'I have learnt to enjoy controversies'

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma's discovery Nisha aka Priyanka Kothari says she has learnt to enjoy the controversies that surround her because they are an intrinsic part of an actor's career.

"I don't feel bad when my name figures in controversies. I didn't do anything consciously to be a part of those controversies, but controversies surround me. Now, I enjoy controversies and look at their positive side, " Nisha told.

However, she doesn't like it when she is romantically linked with her mentor Varma.

"Don't ascribe things that do not relate to me. Varmaji was only a director to me and I remained an actress of his films, " Nisha said when asked about her present equations with the filmmaker.

Nisha debuted with a cameo in Varma's "Sarkar" followed by a full-fledged role in his crime thriller "James". She also featured as Basanti in "Ram Gopal Verma Ki Aag", a remake of the 1975 hit "Sholay".

She was also in the news for her skin show on screen, but the actress doesn't regret it.

When her career didn't take off in Bollywood, Nisha reverted to her original name Priyanka and moved down south. But her first Telugu film "Okka Magaadu", in which she was paired with Balakrishna, bombed.

But the actress, still better known as Nisha, is happy because despite a bad start she is getting offers. She is working in a Telugu film and also signed a Kannada film "Raaj, the Showman" in which she has teamed up with Kannada star Puneet Raj Kumar.

The actress has replaced glamorous actress Malavika in a bilingual film that will be made simultaneously in Tamil and Telugu.

Nisha is one more addition to the list of the not so successful Bollywood heroines who are making a splash in the South Indian film industry.

Currently, the actress is shooting for her debut Kannada film in Madikeri, 250 km from here.

Nisha may well take up some more offers down south, but reiterates that she would take up Kannada offers only after she completes her work in "Raaj, the Showman".

"I have worked in two schedules of the film so far in Bangalore and Mysore. We have now moved to Madikeri to shoot some songs. I am really enjoying the work here. Director Prem focuses more on details. And with a big star like Puneet Raj Kumar supporting me with the dialogues, I am really smiling all the time, " said Nisha.

Asked about her decision to revert to her original name, she said: "My father suggested that I change by name. I decided to have my original name. After the name change, I am seeing a big turnaround in my career, " she said.

This was at the time when Aamir's directorial debut, Taare Zameen Par was about to be released. Much was later written in the media about each other's comments to each other.

But then all mouths got shut when Amitabh Bachchan made an appearance at Aamir's production Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na premiere at PVR Multiplex in Goregaon, Mumbai.

He not only congratulated Aamir's nephew Imran Khan who debuted with the film but also made appearance on news channels when the Jaane Tu team was being questioned by the nation.

He spoke on TV how good the film was and also praised Imran's acting, Aamir's marketing skills. Then there was a buzz in the media about Aamir directing Big B in his directorial next which was meant to be a sci-fi thriller. But it remained just a rumour as Aamir denied that.

Now today at the press conference of Tata Sky which Aamir is a brand ambassador of, Aamir expressed his concern for the ageing superstar. Aamir told us, "I am in regular touch with Abhishek over Amitji's health.

I am SMSsing him in regular intervals to get his health update. I am happy to find out now that he is in stable condition and that he shall be discharged anytime soon.

Kajol is still not out of her big star days

Post marriage and motherhood, Kajol mightn't be running the rat race but she's still not out of her big star days. The buzz is that she's being flashing her stardom wherever and whenever possible.

Maybe she thinks that her successful comeback with Fanaa the accidental hit 'U, Me Aur Hum', directed by her husband Ajay Devgan and the ambitious upcoming 'Toonpur Ka Superhero' makes her eligible for it!

She has categorically refused to reveal anything about her upcoming biggie Karan Johar's 'My Name Is Khan' or 'Khan' opposite SRK for long.

She has reportedly said, "There is nothing to talk about. I have not even started shooting. Once I start with it, we will talk about it."

Is it because her hubby is still not excited about her working with her one time prolific co-star Shah Rukh Khan? It could have something to do with the movie being stuck for long too.

Aamir Khan In fact there's a confusion regarding the title too. No one's yet sure whether it will be called 'My Name is Khan' or simply 'Khan'.

Now since the latest is that the movie's title is also clashing with a PNC project (tentatively titled 'Khan') and there are chances of some controversy, Kajol will have more reasons to keep mum!

Karan Johar orchestrate John's strip tease

There are many who feel John Abraham is super hot and that's quite understandable. He of course is and post 'Jism' and then 'Dhoom', many felt that he could act too.

But that was it. After that in his later movies like 'Madhoshi', 'Elaan', 'Karam', 'Kaal', 'Viruddh', 'Baabul' and 'Dhan Dhana dhan Goal' his weak acting skills came to the fore. Detractors in B-Town are plenty and one of them (at that time) Kareena Kapoor got a chance to call him 'expressionless' on national TV too (on Koffee with Karan)!

