masks for her.

Gaviin worked overnight and came up with 4 designs out of which Priyanka approved of one. That finally settled the matter, much to the relief of the ad makers.

What’s your problem, Ashu

Priyanka Chopra is still recovering from the shock and anger of being publically humiliated by Ashutosh Gowariker, director of her next film “What’s Your Rashee?”, at the IIFA Awards on June 13, 2009.

After Priyanka collected her award as the Best Actress for “Fashion”, it was Ashu’s turn to go on stage to receive his Best Director award for “Jodhaa Akbar”.

The first thing that he uttered after taking the mike was, “Priyanka, I love you, but I don't know how you got the award for Best Actress when Aishwarya was also nominated in the same category for ‘Jodhaa Akbar’.”

As if that wasn’t bad enough, he further added, “Maybe it is because you are very hard-working and she is a natural.”

But when he realised that he was goofing up, he put the blame on Jaya Bachchan, who was standing next to him, and said, “Jayaji was just asking me the same thing."

Priyanka, understandably, was furious, but maintained a calm and dignified front.

However, she skipped the after-party in Abhishek and Aishwarya’s suite and reportedly said, “I don't want to go there and see his face.”

We wonder what made Ashu say what he did? Was he trying to impress the Bachchans on their home ground, IIFA awards? Considering Priyanka has won the Best Actress award for “Fashion” at every award show this year, how come Ashu suddenly wake up to realise Ash was more deserving?

By the way, Priyanka was not the only one whom he upset at IIFA awards. Apparently, he even had a confrontation with the hosts of the evening – actors Boman Irani and Riteish Deshmukh.

He is said to have blasted them for making fun of his film.

According to sources from IIFA, Riteish and Boman presented a skit spoofing all the movies nominated in the Best Film category, which included “Race”, “Dostana”, “Rock On”, “Ghajini”, “Jodhaa Akbar” and “A Wednesday”.

For the “Jodhaa Akbar” act, Boman played Akbar while a starlet played Jodhaa. Riteish walked in dressed as Amitabh Bachchan in “Shahenshah”. When Boman asked Riteish who he was, the latter replied, “Rishte mein hum tumhare baap lagte hai, lekin naam hai Shahenshah,” to which Boman said, “Tum Shahenshah toh main kaun hoon?”

It was an inoffensive statement, but it angered Ashu to no limit. He walked out from the audience and went straight to the green room. There he lectured Riteish and Boman about poking fun at others. He also asked Riteish and Boman why SRK and Bachchans were not made fun of (Though Abhishek’s movie “Drona” had been spoofed).

Ashu even threatened the organisers that if these things do not stop, he will take the stage and ask the audience, if these kind of jokes should be allowed at award functions.

The organisers apparently had to literally plead with him not to take such a step because it would spoil India’s image internationally as IIFA has a global reach.

Although he did not take the stage, Ashu did not spare Riteish and Boman. He was reportedly overheard telling people just because Riteish is a minister’s son, he thinks he can get away with anything.

Not one to lie low, Riteish too fired at Ashu and told him to take jokes sportingly.

The duo even questioned why Ashu never objected when Shah Rukh Khan poked fun at everyone whenever he hosted an award show.

Since this is the second time Ashu’s lost his temper at an awards night, we wonder if organisers will invite him to such functions in future.

Anil Kapoor pokes fun at Ash

Gossip continues to trickle in, long after the green carpet at IIFA Awards 2009 has been rolled up.

Off late, things have not been very pleasant between the Bachchans and Anil Kapoor’s family.

Earlier, Anil was not too happy when Amitabh Bachcan slammed his “Slumdog Millionaire” on his blog. Then daughter Sonam was reportedly edged out of her Cannes red carpet appearance by Aishwarya, which left Sonam heartbroken.
At the IIFA Awards, Anil Kapoor was called on the stage to announce the winner of the Best Female Actor of the Decade. He opened the envelope and declared the winner, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, but later called her as fantastic, fabulous, mind blowing, mind blasting... chaiwali.

Without showing any grudge on her face Ash instantly replied, “Fantastic, fabulous, mind blowing, mind blasting... chaiwala.”

The audience had a forced laughter on their face, but nonetheless, many felt that Anil Kapoor should not have addressed a lady the way he did.

Meanwhile, Sonam was recently heard calling Ash “aunty”. When quizzed about the same, she said Aishwarya is quite senior to her and has also been her dad’s co-star so obviously she would call her dad’s co-star aunty.

Sonam needs to answer one more question on this: Will she call Abhishek uncle because he is Ash aunty’s husband, even though he was her co-star in “Dilli 6”?