Audiences don't take much time to ruthlessly throw actors out of their minds and by now many have forgotten his fairly satisfactory performances in 'Zinda', 'Taxi Number 921' and 'Kabul Express'.

Even his movie 'Water' going to the Oscars and talks of Deepa Mehta signing him for her films and even one with 'The Mummy Star' Rachel Weisz hasn't really helped his case much.

Now Johnny boy is back to doing what he's good at- flaunting his hot bod!

The buzz is that in the movie he's banking on a lot- the Karan Johar 'Dostana', he stops only a wee bit short of dropping all his clothes.

The movie's promotional stills show the almost naked John pulling down the sole piece of garment, the yellow trunks without revealing anything than might anger the Censor board.

Now the word is that to develop the perfect sculpted body for the shoot, John worked out under fitness expert Mike Ryan who was called from LA to Miami (where 'Dostana' is shot). Sources say it was Karan Johar who is also the designer in the movie insisted on John doing this bare act. But natural, since he can't ask pudgy Abhishek to do the same!

John is happy with people's reaction towards his body. Girls are swooning and he's become a gay icon of sorts post the promos!

So enthused is John with the reactions that he says he is willing to go further and even pose nude if his role requires him to do so. He reasons that he's 'from a modeling background and that makes him extremely comfortable with his body, be it clothed or otherwise'.

All that's fine but since he won't have a Karan Johar to tell him to strip in every other movie post 'Dostana', it would be better for him to hone his acting skills as well!

Short, fat, balding men: Bollywood's unlikely heroes

They may lack the brooding good looks, chiseled jaw and honed physique of the typical leading Bollywood male, but short, fat, balding men are proving that they can still be a screen success. In an image-conscious industry, actors such as Himesh Reshammiya, Vinay Pathak and Paresh Rawal have found that how they look has not been a hindrance. All three readily admit they are no matinee idols, and may even be past their prime, yet are still a box office draw -- suggesting that personality, a sense of humour and raw talent are just as attractive as a pretty face.At five feet five inches (1.64 metres) tall, Reshammiya knows he is an unlikely screen presence. The 35-year-old only became an actor in 2007 after a career as a successful Bollywood music director. It is only people's love that has made me a hero. I am nowhere near other good-looking heroes of the industry," he said.

For his debut film, "Aap Kaa Surroor" (The Real Love Story), Reshammiya wore a baseball cap to cover his bald patch but audiences didn't seem to mind. The film more than held its own with two other movies released on the same day with more stellar casts.Middle-aged Pathak shot to fame as the irritating but endearing idiot Bharat Bhushan in the 2007 film Bheja Fry", a remake of the French comedy "Le Diner de Cons" (The Dinner Game).

He then followed up in the well-received comedy-drama "Mithya" in 2008, about a struggling actor who has the misfortune of being the double of an underworld don.All three men are modest about their success, arguing that character and acting ability has a more enduring appeal than the hero's looks -- which on its own is no guarantee of success. If a film is made with heart, honesty, happiness, passion and sincerity it will click. I am not in competition with any hero. My attempt is to make good cinema as much as I can. This is my main objective," said Pathak.

Rawal, who is nudging 60 and has played bad guys and comic roles, has had a succession of box office hits, including "Maalamaal Weekly" in 2006. He will play three different parts in his upcoming film "Oye Lucky, Oye Lucky".I don't consider myself as a star but only an actor. I came to this industry in the 1980s to become an actor and not a hero. I knew I would survive because I can act well," he said. The demands of acting have, however, led to some compromises for the unlikely leading men.

In his latest film "Karzzzz", which hits screens on October 17, Reshammiya has had a hair weave. He is also on a protein diet and cutting out the pizzas and ice-cream to get in shape for the five films he has lined up for next year.I cannot have flab on my stomach now if I want to be a hero," he admitted.Pathak also shed a few pounds for his new film "Dasvidaniya" (Goodbye). But both insist they are not succumbing to vanity.Reshammiya still touts himself as an average Joe of humble stock, albeit one who now has a personal make-up artist in tow.I have ordinary looks and I guess therefore the common man can relate to me when he sees me on the big screen," he said.

Pathak added: "I only put on or lose weight according to the characters that I play in my film. I never wanted to be a hero and only wanted to be a good actor," he explained. All my films are character driven and not hero driven."Rawal agreed, saying his goal is commercial success and critical acclaim.I don't want to get trapped into the stardom business," he said. "Stardom is for a limited time span compared to that of an actor whose acting lifeline is very long."
